View Full Version : Amar'e: Nobody's afraid of the heat

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Miami Heat come to town Thursday night with two of the top-five scorers in the NBA and the second-stingiest defense in the league. But Amare Stoudemire doesn't seem too worried.

"Nobody's afraid of the Miami Heat," Stoudemire said Wednesday afternoon.

This despite the fact the New York Knicks have lost two games to the Heat (31-13) this season, including a 22-point laugher at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 17 in which LeBron James had a triple double (32 points, 10 assists, 11 rebounds).

But they'll be facing a Miami team on Thursday that's without power forward Chris Bosh, who is sidelined with a high ankle sprain. (Bosh burned the Knicks for 26 points in their first Garden meeting.)

"Now, the focus really becomes [Dwyane] Wade and James even more," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said.

The Knicks snapped a six-game losing streak -- their second of the season -- by beating the lowly Wizards on Monday night at the Garden. One major reason they were able to break out of their malaise was the play of Wilson Chandler, who scored 25 points to break out of his own personal slump.

"We definitely need his scoring," point guard Raymond Felton said.

In the Knicks' recent six-game skid, Chandler broke the 14-point mark just once, shooting just 36 percent (29-of-80) during the stretch.

"Whether it's a coincidence or not, I don't know. But when we were 3-8 [to start the season] he didn't shoot the ball well. Now we were 0-6 and he didn't shoot the ball well. And when he's shot the ball well, we've won," D'Antoni said.

"So, now you can't put it all on him. We also had Amare's shooting percentage down, Ray's down, different guys have been down. But he's a big piece for us, and when he plays well, it usually leads to good things."

Chandler missed practice with a sore calf on Wednesday, but D'Antoni said he sat out for precautionary reasons and will be ready to go Thursday night. The Knicks are 10-6 when Chandler shoots 50 percent or higher this season.

It also helps that Felton found his touch Monday night. He shot just 29-of-94 (31 percent) during the Knicks' six-game skid but scored 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting in the 115-106 win over Washington.

"Everybody goes through slumps, but I think we're OK," Felton said.

For what it's worth, Stoudemire is confident the Knicks can beat the Heat, who are holding teams to just 43 percent shooting. The Knicks were embarrassed during their first meeting at MSG, getting outscored 56-34 in the second half. They were more competitive in the second meeting in Miami, losing by eight after rallying in the second half.

Stoudemire has seen signs of improvement and looks at Thursday night's matchup as a chance to prove something to James, Wade and the rest of the league.

"We had a chance to win both games. So we feel like we're still improving," Stoudemire said. "We still have something to prove. We're trying to get better as a team and it starts tomorrow night."

Is this worth a thread? Everyone knew no one is afraid of the Heat, neither is any team afraid of any team. They all get paid at the end of the day.

This might mean more coming from a team that isnt in the middle of a terrible string of losses. I thought the Knicks would be better than they appear now.

Last season in the playoffs he did a lot of that directed to Odom..

Can't say he's wrong about what he said though, I don't think any team is scared of anyone.. Unless you're the Cavs.

I like the smack talking. Its much needed in todays game full of soft players trying to be friends with each other instead of competitors. Like Larry Bird said I hated the player I was playing against. That should be mentality of all true superstars.

i don't ordinarily like to hear the smack talk before the game. it is irrelevent. however, if you are going to shoot off your pie hole, you had better be prepared to back it up (amare getting 28 and 12 in a loss is not backing it up)

if you want to talk, you'd better go out and win.

This is stuff you don't tell your opponent or the media (same thing). Amare is the typical: Kid at school that brags about their grades (even though its only an 80), while the geniuses just smirk and keep quiet about their A+.

PS: Is Amare afraid of the Celtics then?

Yeah it'll still be a good win. It's just funny since Bosh would match up with Amare. Not that Bosh is a great defensive presence, but on the offensive end he did put up 26-7 in NY in December.

but if it does, you cant disrespect that win for the knicks by saying it doesnt count because bosh is out.

I mean, come on...the bulls have had their number 2 and/or their number 3 player out for the entire season, so what, whenever a team beats us we can use that as an excuse? no way. That would just be...jerky.

Been said but..

Amare doesn't need to be talking right now. He should be focusing on getting his team on the right track.

BUT he is right. No one is, or should be, afraid of a Heat team that hasn't won anything yet. They're calling them the best Big 3 of all time - That's a joke. Win ONE title, and then you can at least be thrown SOMEWHAT into contention. It's ridiculous how much they're talked up.

before the season? sure

i dont think so so much now,the aura as kinda faded from the summer.not to say they are a bad team, they're a very good team.but i dont think anyone sees them as any more or less special as other top teams at this point.hell i think you'd get more picks for boston to come out of the east

Well how are the Knicks supposed to 'look good' when recently Felton has been fighting injuries because he plays 40+ mins every night, the backup PG has TWO bum shoulders but continues to play (and suck), Gallinari was hurt, Turiaf was banged up, and now Amar'e is starting to wear down as well.

This just goes to show how important depth is on a team. We don't have it this year, and I am pleased that Donnie isn't rushing to make any Carmelo 5 for 1 trades, and will be using our cap space to shore up our holes.
