MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Love is making a name for himself in the NBA with his breakout season for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It turns out he's been on the Denver Nuggets' radar for quite some time.

Nuggets coach George Karl said Wednesday night that the team asked Minnesota about trading for Love this summer.

"I know there were inquiries," Karl said before the Nuggets played the Timberwolves. "In some of the meetings we talked and his name was out there. It never got close, I know that."

Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony has been the subject of trade rumors for months and has rejected the team's three-year, $65 million contract extension offer. But Karl did not discuss the nature of the Love talks and did not say who, if anybody, was offered to Minnesota in return.

Obviously, no deal was done, and unless they could have received Anthony in return, that is likely a good thing for the Timberwolves.

Minnesota traded forward Al Jefferson to Utah to create more minutes for Love and he has blossomed in his third season, leading the league with 15.5 rebounds per game and averaging 20.6 points. He had 31 points and 31 rebounds in a win over the Knicks in November, the first 30-30 game in the NBA since 1982, and scored 43 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a loss at Denver on Dec. 18.

"We liked him last year when he kind of was inconsistent, up and down," Karl said. "I think we made inquiries on Kevin Love this summer, but we didn't think this. We never thought he'd make the huge step he made from last year to this year. This is incredible."

It's been rumored for weeks that Anthony wants to be traded to the New York Knicks, while the Nets and Bulls have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Anthony is in the final year of his contract, which essentially gives him veto power on any deal. If he doesn't like the proposed destination, he could refuse to sign an extension and become a free agent in the summer of 2011.

The Timberwolves are rebuilding again and entered the night with just eight wins on the season, making cold and snowy Minnesota an unattractive spot for Anthony to sign long term.

Meanwhile, Love has emerged as one of the bright young stars in the league, an affordable and marketable talent that the disillusioned Timberwolves fan base is starting to rally around.

"His knack to rebound the ball, I haven't seen it like this for a long time," Karl said. "Marcus [Camby] kind of has the knack. This guy, Dwight Howard, Marcus when he was younger, he has the knack. The ball finds him."

It's led to a debate about his All-Star credentials. The Timberwolves have the second-worst record in the Western Conference, leading some to wonder if a player from such a bad team can receive the honor, no matter how great the numbers.

"I think his numbers are impressive enough to be considered," Karl said. "But I like taking guys off the teams that win games."

I am sure multiple teams inquired about Love last summer. He was a player who most scouts/GM's thought was getting shafted on minutes, and could help their team. As Karl said, talks never went anywhere serious. I would assume that is the extent of most teams inquiry about Love.

i doubt the wolves would trade him.

Any dude who averages 15.5 Rebounds Through the first thirty-three games weather your team wins or not is special. Im seeing him as a David Lee Type of player, but if he averages 20/15 at the end of the year or just 15 Rebounds in general, He'll be much more than David Lee in my eyes.

I bet a lot of people asked about him this offseason. It was obvious he was going to continue to progress.

no. His comments were that he feels more wanted on Team USA than he did with the Wolves, and those comments came in August. Within 12 hours, he made a statement saying they were taken out of context, and that he was excited to be wanted by Team USA during the FIBA games.

Quite honestly, Love did, and deserved to, feel kind of unwanted with the Wolves. Jefferson was there, yes, but Love has been an elite rebounder and capable scorer since he stepped on an NBA floor. Every GM/Scout/Fan knew he should be getting more minutes. He was frustrated. But he is playing 36 mpg now, and knows its his team.

I do believe Kahn listened to offers for Love, but as the summer went on, with Love growing by the day with Team USA, he became a guy we didn't listen to offers for.

This got me wondering if this is why Kahn had David Lee in for FA talks. Maybe Kahn was trying to push a trade built around Love for Melo and then sign Lee? Because that made absolutely zero sense to me.

Hes not going anywhere. I don't think the Nuggets have anything that would make the T'Wolves trade him.

But to make it fun, how about this trade (used Trade Machine):

T'Wolves get: Ty Lawson, Nene and JR Smith
Nuggets get: Kevin Love, Luke Ridnour, Telfair

That has nothing to do with this. Kahn should know that already.

If Kahn trades him, he should be fired, period.

Fun for who? We gave them Lawson for next to nothing. Not interested in Nene or Jr Smith!!!!!! Just for fun not attacking you but still!

as Lawson showed the other night, he is far better than Flynn. Nene is actually playing the best ball of any center in the west, and Smith is streaky, but pretty good. While it wouldn't work for us unless we made Beasley a full time PF, its still not that bad of a trade.
But trading Love now would be a bad decision, unless you are getting another potential all star under the age of 24

Klove wont got anywhere. He see's what Minnesota is doing. Seams like the team is starting to gel more, we rarely get blown out anymore, most of our losses are in the 4th quarter just drop off, we are a young team, we will figure it out.

You're basically increasing depth at every position. Nene could easily be an AS this season.

I'm talking about the offseason when their were supposedly talks of MN trying to acquire Melo, as Karl talks about the Nugs asking about Love before his breakout.

Plus, I said "package built around" meaning other parts would have been included, potentially the 4th pick.

It wouldn't make sense to trade Love now that he's playing the best basketball of his young career. And for the T'Wolves, who knows if Anthony would sign an extension and play out the next majority of his career in Minny? Why trade Love (who is much more of a sure thing to stick around in Minny than 'Melo is) for the possibility of ending up with nothing?
