View Full Version : Why does the NBA not care about the dunk contest anymore?

Realistically, they could get huge ratings with the dunk contest, but they simply choose not to because of stupidity.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, there were 8 or 9 competitors and three rounds of dunks, three dunks per round. In the 1984 contest, fans saw 45 dunks total.

In 2000, there were 6 competitors. 3 players advanced and did two dunks in the final round. There were 24 dunks total.

Now the NBA cut it down to 4 competitors, only 2 dunks per round, meaning fans will only see a total of about 12 dunks.

Besides that, they fail to get LeBron, Wade or even a younger player like Durant to show up.

It seems they only manage one star, in the past few years it was Howard, now it's Griffin and not much competition for them. Sure Howard lost one year, but if Griffin had a dunk showdown with Durant and LeBron, the ratings for the event would be off the charts.

It's become a complete sham of what it once was, because of the NBA's careless of the contest. The NBA picked role players Serge Ibaka and Javale McGee to compete, players casual NBA fans probably never heard of. Brandon Jennings is a bit taller than Allen Iverson. It's Blake Griffin, a point guard and two role players.

Nah it's like coke. After you've had the same stuff over a period of time, it doesn't do it anymore. Everyone's looking for things they've never seen before and there's only so much that guys can do. Cutting down the number of dunks reduces the risks (cuz there's still 40 games left and those tickets need to be sold) and keeps the high up longer cuz there will still be something for next year. Think about all the gimmicks guys are pulling out now cuz there isn't that much that you can do that folks haven't seen before.

The contest this year is a waste, I'll only see Blake.

Why not ask all players if they want to participate in the Dunk Contest and make a list, so the fans vote for the players they want to see, and everyone is happy.
