1 (2) Spurs 35-6 How (else) do we know that the Spurs are rolling? They're shooting 77.7 percent from the free throw line, which happens to be the team's best reading from the stripe since 1979-80, when it shot 80.1 percent.

2 (4) Celtics 30-9 There's plenty of time to dig into KG's return. Shaq's first 20-point, five-
block night since '04-05 -- on the same night T-Mac scored 22 and Chicago's Kurt Thomas snagged 18 boards -- had to be recorded here for posterity.

3 (1) Heat 30-12 Have to factor in LeBron's injury last week, but the fact remains that the Heat's blemish is a 4-8 mark against the rest of our top 10 ... although they still haven't played two residents: Oklahoma City and San Antonio.

4 (7) Bulls 27-13 December began with L's to the Magic and Celts and forced thumb surgery on Joakim Noah halfway through the month, but D-Rose's Bulls are a tidy 18-5 since Dec. 4. Only the Spurs (19-3) and Heat (18-4) can top that.

5 (5) Lakers 30-12 Even with their recent offensive resurrection and seven straight wins before they lost Sunday's Staples scrap with the Clippers, I'm not sure that the champs would be back in the top five if injuries hadn't derailed Dallas. You?

6 (3) Magic 26-14 If you didn't believe that overhauled Orlando has to win a championship to keep Dwight Howard committed to staying in the Magic Kingdom, you're encouraged to visit the Weekend Dime. Answer No. 6 out of 10, specifically.

7 (8) Thunder 27-13 We repeat: For all of OKC's slippage on D and the undeniable need for more size, whom in the Northwest Division would you regard as more dependable or playoff-dangerous than the team with the league's highest-scoring duo?

8 (6) Mavericks 26-13 Losing Caron Butler for the season right after Dirk went down robbed Dallas of the Mav best suited to fill in for Dirk as its go-to guy. The result: Dirk's finally back, but a troubling amount of the Mavs' 24-5 momentum is gone.

9 (10) Jazz 27-13 This is a different team -- a 20-1 team -- when it scores 100 points. With Okur back and C.J. Miles up to nine 20-point games off the bench, maybe Utah has a second half in store to render our OKC comment premature.

10 (13) Hornets 25-16 Not many have noticed with so much Melo chaos unfolding and the usual focus on the big boys, but we have: New Orleans has won four in a row -- and five of six on the road -- in its first run resembling the 11-1 start.

11 (9) Hawks 26-15 Even those of us hammering the Hawks for fattening up on sub-.500 teams -- at 22-6 -- can't completely dismiss their 10-game home winning streak. Not when they outscored the opposition by an average of 11.1 points.

12 (12) Trail Blazers 21-20 Props all around for what's left of the Blazers, who are 11-7 without B-Roy (compared to 10-13 with him) and have Aldridge (one of the NBA's top five bucket getters from five feet and in) scoring inside like never before.

13 (16) Nuggets 23-17 Trivia to pass the time: Who was the last player with a scoring average as high as Melo's 23.1 ppg to be dealt in-season? Denver was involved in that one, too, snagging Allen Iverson from Philly in December 2006.

14 (14) Grizzlies 19-21 If the Grizz don't extend his contract before June 30, Z-Bo will be one of the most fascinating free agents of the eventual offseason. He's one of just five 20/10 guys going along with K-Love, Dwight, Blake and Boozer.

15 (11) Knicks 22-17 You know by now that I'm going to mention Bernard King every chance I get, so thanks, Amare: Stoudemire's 24 straight games with at least 20 points tied BK for third in team history, five behind Richie Guerin's record.

16 (19) Clippers 14-25 They're 13-12 since that 1-13 start. They just beat the Heat and the Lakers in the space of five days. They'll have the Angeleno, we say again, gawked at more than any other at L.A.'s All-Star Weekend. The Clips, people.

17 (17) Rockets 18-23 Road wins of the highest quality, in Boston and Atlanta, only somewhat ease the Rockets' dismay with themselves, after falling to 0-4 in overtime games and a recent four-game skid in which they led by at least nine in all four.

18 (18) 76ers 16-23 If the Sixers end up missing out on the playoffs, they'll know exactly where to point for Culprit No. 1: Philly is 2-8 in games decided by five points or fewer. And Charlotte and Milwaukee still look capable of capitalizing.

19 (15) Bucks 14-23 Of the Bucks' first 37 games, 26 came against .500-or-better teams. The combo of an easier schedule and health that has to get better is why you keep hearing know-it-alls like me say they have a second-half run in them.

20 (21) Suns 17-21 The recent home escape against a Cavs team starting Manny Harris and Christian Eyenga began a stretch with seven games out of 10 against sub-.500 teams. A stretch Alvin Gentry openly admits "is basically our season."

21 (20) Warriors 16-23 The Warriors' first stop after this crazy stretch of home games (16 of the next 19) is Feb. 27 in Minnesota. Our question: Will Monta Ellis and K-Love be reliving All-Star glories or commiserating about their snubs?

22 (22) Bobcats 15-23 We know they've played faster and freer since Silas took over. The home wins over Memphis and Chicago to start last week, however, were the first W's of real quality in the Silas era, aided by the return of G-Wallace.

23 (24) Pacers 16-21 Make that 0-4 when Indy goes for a third straight W. Detroit, Washington, New Jersey, Minnesota and Sacramento are the only other teams that have yet to win more than two in a row. (Notice Cleveland isn't on this list?)

24 (24) Pistons 14-26 It still hasn't quite sunk in, no matter how
much time these molasses-slow trade talks have provided, that the former powerhouse that could have drafted Melo is now an up-for-sale third team facilitating a Melo trade.

25 (26) Timberwolves 10-31 The hardest thing to take for K-Love lovers praying that their guy sneaks onto the West squad for the All-Star Game is that the young Wolves' dismal record includes a league-high five L's after leading by 15 or more.

26 (28) Kings 9-29 If the Kings trade Beno Udrih, it's to shed his contract more than anything. Hard to blame the Slovenian for much when, in support of the blossoming Cousins, he's averaged 20.8 points in Sacramento's past six games.

27 (25) Raptors 13-27 Can this Canada lover get away with focusing on the fact that Jose Calderon recently joined Steve Nash in the exclusive two-man club of point guards with more than one 20-point, 15-assist game this season? Didn't think so.

28 (29) Wizards 11-27 The numbers are distressing wherever you look. The Wiz will become the sixth team in history to start a season 0-20 on the road if they can't win Wednesday at Milwaukee ... and J-Wall is shooting 35.7 percent in January.

29 (28) Nets 10-30 The Brook Lopez whom the Nets can excitedly sell to Melo: 35 points and 32 points in his past two games. The Brook Lopez whom the Nets hope Melo hasn't heard about: Only two double-digit rebound games all season.

30 (30) Cavaliers 8-32 At least there's still faint hope here of returning to the lofty heights of No. 29 with a hard-to-envision win streak at some stage. In Hollinger's system? Not sure you can recover from consecutive losses of 55, 22 and 28.

lots of good news for the Bulls in these rankings. Not to take glee in others' failures, but not only has our team moved up, but our rivals the Heat and the Knicks have moved down.

I'm honestly disappointed that the Heat have dropped 3 since Lebron went out. I know he's your best player, but damn, some other people gotta step up in his absence.

Look at the Bulls... Boozer was out, we won our games. Noah is out, we won our games. Today, Carlos AND noah was out, we won our game. The bench stepped up.

now I'm seeing that Wade is out with a knee problem too? Damn, all your big 3 are out. thats some tough luck

That's not really true. Lebron played 95% of the Clippers game. So we dropped 2 since Lebron went out.

Fortunately it's midseason and the Heat are playing it safe to assure readiness come playoff time.

As a Spurs fan, it's good to have the best record now I guess...but I don't care about finishing no #1 in the West.

I would give up the no.1 seed for a healthy postseason roster anyday. So I hope Pop will pace our guys at the right time.

35-6 gives us an incredibly nice cushion for the second half of the season.

No, you're right. It didn't merit an apology, but some of the things said (by me) were distasteful and unnecessary.

It's funny how the Spurs become a non-sexy pick to win it all not just because they have the leagues best record...but also because they care less about the media circus around the league. That just go out and play consistent basketball and win.

Spurs fans should thank people like LeBron, Kobe, Griffin, Melo and Mark Cuban for creating so much distraction in the media, causing the Spurs to be overlooked time and time again.

Wth does can this Canada lover ever get away from calderon mean??:S
He's a great playmaker and a PG we need and can use and can't afford to trade away and his defense is looking good this year too..
Although i disagree with where were ranked think the wizard are higher than us but i think were better than the kings..
I also don't agree with the bobcats ranking ever since they got a new coach they've been playing like they did last year some good ball
