View Full Version : What 3 guys would you start a Franchise with?

The_Jamal
12-12-2010, 07:16 PM
Title says it all, if you're starting a brand new team and could take any 3 players in the game today, who would they be and why? Money is not a factor

My picks:

Tim Lincecum SP- He's on the list of two pitchers (King Felix) who I would take to anchor a teams pitching for the next 10 years.

Joe Mauer C- No brainer here, best Catcher in the game and would do wonders with a staff that would likely be very weak for the most part. Not to mention his bat would anchor the lineup for many years.

Carlos Gonzalez CF- Perhaps a bit of a surprise pick here, but a young stud 5-tool CF doesn't come around all that often. He does everything well and is one of the most exciting players in the game to watch. He and Mauer would make a lethal 3-4 and would be able to carry an offense by themselves.

Who are your picks?

I don't see the appeal of Mauer. Great player at a premium position, sure. But he's 27, which in catching years is closer to 30, and whenever he does move out from behind the plate, he loses a massive chunk of his value (in fantasy or reality). I'd skip the C spot altogether.

I'm going to break this down kinda like Jilly....the 3 guys I'd choose if money matters, and the 3 guys if it doesn't.

Longoria, Heyward, Stanton for the inexpensive group.

Pujols, Miggy, Hanley (this would obviously need to be for an AL team) for the deep pockets group.

The human body has limits to what it can do and stay in tact. I hope this is not the case with him but I fear that he throws too hard for the body to handle long term. He made need to readjust his entire mechanics and take some speed off the ball to hold up long term in MLB.

if you want to build a franchise with any 3 guys, then it should be a SP, IF, and an OF with all being in their mid 20's:

Lincecum -26- He can do it all ERA, SO, Wins, WHIP
Carlos Gonzalez -25- Has power and a high OPS
Hanley Ramirez -26- Has speed and power 30-30 threat

1B and 3B are deep in talent, the SS and 2B positions are always tough to fill with a player who has power and speed, so these would be my choices

So I still have a great bat and dangerous hitter....darn my luck

As pointed out elsewhere though, if Mauer is forced to move positions (which will happen soon), you are left with a solid bat that is much less talented than many other options.

If the theory is that catcher is important, why not take Posey, who showed he can handle a dominant staff very well and is much younger and offers much more longevity at catcher. Just a thought mind you. I wouldn't take either of them if starting a team.

I go Pujols, Felix, and Lincecum.

Honestly, if Mauer moved to first base he would still be an elite player at his position.
Career .327 .407 .481. Without a doubt his slugging% leaves a lot to be desired
but he is arguably the best hitter for average in the game. His production is liable to increase after you remove the strain of full time catching duties.
Are there better first basemen to build a franchise around? sure, but as of right now he is a catcher, and one that at age 28 has plenty of ball to play still.

I was thinking that way, and I had Felix, Linc and Stras. Then I realized that both of 'em are probably gonna get injured, and I remembered that starters are more of an injury-risk. It's why going all-in with starters is a bad idea.

Strasburg would be on this list if you didn't lose a year of him due to surgery. FWIW:

4. Tulo (could be #3, but numbers are Coors-inflated)
5. Kershaw (dude's finally controlling his ridiculous stuff, oh and he's 22)
6. Posey (does it all as a catcher)

Notable omissions: Mauer (injury history), Tim (mechanics), Stras (surgery), Heyward (has proved NOTHING yet), Cargo (Coors-factor), Votto & Pujols (replaceable at 1B), Longoria (down season)

1. Joe Mauer
2. Felix
3. (healthy) Jose Reyes
