Top 5 players to start the new franchise today? Which guys would you take 1, 2, 3, 4, 5?

For me, I base it off of Age, how many more years of prime in the league, if the player would stay with the franchise or not, etc.

1. Dwight
2. Durant
3. Lebron
4. Blake
5. Rose

This could change if Dwight or Durant leave their franchises as well.

He is a facilitator, so you now have no choice but to add scorers around him, which is much harder to do than you think. Look at Kidd in the early 2000's. You couldn't build around him. He was the ULTIMATE compliment to any team with talent, but you can't start with a player like Rondo/Kidd/Rubio as player 1. It puts too much pressure on the construction process.

Agreed. Rondo relies heavily on the guys around him. He needs top scorers and weapons around him for the team to be successful.

its not just that. you can't START with a guy whose strength is facilitating. That is redundant. You have to start with guys who can flat out score with efficiency and dominate games in all ways.

I don't care if Wade is 29. He's my favorite player of all time, and I'd still pick him over anybody to start a franchise (translation I'm a homer). Thats a fan's perspective. If I'm an unbiased GM, I'm going with Lebron or Dwight.

1. Wade (homer)
2. Lebron (best player in the world, and he just turned 26)
3. Dwight (Head & shoulders above any other big in the L, and he's still young)
4. Blake (I'm on the bandwagon)
5. Rose/Durant (both solid choices. freakishly young, yet still top 10 players RIGHT NOW)

This makes this hypothetical thread worthless. LeBron is the most senior player among the possible candidates here so he had the chance to leave before everyone. How on earth would you know Dwight, Durant, Blake, CP3, Deron, Rondo, Rose won't leave if they don't win a championship after 7 years? When I read that condition at the beginning I had a sense that this thread is made to see how many people choose Rose here since there are plenty of threads being made with chance of having Rose as answer.

Guys like Rose, Griffin, Westbrook, Rondo, Deron are great players no doubt. But assuming equal talent distributed amongst franchises, these guys will always be 3rd-6th seed leaders. My top 5 are reasonably young and will all be in the top 6 players for years to come.

Griffin would be high on my list, probably 3rd, if he didn't already have a season ending knee surgery under his belt. Rose would also probably be 4th over Deron if I wasn't at least somewhat worried that his style of play will lead to more injuries and/or a quicker breakdown than Williams.

Honorable mentions to:
Griffin (see above)
Rondo (poor shooting, especially FT, hold him back in the clutch)
Westbrook (could argue over Williams or Rose, but I have him 3rd)
Melo (off-court drama, lacks winning intangibles IMO)
Evan Turner (just seeing if you were still paying attention...)

Im really surprised so many ppl are putting Blake Griffin. Yes, his numbers and highlights are impressive but none of it results in wins. The Clippers have talent on their roster (Gordon/Davis/Griffin) and they are still bottom dwelling with the Nets, Raptors & Wizards.

The five guys that I have named each have, almost no flaws to their game and what they do on the court results in wins!

Blake Griffin is in his rookie season and has played half a season....you cannot deem him a franchise player yet. Also, he is ALL OFFENSE and no defense.

Normally I'd pick the younger players at the top 2 spots, but Dwight is head and shoulders above the younger guys defensively and has improved his offense enough to be at 2 for me. LeBron is simply the best player on the planet, and I don't think a 4 year age difference warrants him being put under players he is clearly superior to.

On a side note, I think when Kyrie Irving leaves Duke (which I don't think he will this year due to the possibility of a lockout and in order to play a full season of college ball for Duke and Coach K) he will be the best PG prospect we have seen in a long time. He really seemed to be the full package of defense, speed, quickness, and shooting, while other PG prospects over the years have been missing one or more of those traits. Irving could very well be on this list in a few years.

I don't know about CP3 anymore, seems to have injuries yearly.

I definitely don't see why you would start a franchise with Rondo.

Why not? He is arguably the best PG in the league. He is young and plays great defense, which very few other do. Don't tell me he can't score. I know his jump shot is weak but he can score when he wants. His team doesn't require him the do that and thus he plays mainly as a playmaker.

Because when you start a franchise you generally want someone who can score. You aren't worried about a facilitator because more than likely you will be on one of the worst teams in the league where you will need to be making all the plays and be the focal point of the offense.

as a celtics fan when rondo needs to score he can as easily as any pg in the league. its this reason he is such a weapon is because his drive is so respected when he does he draws the d in and makes the pass to the open players

Yes he can do that at times because of all the options on the team. However when he is the clear cut best on the team and the main offensive player then things are totally different.

In that order. I think people in this thread may be overrating age here. I would much rather have 5-7 years of elite basketball with title contention over 10 years of great basketball but never contending...

Guys like Rose, Griffin, Westbrook, Rondo, Deron are great players no doubt. But assuming equal talent distributed amongst franchises, these guys will always be 3rd-6th seed leaders. My top 5 are reasonably young and will all be in the top 6 players for years to come.

Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It depends on the players around you. Before Wade managed to get Bosh and Lebron he was in the same exact seeding as those other players you mentioned. Pretty piss poor reasoning.

Anyway, I'd go

1)Lebron
2)Dwight
3)Durant
4)Rose
5)Griffin (if he can ever become a great defender, which is unlikely, he can be number #2 on this list)

1.Lebron James-the best player in the world
2.Derrick Rose-He is 22 years old I think, and this good (top 10 specifically)
3.Kevin Durant-He is also 22 and the best pure scorer in the league
4.Blake Griffin-Is only 21 and is already IMO a top 3 Clipper ever
5.John Wall-I know you will all think im crazy, but he is only 20 year old rookie and is averaging 15 points, 9 assists, and 2 steals.

i respect ur opinion...but why not rondo...would ur opinion change if he develops a decent jump shot?

If he could, he already would have... Don't ya think? It's said every year... "What if Rondo could develop a jump shot?" We could go back and forth over the same person for days but it's still just WHAT IF?

But that is of course subject to change. Howard is my number 1 guy without question and I think Westbrook deserves to be on this list for sure.

The teams are built around basically these players and see their record right now.

1 - LeBron (60-win+ team guy)
2 - Rose (ahead of Dwight/Durant; 31-14 record even with injuries)
3 - Dwight (best defensive anchor with improving offense)
4 - Durant (Best scorer)
5 - Blake Griffin.

Cannot believe some of these lists....Paul has no knee, if you stick to the 7 year premise then Wade is off.....man.

Dwight-Rose-LBJ-Durant are the top 4 by a wide margin. Then I'd go Blake, at least as a new franchise you'd put butts in the seats. I mean wins or not he has done something pretty shocking.....we talk about the Clippers
