New Orleans general manager Dell Demps has discussed the framework of a multiyear deal with West’s agents at Octagon, but the Hornets’ hopes of getting him signed prior to the Feb. 24 trade deadline is “not likely at all,” one source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports.

West plans to opt out of the $7.5 million owed him in the final season of a five-year, $45 million contract and expects to command north of $10 million a season on the market, sources said.

“It’s hard to see an extension happening here,” one source said.

The Hornets have played pretty well this year, so it would be hard for them to trade their starting PF, but at the same time, can you risk him walking at seasons end? Tough situation for Demps, especially since the whole thing will affect how much Paul wants to stay or leave when his contract is up. Nothing is imminent, but still, quite interesting.

he's not worth 10 mils a year

He's overrated in my opinion..

But the Hornets have a respectable record and are only 3 games behind for 2nd place.. I cannot imagine them trading him without really getting something to improve their team.

I wonder who'd take him.

But there are a lot of players who would do great beside Okafor that stretches the floor.

He was putting up solid numbers well before Okafor arrived.

He may not be worth 10 million, but he will get it. That's just how the NBA works these days.

West staying or leaving, will not have an affect on CP3......... He's gone no matter what.

Yeah they arent going to trade him while the team is doing so well. You can't just take such an important player out of the lineup an expect the same results. If the Hornets can't come to an agreement with West, they're probably going to have to bite the bullet on this one and lose him to free agency after the season.

If I was the Hornets, I'd try to trade West for a jumpshooting big man to spread the floor or an atheletic one who can get bare alley oops.

I'd look at Nene only because him and Paul would be nasty.

Sounds perfect for the Suns. Is he also bad at rebounding? Cause then he'll fit in right away and expect for the Suns to make him top 5 paid player in the NBA.

David west is not worth 10 mil. he is one of the most overrated players in the nba. but i dont see the hornets trading him, considering they have a solid record and probably will be in the playoffs. well, at least id say.

I think that hes underrated. Never mentioned with the top PF but always avg 20 and 8. He also hit a game winner with .5 seconds tonight

Could West be a starting piece in an attempt to land Melo in New Orleans along side Chris Paul?

Why are people saying David West isn't worth around $10M?

He fits the Hornets. 4yr/$40M sounds good.

David West will probably get an extension, and get over-paid.

Personally I would hate the move. He's already 30 years old, and I don't see a reason to re-sign a guy to some 5 year deal. I say let him play this season out, and try to sign someone like Jeff Green.

Whoever signs David West, whether it be New Orleans, Indiana, Sacramento or any other team with cap room, will end up overpaying the guy.

Overrated and undersized. Hes the typical: So underrated before AS birth, very overrated after the AS birth.

Wow if they end up losing Dwest and Cp3 after this season.. Damn.

At least they have a SB.... Winning 1 championship allows for a decade of suck-ness (MLB, NBA, NFL are connected in this sense).

His New Orleans #2 All-Time Scorer, Hornets drafted him in 03', his definitely not worth that amount but he'll get the extension, him and Chris Paul are bros they won't leave New Orleans! Maybe i can settle for 4yr/38-40M I'm fine with that
