I'm hearing that Matsui and #Athletics could be close to an agreement. Working to confirm ...

ROFL!

I think Hideki should sign with the Mariners and put on his jersey Gojira instead of Matsui

Good move for OAK if they want to compete. This is a guy that produces winning ABs. Move runners over, sacrafice flies, RBI groundouts, works pithers, etc.

This could actually be a decent pickup. Oakland needs some pop in the lineup like no other.

Not a bad idea for Oakland, Matsui is definitely a quality hitter.

He should be strictly DH at this point. A's already have DeJesus, Crisp, Sweeney, and CoJack in the OF.

he can kiss his power goodbye.

Oakland will like Matsui. I know he's had injuries, but this guy is so clutch. One of the main reasons the Yankees won the World Series two years ago.

Good luck with him. Great player and great perspective on baseball all together. This guys is the Japanese version of Derek Jeter and knows how to win. It's a shame he wasn't able to retire a Yankee, but he will be always remembered as one.

Bad news for those other DH-type players. Ramirez, Thome, Ordonez, Guerrero etc. Thats one less team looking for those type of players.

If they get him for 5M, it's a great pickup.

He easily replaces Jack Cust with a lot less strikeouts. I like this deal for Oakland.

He should put more fans in the seat. Infinitely better cleanup batter than ... Daric Barton?

i though billy beane hated home runs and offense and what not. very counter productive to the oakland A's recent philosophy........

He doesn't hate offense, it just got in the way of their main priority... losing.

Maybe but I dont know, I think bonds himself couldn't have put fans in the seats.

Also Barton, isn't a cleanup hitter, atleast shouldn't be.

He shouldn't be, I agree but thats where he was at times.

I didn't remember that so I went and looked. He didn't bat cleanup at all in 2010, and only 5 times in the 3 spot. In 09 he batted twice in the cleanup.

Most of his bats last year came batting 2nd, which I like him at.

Good DH pick-up!

The Oakland A's are slowly getting better on the offensive end. Those bats can actually help out that awesome pitching force in the near future.

so long as Matsui does not bring a glove to Oakland with him, this could be completely solid for the A's.

Great for Matsui, wish Godzilla the best!

good pickup..a's still need a lot of offensive help though

Cheez, being as how I'm curious and your the only A's fan I know of on here, as of right now, what's the A's projected lineup?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mastusi's power numbers decrease if he signs with Oakland. That's one huge collesium HR hitters don't thrive in. He'd be lucky to hit 15+ HR's in there.

I would say something like this:

Crisp
Barton
DeJesus
Matsui
Kouzmanoff
Suzuki
Ellis
Sweeney/Jackson/Carter
Pennington

What's Kouzamanoff's contract status? Did they offer arbitration?

They tendered him a contract for a slight raise from his 3.1 million last season.

Good pickup, considering NO ONE wants to go to Oakland and hit. Jim Thome told them no before they even asked.

Why does Chris Carter seem like an afterthought? What happened to him?

brandonwarne52

Isn't he in the mix to play in the OF there? I don't think they want to hand him a job.

VRP723
12-14-2010, 12:33 AM
Well I was reading the A's forum this afternoon and it seems as though they don't value him very highly, and now Cheez has him competing for a job with Conor Jackson. Seems weird.

brandonwarne52
12-14-2010, 12:36 AM
I think they just want him to compete; he certainly didn't perform like a player that deserves to be handed a starting job, even if he's got a very bright future.

VRP723
12-14-2010, 12:41 AM
From an organizational standpoint I see your point, but usually fans are quick to anoint prospects as studs, see the MLB Forum in April after Heyward's HR. Maybe A's fans are just more rational

We were really excited about Carter, but that 0-30 something streak to start out really turned a lot of fans off. I still love the guy and want him to get a lot AB's, but I'm not comfortable going into the season with him slated in as the DH with no other legitimate options.

No, it's all about competition. We're going to make him work for the job out of ST. If not, he'll find his *** back in AAA. Plus, he did hit over .350 and showed some pop after that slow start out the gate.

very underrated move...adds some pop

still need a bit more, but if they do i can def see them competing for the west this year

Cheezombie

Mostly because we're afraid of giving Carter a job in the field. He's pretty much terrible defensively, and is a future DH. He's also gonna need some experience to be a force offensively, so I'm thinking that'll probably come with injuries.
