View Full Version : Most impressive dunk contest?

Is this the best dunk contest all time? If not, when was the last dunk contest that was better?

Ibaka jumped behind the free throw line, DeRozan has two really solid dunks. McGeee did something insane, and Griffin isn't dissapointing (so far).

I know it's early, but its really been a good dunk contest so far.

No. 1988 and 2000 were better than what we've seen so far tonight. Iggy's dunks in 06 were sick too.

I found it funny that Erving didn't give Ibaka a 10 for jumping behind the free throw line. A 7 footer dunking behind the line? Really special imo.

MacFitz92

I disagree, it seems like everything has been taken. Takes a lot of creativity to come up with new dunks.

The whole thing with the kid, Mcgees mom, and now the choir, this is awful. Just ****ing dunk.

You have to add creativity to get points. Just look at Ibaka, nothing flashy, but his dunk was amazing. He got robbed straight up.

Sure this dunk contest is corny but some of these guys are really creative because it is not easy to come up with new dunks after all that has been done.

I agree with that. McGee was better. Ibaka was 2nd. Griffin had one good dunk.

I can understand griffin being a lock for the finals but come Derozan deserved to in the finals. DD 1st rnd dunks were more creative overall and was robbed!! Bu!!*****.

Ibaka was cheated. A 45 for a dunk that DR J was SUPPOSED to do, but didnt? It was legendary when Julius did it, and Ibaka does it, and its completely overlooked

it started great but the NBA ruined it. and too much set up for Griffins dunk and it was lame as hell. anyone who can dunk could do that. he shouldnt have even been in the finals.

The first round was the best first round I've ever seen. That was an amazing first round.

Btw, Ibaka got robbed with that TRUE FREE THROW LINE DUNK!

And DeRozan always gets robbed. He had the best dunk of the contest

I agree 100%. Like why cant they actually just do a nice dunk rather than making it a competition of who has the best gimmick? IMO, derozan was robbed this year.

best all time is STILL vince carter.

I think if mcGee did that first dunk with the 2 baskets, in the finals, he probably would've won, but the fans voted so that explained everything.

Thats cuz mcgee shouldn't have been in the finals. Derozans 2nd dunk was unreal, his first one was sick too and he only got a 44!! ibaka got 45 for biteing a teddy bear!!!!

Not the best of all-time, no. It was highly entertaining and the fact that last year's competition sucked donkey balls only helped its cause.

The best I saw was the one VC won with the likes of Tmac and Stevie Franchise. The one with Mason and JRich was good too. Those 2 were better than this one which had an amazing first round and an awful finals.

Best first round ever. Definitely the WORST finals ever. Yes, worse than Fred Jones and Jason Richardson. Overall, meh.

'88 will always hold a special place in my heart as a MJ fan but I think I can unbiasedly say the head to dual that whole event was just ridiculous.

'00 is definitely number two though. VC changed the game that year.

I'd say top to bottom this may be the best ever as far as average quality of the dunks but it didn't quite have the dual of '88 and the pure freakishness of VC in '00.

Best dunk of the night was the two-balls imho. And Ibaka really was robbed on the first true FT dunk ever. Mcgee's 1st dunk second round was disgusting as well. It will be one of those "lost dunks" years from now.

^This. I kinda feel like all 4 dunkers should have more dunks i.e. cumulative score or something. Much love for SERGE!

Oh, and thank god that Nate-Rob didn't steal another dunk title or even participate. That makes it better in-it-of-itself.

I thought Demar got screwed but I'm a Raptors fan. ;)

As for the dunk contest. I really loved the first round dunks but wasn't as impressed with the second round. Jumping over the car was great but the whole act was glorified and hypocritical. You had Kenny 10 minutes before, claiming that you don't need all the theatrics in a dunk contest; just you and the ball.

Javale McGee's first dunk was definitely a high level of difficulty dunk. But that was the only dunk I was impressed by. 3 balls was cool concept but it didn't look it. It was funny seeing Dr. J kiss his mom on the lips.

Serge was awesome. I didn't expect him to do much in this competition but he pulled off two solid dunks.

At the end of the day, I thought Demar's "Show Stopper" was the best dunk of the night. A good contest.

Derozan got robed IMO... Blake had 2 great dunks too, but the car war BS... Javale 3balls and 2 rims should go to the circus. And Ibakas FT dunk was sick, but the bear? come on man...

NBA should prohibit extra items in the court. Player(s) ball and rim thats it...

Exactly its becoming about who has the bst gimmick

Todays was great...then before that the Dwight Howard one where he put on a cape...before that Jason Richardsons where did like a reverse through the legs.....
(i am not counting Vince Carters because people overrate that contest and give him credit when he did dunks that EVERYONE always DOES....same ole same ole (minus the elbow)

Sometimes props/players to jump over are good, but there should be some kind of limit for sure. Gimmicks should not define the dunk contest, it should be about showcasing athleticism and creativity. Problem is most people consider creativity to be the use of unnecessary props. Dwight Howard's sticker dunk and Nate Robinson's dunk over Spud Webb are some examples of acceptable prop use, but the best dunks all time don't include props.

Vince Carter had the best dunk contest performance of all time. The elevation he got was unreal, along with the degree of difficulty on each dunk. Just cuz someone gets praised for something doesn't mean the hype is undeserved, so no need to call Vince's dunks overrated. Same goes for your sig, comparing LeBron to Maggette is wrong.

When VC did those dunks he didn't have 2 minutes to miss 5 attempts before finally doing it. He nailed all those dunks with impact. No one in the NBA has ever completely dominated like he did.

I honestly thought this contest sucked. It just gets worse and worse.
I was so annoyed no one could do anything first try, and no one had any flash or thrills, the most thrills they tried giving were fricken gimmicks like A CHOIR!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS? and the car was dumb jumping the small hood, the teddy bear....give me a break 2000 hands down destroys this everyone just went out had swag and DUNKED. Not to mention those dunks were amazing, Vinsanity's...Tmac's 360...Stevie getting up 40+...cant top that contest..

Was a let down tonight imo.

I wish to god that posters would think back or do some history lessons before they blurt complete crap out. Like "BEST PASS EVER ALL TIME BY WADE" and now "BEST DUNK CONTEST EVER!"
smh..

MacFitz92

Let's be honest. Being in a dunk contest is EXTREMELY hard nowadays.

You have to do something new, something flashy, something difficult, and something with a lot of air.

You saw Serge Ibaka do something that was the same thing Jordan and Erving did that was "legendary". He got a 45.

It's hard to create new stuff every year that is entertaining, and I thought McGee did a FANTASTIC job of doing so.

John Walls Era
02-20-2011, 04:35 AM
I thought Derozan did 2 dunks thats never been done before . But I guess he couldn't advance because he didn't get his mom to makeout with the judges or a choir to start singing.
