No, they were able to somewhat salvage his car and didn't have to go to a back up.

You now what I DO like about these two car breakaways... it allows a lesser car to draft to the front. Like a Regan Smith, and to a lesser extent, an AJ Allmendinger.

Well, by lesser cars, I mean non-Championship cars. Not necessarily worse teams when it comes to a standalone race, but more so in the grand scheme of things.

With all the big cars out so far, we could have a surprise winner.

Yeah, that's the idea, and that could work. But they're not in any less danger in the middle of pack when the cars are that spread out, and when there are so little cars on the lead lap.

I'd rather race up front, have that position, and test some things out.

2. Edwards
3. Gilliland

Yet I just typed that.

Great ending. Great winner. Great racing.

Overall, I disliked this race. This felt like Roller Derby, not racing.

trevor bayne has the best car all day, he pushed so many people to the front, and won it when it counts. saying lesser quality cars won is a disgrace.

the cars have to maintain a certain horsepower to be in this. they can run balls out, and suck. their goal is to win it, not matter what team they drive for.

Are you seriously trying to say that Bayne, Edwards, Gilliland and Bobby Labonte had 4 of the best cars all day?

This race was a roller derby. These guys finished towards the front simply by staying out of trouble. Bayne had a good car, though not a top car all day. Edwards, Gilliland and Labonte did nothing until the end.

Despite all the cautions it was still a well run race. It wasn't some jerk face knocking guys out for no reason. It was damn good racing the whole way with just some unfortunate accidents because of the 2 car drafts. I wasn't sold on the 2 car deals but it made for a lot of movement up and down.

Kyle Busch is really going to have to learn how to run like that though. They said he said he doesn't like pushing or getting pushed and it showed with the way he ran.

When 3 of the top 4 run as well as they have despite being in lesser funded teams it's a successful day. I love the underdog in a big race like this.

There were just way too many cautions. There was over 60 laps ran under yellow. Almost 1/3 of the race.

I like the lesser teams being competitive, but at the end of that, that just means that you have to be more lucky than good.

Luckily this is just one race of the year.

Bayne was running up front for a lot of the race and pushed a few different guys to the front. I'd hardly call this staying out of trouble, I'd say he was more lucky then anything. He had one of the better calls all day long & I think most will agree

Nymfan87
02-20-2011, 07:34 PM
I just don't think there is any strategy involved in the two car packs. It's basically just push the hell out of the guy in front of you until you need to swap, then get the hell pushed out of you, and it keeps repeating. With the huge pack of cars, you have to decide which line is better, when to pull out of line, who you want around you, and so on. I just can't see where driver skill is involved in this type of racing when you can just keep your foot down and drag the brakes a tiny bit. Handling issues are nonexistent.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the only reason why he got through the first big crash of the race at lap 29 because he was so far behind that pack he actually had time to slow down and not get caught up in it? I thought I had remembered seeing him as one of the cars behind the pack, not ahead of it.

We really don't know how good of a car he had. He was always pushing someone, but he was always up in the lead pack for most of the day. He ran well and I think Ragan is who held him back. The black flag was the best thing to happen for the race so the kid could do his thing and it worked.

I have a problem with the "good driver" tag. All 43 guys on the track are good drivers or they wouldn't be there. I think your quote ment to read "it tells me that it obviously didn't take a Superstar Driver to do well today."

To add to that, Marcos Ambrose ran well with the 47 team that Bobby is driving with now. Bobby may be past his prime but he's still a good driver, just hasn't been with a good team.

Gilliland has run well with a low budget Yates team and has bounced around but has still been competitive with a car that wasn't a start and park.

Paul Menard has been OK. He might get over that fringe (Cup/Nationwide driver) that he was on with finally being part of a well funded program with great resources to win. When he started with DEI, he was a bottom of that team's totem poll and that was a big drop off. They weren't all that great of a team anymore at that point. I thought he'd be better suited as a Nationwide driver but he has his father's company that has kept him in the Cup series. Now, he just has to make it pay off with the virtually endless resources Childress gives him. Harvick and Burton were supposed to be up there so once they were done he and Bowyer got all those resources to work off of to make their team stronger.

Smith is another victim of DEI dying. The 78 team has ran well at plate races and continued it today.

It may be some strange names but the teams aren't exactly slouches. Other than Menard with RCR, 2 of these teams are in that 2nd tier behind Hendrick, Roush, RCR, Penske and Ganassi and then Gilliland's team in the 3rd tier. The Wood Brothers team has been better suited with the limited schedule to fully prepare the cars and fund them correctly and that's why they run well when they can race and stay out of trouble.

you dont have to like it but its 100x better then watching people drive in circles until the last lap, and wrecking each other all day.

if you watch to see the boring merry go round, then i highly doubt you have ever experienced anything in any shape, or form that is exciting.

everything evolves, nacsar is evloving they are trying to draw in new fans, and the ones who left it. if you want old school racing, go to your local tracks and watch the D league racers do that boring ****.

you race to win, at all costs, that doesnt mean you have to play follow the leader. there was more passing today in the two car hookups then anyother time at the 500, thats makes for competition and excitment. if you fail to understand that, i cant help you, you dont have to like it, but you either have to accept it or not watch it any longer, this is not 1975 or 1985, or 1995, or even 2005 its 2011.

He has never finished about 27th in the standings...

It's not that these drivers don't have talent, it's that these teams just simply cannot be a contender for the Chase. It takes a lot of other factors besides talent to be competitive. As a driver, everything has to fall in place. As a team, you need funding and sponsorships.

But Bayne, Gilliland, and Labonte are not anywhere close to top teams.

Daytona is full of surprises and guys can run much better. With the the old draft you can change 5+ positions in 1/2 a lap and it lead to some lesser teams finishing high. This 2 car thing is similar but it's not as much jostling back in the pack, it's all up front.

Look at Keselowski's win at Talledega. That was a fluke thing too. Today the lesser teams stayed out of trouble, ran well, finished well and it really didn't make it less of an exciting race unless you are so stuck on the top teams running at the top all the time. Sometimes they run well at points in the race and then fade.

I didn't think Bayne would win until Carl seemed to just settle in behind him rather than trying to make a run on him coming off of 4. It usually seems like that kind of sedimental story doesn't come through and someone comes in to crash the party. David Ragan experienced that portion of it though.
