AVERAGE PRACTICE SPEEDS:
Average practice speeds are calculated by taking the average speed of each driver in each practice and multiplying it by the number of laps ran. When you do this for each practice and add the totals together, and then divide by the total number of laps ran, you get an average of their practice speed, instead of just the one lap statistic you see when you look at practice sheets. The order that they are in is the overall average speeds rank and in parenthesis you will find their ranking (in terms of average speed) in Happy Hour.

1. Carl Edwards at 182.577 mph over 46 laps (ranked 1st in Happy Hour average speed)
2. Paul Menard at 181.586 mph over 58 laps (ranked 3rd in Happy Hour average speed)

Carl Edwards took a major hit in points last weekend at Phoenix when he was involved in THE BIG ONE. hopefully he can rebound this Sunday at Las Vegas

True, but he did get 10 extra points by going back on the track. When he originally went to garage he was at 7 points, but he managed to get out there and move up 10 spots to get 17 points. Making up those kind of points is big over the course of a season.

Good chance that a Roush ford will win today.

MooseWithFleas

45 minutes til coverage starts!

Some race storylines to keep an eye on, courtesy of Aaron Rosser.

Matt Kenseth looks to dominate: Winning the pole and topping both practice sessions is probably the easiest way to make yourself the favorite for a race. Matt Kenseth hasn't won since Fontana in February of 2009, but the driver of the No. 17 Ford Fusion has been top dog all weekend. An end to his winless drought could be on tap.

Ford: First On Race Day?: Should Kenseth falter, it seems likely that one of his Roush-Fenway Racing teammates or the Richard Petty Motorsports drivers will step up and take the Blue Oval to victory lane. Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle share the second row, while David Ragan has been fast aside from a spin on his qualifying lap. RPM's Marcos Ambrose and AJ Allmendinger both start in the top-10. Ambrose, the Australian V8 Supercar legend, rolls off from the outside of the front row while Allmendinger, a former open-wheel standout, starts seventh as the duo each seek their first Sprint Cup victory.

Jimmie Johnson's Drive For Five - again: Johnson completed his Drive for Five last November, winning his fifth-straight Sprint Cup title, but he embarks on another Drive for Five today, seeking his fifth Las Vegas victory. His four wins are a track record he will retain for at least another year regardless of what takes place Sunday, as Matt Kenseth and Jeff Burton are second with two wins each.

Can Tony Stewart finally break through in Vegas?: The two-time Sprint Cup champion makes his 20th start at Las Vegas today, between Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and IZOD IndyCar Series races, but he has never won, his biggest victory drought at any major venue. He came closest in the Cup race in 2000, where he was scored second to Jeff Burton when rain ended the event with just 148 laps completed.

Back-to-back for Jeff Gordon is nothing new: In tying Cale Yarborough on the all-time wins list last week at Phoenix, Jeff Gordon picked up his 83rd career triumph. 22 of those 83 wins have come as consecutive victories. The 2001 Las Vegas 400 champion could score his 23rd today.

Can the Busch Boys stay on top? It had been over two decades since two related drivers stood atop the Sprint Cup point standings when Kyle and Kurt Busch left Phoenix in first and second. The Las Vegas natives are seperated by three points and lead Tony Stewart and A.J. Allmendinger by 11. Kyle is a previous winner at Vegas, taking the 2009 race, while Kurt's best result is a 2005 runner-up finish to Jimmie Johnson.

Who'll take a gamble in Sin City?: Winning today's Kobalt Tools 400 will take a fast car, a good crew, and a driver who knows what he is doing, but it could also take a crew chief who's willing to take a gamble. Two tires? No tires? Stretching the fuel mileage? A roll of the dice could very well determine a team's fortunes as the checkered flag waves. Lucky seven? Or snake eyes?

MooseWithFleas

I hope so. 2 races in and I'm tired of the caution dominated races. Don't get me wrong, both races were very entertaining, but I'd like to see more extended racing in today's race.

I'm going with my man Mark Martin today, he usually does well at Vegas.

I don't get how the new points system promotes more aggressive driving and winning, like Darrell said. I don't think there's anything to indicate that. A bad finish does more bad than a top finish does good.

You look at a guy like AJ Allmendinger, who's 3rd in points, and he hasn't finished higher than 9th. Same with Paul Menard, and he's in 11th. Martin is 6th, and hasn't finished better than 10th.

Meanwhile, a guy like Jr, who hasn't been good, is still easily in the hunt while finishing 10th and 24th.

MooseWithFleas
03-06-2011, 04:05 PM
I don't get it either. If they put a 15 point bonus for winning, then I could see it. 3 points though is not worth driving too aggressive, wrecking and tumbling down the standings.

MooseWithFleas

Not with simple mistakes like that...

After the first bout of green flag stops, there are 30 cars on the lead lap. Kenseth has passed some of them and is still faster than the rest. He's in 38th and moving up.

It doesn't mean anything besides more sponsorship money and more of a payout from the race.

So, it pretty much means everything besides the points.

i implied that he'd get more sponsorship money and a bigger paycheck for winning the race. he's got a few more wins in him this year and if he's able to do so he'll prove that winning the Great American Race wasnt a fluke

He's a nice looking guy and seems pretty marketable. If he shows he can consistently race well, then no reason he shouldn't get a full time gig next year. If he does this week in and week out though, it's a different story.

Gordon. Kenseth will be fine. He'll get back on the lead lap soon enough.
Maybe not as soon as I thought. Just assumed we wouldn't get this many lapped cars this early.

Wow, big developing story with Cup leader Kyle Busch having a tire go down. He was sitting in good position too.

Crom-Viscera
03-06-2011, 05:17 PM
He's a nice looking guy and seems pretty marketable. If he shows he can consistently race well, then no reason he shouldn't get a full time gig next year. If he does this week in and week out though, it's a different story.

if he has good finishes the rest of the year he'll sign a full time Sprint Cup series contract. he's on my fantasy so i wanna see him do well not just for me but for himself

Biffle pissed about his fuel can.

doesnt look as if Trevor Bayne is gonna have a good finish in today's race. Biffle after having the fuel can issue is holding his position in the top 5

About halfway into the green flag run, Stewart slowly increasing his lead, running a brilliant race thus far.

Biffle out of gas. Car stalling now, costly time running.

WOW and now caution. Biffle's chances of winning are well over now.

I would be fine with Smoke winning, I just hope Jr. finishes the day off with no mistakes.

MooseWithFleas

I just don't think they got enough gas in the car. Biffle is somehow only 1 lap down, so he could be a lucky dog candidate in the near future. Biffle ******** on his pit crew right now.

if Hendrick Motorsports did not choose to swap the crew chiefs of just Gordon Martin and Dale Jr and also swapped Jimmie Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus u'd see all 4 Hendrick cars racing well but instead u see Dale Jr gaining the most out of this shakeup. JJ is racing as well and Mark Martin has had his share of bad luck so far with getting in a wreck twice i believe and with Gordon getting the win last week after wrecking the week before. with Dale Jr's top 10 finish today it looks to me like he'll have the highest spot in points of all 4 Hendrick cars

NC_RaiderFan5
03-06-2011, 10:22 PM
I don't care what Rick Hendrick says, Mark got the short end of the stick with Lance McGrew. They had a decent car at Daytona and fought back after the wreck for a top 10, but they have had to work hard for 13th last week and 18th this week.

It's only 1 week off. They do it because they spend 2 weekends in Daytona and then go West for 2 weeks. It just gives teams time to gather themselves after 2 big travels.
