The NBA formally approved the Alexis Ajinca trade to the Toronto Raptors Monday afternoon, which allowed the Dallas Mavericks to quickly sign forward Peja Stojakovic.

Mavs president Donnie Nelson confirmed that Stojakovic, released by the Raptors on Thursday, has been signed.

Owner Mark Cuban welcomed Stojakovic to the team via his Twitter account: "Peja is now a Mav ! Time to let him drop some of those 3s on the bad guys
Dallas sends Ajinca to Toronto and will pay the remainder of his $1.5 million salary for the season and return a future second-round pick that Toronto had sent Dallas during the 2010 draft last June, as well as cash considerations. In return, Dallas would receive the rights to 2007 second-round pick Georgios Printezis (who plays in Spain and is no longer considered an NBA prospect) and create a trade exception equal to Ajinca's $1.5 millon salary along with the open roster spot needed to sign Stojakovic.

The trade appeared to be a done deal Thursday night when the Mavs played at Chicago. Ajinca was even sent from the United Center back to the team hotel. However, the process became delayed when some teams lodged complaints that the Mavs and Raptors arranged the deal to circumvent the salary cap.

Stojakovic will take a physical to officially join the team. After Monday's practice, coach Rick Carlisle said Stojakovic will not play Tuesday night when the Mavs open a four-game homestand against the Los Angeles Clippers, and possibly would not be ready for Thursday's game against Houston.

Stojakovic has been bothered by a knee issue and has played just eight games this season for the New Orleans Hornets and Raptors. He hasn't played in a game since Nov. 26.

"He's coming off a situation where he's missed some time due to a minor knee injury," Carlisle said. "There's going to be a period where we have to make sure his conditioning and health is right before we put him on the floor. I don't know what that period of time is going to be, but I think it's important to understand that this is not just simply a turn-key thing and now you've got a starter."

This could go 2 ways:

1. He makes a lot of 3's and plays like he used to and helps us out a lot at the vacant starting SF spot

Or

2. He plains out sucks, and leave him on the bench since he will only be making vet min.

Thank god he isnt making that huge expiring!!!

Fits in with the way he chokes in the playoffs

He should be a good stop gap for the regular season and likely will start to give Dirk and Kidd room, but he is no Caron

Not bad add for us. I'd rather have Peja than Novak or Ajinca. If he can come in and just knock down the open looks he gets in stretches I'm satisfied.

This won't be Dallas' last move before the deadline

Peja was known as the biggest playoff choker in the league for the 1st half of the last decade

Stats show Peja's numbers are the same in the season and playoffs :)

Except 3 pt, they are down just a tad bit in playoffs

Dang I forgot Peja is a 3 time all star!!!! Haha he fell off fast, hopefully he has a TAD BIT of that all star form left

He was known for missing in big situations, late in games, game winners, etc. And he would not just miss, he would air ball, clank off the backboard, etc.

and he was more than an all-star, the guy nearly won MVP in 2004

I miss the old Peja. Kings had so much talent at the SF spot for awhile. Peja, Hedo, Gerald Wallace. Yes I know Gerald wasn't what he is now. Still had raw talent.

Low risk, low reward ... He`s done in this league, but he can always hit a 3...maybe that`s why they brought him. To hit a 3 against Spurs? Mark would love that :D

MAVs are the only team that NEVER scares me honestly. So no matter what they add, a first round exit is what most likely going to happen again. I can't picture them getting through the Spurs and Lakers in my wildest dream.

Not really. He came 4th, sure, but he was a loooong way back. Garnett got 120 (of 123) first place votes. There wasn't anything 'nearly' about it.

He won't make a big impact but it's still a good addition.

And for people calling him a chocker in the playoffs, I doubt the mavs will need him in big game situations since he's not that same player he was before. Mavs got other players like Dirk for those situations.

What does this have to do with tampering?

the trade that occured with the raptors at the same time the raptors buy-out Peja that allows him to sign with the Mavs. That doesn't seem fishy to you?

He did also make some big shots in the playoffs against Dallas and Minnesota.

He had a bad series against LA in 2002, but he was also injured and only played 2 games in that series with a high ankle sprain.

Its not really fair to label him a choker because of that one series where he clearly wasnt at full strength.

Plus, the Kings should have won that series anyway.

Toronto gave Dallas permission to talk to Peja's agent weeks before. Nothing illegal there.

This will help if Peja gets hot around the playoffs, otherwise he'll be keeping his seat on the bench warm.

LTBaByyy
01-28-2011, 07:29 PM
You gotta admit, playing for Dallas will open his eyes and he will play way better

Dirk is close with Peja and playing with Jason Kidd always upgrades your game no matter who you are

Than in Toronto when you got raw young talent plus scrubs on the team

Just like they said on PTI when it happened. Everyone that has been an all star and goes to Toronto ends up wanting to leave then plays better

Eh not that big of a deal. They add another shooter and some size but Peja is no defender, and they should have traded for S-Jax. Surprised to hear Cuban is being cheap.
