During the Lakers trip to Washington to meet the President, Obama gave a speech congratulating the LA Lakers while still showing his roots with the Chicago Bulls.

"Congratulations to Phil Jackson for winning his 11th ring, and 5th with the Lakers," said Obama while adding, "I want to remind Phil that it's still 1 less ring than the 6 rings he won with Chicago."

Seconds later, a voice among the Lakers player interjected. "Oh huh? Kobe said 'Not for long'," Obama said smiling.

Later, Obama fired a friendly shot to Kobe after the Lakers vs Bulls game the night before.

"Seems like Derrick Rose has your number," Obama said.

Bryant fired a friendly shot right back. "Well, if he calls that number," Bryant told the president, "I'll be sure to pick it up after the fifth ring."

I don't think Obama has to do much to "seem" hip, everyone knows he *is* hip. I'm not against criticizing the man but when it comes to coolness, I have to hand it to him, he's our coolest president since Clinton and Kennedy

kilgore2345

Sounds like a PR move to seem hip to younger voters.

Hardly a PR move, he loves basketball.

First, I seriously doubt that any young voters find him "hip" because he plays basketball. Most young voters found him more inspirational in 2008 than the rest of field; primaries and general election alike. He also had the benefit of being practically the youngest candidate in the race, which in contrary to Hillary Clinton and John McCain, made him more identifiable with young voters. I know generally that his poll numbers are down in comparison to his pre-election numbers, but I would say that it is a safe assumption that he is still popular with 18-30 year olds.

For the record, about him not being a true fan or whatever. He played basketball in high school, played in a pick-up league when he was in the Illinois Senate, US Senate, and plays regular basketball games. Granted, he might not be a hardcore NBA nerd, but he does know something about the league and has demonstrated some acumen about it. Just because he is a politician does not mean he doesn't truly enjoy the sport.

 I love it! Great comeback. I'm actually starting to like Kobe. He seems to be one of the few players in the league who only cares about winning and not making friends. When it comes to playing ball, he doesn't care about anything else. He's real! Check out what he said about Rose.

http://blogs.bulls.com/2010/12/bryant-roses-killer-instinct-gives-him-an-edge/

So does Bryant feel that the Bulls’ Rose is among those who could step into his shoes—the proverbial passing of the torch?

“Oh sure, [but] I’m not passing [expletive],” said Bryant.

Does that mean Rose has to come take it, Bryant was asked?

“He can certainly try,” said Bryant.

You have to respect that.
