Blake Griffin jumped over a car and threw down an alley-oop dunk to win the 2011 Dunk Contest over the weekend. However, former NBA player and dunking sensation Shawn Kemp didn't think much of it.

The 41-year-old joined KJR in Seattle with Dave Mahler and Ian Furness on Wednesday and called Griffin's final dunk "weak."

"I'm a big Blake Griffin fan, but that dunk at the contest might've been the weakest dunk in the dunk contest that I've seen in a long time," Kemp said. "I love the choir and all that stuff was great, but you at least gotta jump over the car though right."

Kemp also said that he could jump over a car.

"I'm 41 years old and right now I could do it. Two Smart Cars," he said.

The interview was transcribed by Sports Radio Interviews...

Kemp is 100% right. The thing that annoys me is the fact that major sports media treats the dunk like it's legendary.

It was legendary when Hook Mitchell did it. Hook did this the first time in a dunk contest in 1989. Oh and Hook was only 5'9. Peep:

Him locked up doing dunks: Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tqxZLMJvsc&feature=related)

And if you 6'9, none of that over the hood stuff Blake. You need to be doing this: Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUStpyH9SvU)

Now you have to add James Johnson to your sig. I wish him the best of luck with the Raptors. He has a crazy skillset but just couldn't crack the rotation and when he had his chance, he played out of control. He played a good game tonight against the Bulls. You will enjoy watching his athleticism and shooting touch.

Wade wouldn't be a good dunker for this competition. He has ups but he uses more of explosiveness for his dunks in real life which make them look good. Doing a powerful dunk in a dunk contest means nothing if it isn't flashy. With that said the guys I would like to see in the dunk contest would be Josh Smith, Lebron James, Demar DeRozan, Shannon Brown, Dwight Howard, Serge Ibaka and Javale Mcgee.

i agree with Kemp. that dunk sucked. Griffen jumped over the lowest point of the car. he jumped about mid-way into the paint, and all he had to do was lift his legs to clear it. 90% of the players in the league could have done this. black people everywhere were saying "i could do that". it would have only been impressive if he jumped over the highest point of the car.

I do agree that Griffin's dunk was nothing special. It was all show and no athletic ability... Ibaka jumped twice the distance and got a 44 out of 50. If he had a choir singing behind him he probably would have gotten a 50 too. I also agree that Griffin could have won this contest without trying, he is LA's new darling and since the contest was in LA is competition had no chance. DeRozan's second dunk was the best in my opinion.

Swashcuff

I fully agree that the dunk over the car was extremely weak. I mean I've jumped over the highest part of my buddy's Yaris (not while dunking but literally hurdling) and seeing Blake jump over the the lowest part of a car was just not impressive in the very least.

If Blake was able to do complete that dunk from behind the backboard it would have been arguable the best dunk I've ever seen in the history of the Dunk Contest.

blake is an overratted dunker. he had great dunk in the beginning of the season, after that it all been overrated by ESPN

Omar Little
02-24-2011, 10:09 AM
The part that annoyed me the most was that with all the spectacle of the intro, they brought out some weird looking, unusually long car, which led me to think is he gonna jump over it lengthwise? That would have been amazing. But then they parked it sideways in front of the hoop, forcing him to only have to jump like 3 feet? If that was the plan all along then they might as well of used a '94 Buick Century as the prop car! What was the point?

NYKfan15

With all due respect to Blake Griffin, he is a great basketball player, but that was totally weak. I think Shawn Kemp is 100 percent right. Anybody could jump over a hood of a car and that dunk was nothing special (I thought the choir part was pretty awesome tho). But in the words of Keyshawn Johnson, "C'mon man."

I didn't watch the AS Dunk Contest live. When I heard reports from friends and teasers by ESPN (without haven't seen the video personally) that Blake jumped over a car and slammed the ball, the image in my mind's eye was of him leaping length-wise over the car, rising over the highest point of the passenger cabin, and then coming down to slam the ball in the rim. That, to me, is how I define jumping over a car.

And then I saw the video of Blake's actual dunk. I was not impressed.

The hyperbole ruined it for me. He didn't jump over a car, he jumped over the hood of a car. Having played streetball on a busy street with lots of parked cars around, I can tell you that sort of thing has been done plenty of times back when I was growing up, and by guys who weren't 6'10", and over the hoods of cars like the big *** 1970's Cadillac DeVilles and Broughams, Lincoln Continential Mark series and Ford Thunderbirds -- in short, cars that were as wide as that Kia is long.

you people are funny...Blake won get over it.
I am sure if he would have jumped over the top of the hood as opposed to the hood people would be saying "well it wasnt a big car anyway, it was a Kia" you would find a reason to talk **** no matter what
Stop Already...ONCE AGAIN
it is not Blakes fault that McGee left his best dunks for the beggining of the contest instead of the Final Round
The fact that you're a Clips fan (based on what I saw from a different thread) and your sig ruin your credibility. That aside, it was not a good dunk. And what makes you think people would've said something negative if he had jumped over the roof of the car? A lot of people, including myself, would have appreciated the dunk if he had actually jumped over the highest part of the car instead of the hood.

Seriously?

Yes I'm serious...it hasn't been about the dunk for a while now. It's all about props and crap like that now.

He is right. Nate could have done that and made it look more spectacular. Worst winning dunk ever

I wasn't that impressed either. Take away the car and it was a simple alley-oop.

today's fans immediately say oh "that guy from the past is just jealous" whenever they criticize someone playing now. Someone said Blake's highlights at this point are better than Kemps career? That dude was a monster. People should get on youtube and check him out.

These are 10 dunks from him:

these are random dunks and highlights:

There are similarities between the 2 but people only see Griffin's monster dunks and assume this guy Kemp is some retired bum who's jealous. Not the case. Kemp was a beast in his day. Didn't score as much as Griffin but he gave some crazy highlights and was a big part of their championship run
