View Full Version : Are the Knicks a playoff team ??

4real
12-05-2010, 04:35 PM
The Knicks are 12-9, 9-1 their last 10 games, the best shot blocking team in the NBA, on a 7 game winning streak on the road, and the best road team in the league. Also the last couple of games, Amare has been averaging 30 and 11. So if they continue to play like this, are they a playoff team ??

some might say this... but the fact is they've played 7 back to backs (most in the nba) and 13 games on the road. thats a tough schedule no matter what teams you are playing.

Yeah it took some insane 3's to win against us. Wins a win though. All I'm saying is you guys have the easiest schedule in the NBA and it WILL get tougher to even things out. Lets talk then about the Knicks making the playoffs

madiaz3
12-05-2010, 05:28 PM
Part of being a playoff team is that they have to beat the teams they are supposed to beat, and so far, they've been doing that job.

Being in the playoffs may be downplayed by playing in the east but considering our past few seasons of being considered a laughing-stock, it's a big step, especially because signs only point to our team becoming even better in just as soon as a year.

Now back on topic, the Knicks have done a good job taking advantage of their early schedule, which ends Dec 10 against the Wizards. After that starts a stretch where they play the best teams in the league for the rest of this month and through January. We'll find out how they stack up after that stretch.

I'm not convinced yet. Let's revisit this thread at the end of December and see where they are. In their last 11 games, they have only played against a whopping 2 teams that are above .500, with a combined record of 76-122. Their last 8 games of December are against Denver, Boston, Miami, Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Chicago, Miami and Orlando. Then we will see what they are truly made of.

its not realistic that the Knicks will beat either of those teams. as a Knicks fan, i'd be happy just to see competitive ball. we'll make it to the playoffs beating the bottom feeders in the east and the occasional upset. i'm fine with that.

airronijordan
12-05-2010, 07:20 PM
If Amare keeps playing like this, then the Knicks can compete with any team......yes the Knicks have had an easy schedule but they only lost by 4 to the Celtics earlier in the year and we were very close to beating a Portland team earlier in the season, not to mention we also lost Denver by 2....We just beat a really good New Orleans team...so we can stay competitive against the good teams....I think we're the 5th best team in the East now (Bos, Orl, Mia, Chi, NY)

They had a pretty easy schedule so far. They might end up like the 8-11 Warriors- easy schedule inflated their record (they were 4-0 to start the season), but down the stretch when they faced tough teams, the record balances out.

The Knicks had a decent showing, you can't argue that, but if they really want to surprise people and make it to the playoffs their players need to stay consistent.

Landry Fields is one hell of a player.

Beat Chicago/New Orleans at their home
Lost to Boston/Portland/Denver for a combined 11 for all 3 games.
Beat the teams we are suppose to beat.

Can't really ask for much else.
Some people make it seem like we haven't beat any good teams or got blown out by playoff teams...

The game we lost to Portland was a pure fail. We had a 10 point lead with like 5 minutes left.

I'd chalk that up to early chemistry issues.

But like others have mentioned, if we can put up a good showing against the elite teams coming up, then we'd rightfully earn some respect.

They have had the easiest schedule so far...i doubt they keep this pace up, they will probably into that 8th spot.

Obviously they won't keep winning 8-9 out of every 10 like they have just done and with tougher games they will face some bumps in the road. However, to me the biggest obstacles for this team to overcome were Felton-Amar'e building chemistry, Gallo developing as more than just a shooter, and Chandler becoming a consistent threat. All 3 of those things happened and Landry Fields came out of nowhere to be the perfect glue guy. In the east it really is a no brainer to me. I mean I haven't checked the standings today but have the Celtics clinched the playoffs yet?

as I say in every thread where team "A" from the east could be a playoff team:

It will take maybe 38 wins to make the playoffs out east. There will be numerous teams in it towards the end of the season, and whomever sucks the least will be the sacrificial lamb to Boston or Orlando.

In all reality, the Knicks could secure a 5-6 seed, and be an upset situation depending

OKC won 50 games in the west and they have durant and westbrook...knicks fans need to be more realistic, getting to the first round and winning a game or 2 seem like more realistic goals, than pushing it to a game 7 in the semis.

Yeah they maybe against the worst teams, but they clearly shown they are better then what they were projected to be.. Since Lebron left Cleveland it opened up basically 4 spots for any team in the east to take.. Knicks are better then the bottom half of the conference they have a legit shot at taking the 5th seed away from Atlanta

Don't think Knicks have the easiest schedule in the NBA?

The 20-game caveat is that the Knicks have played the N.B.A.ís easiest schedule, based on opponentsí winning percentage (.392), according to ESPNís John Hollinger. But the caveat to the caveat is that they have played 12 games on the road (going 8-4) and seven back-to-back sets.

Absolutely a playoff team barring significant injuries to Amar'e or Felton. With the way the Hawks are playing and now not having Joe Johnson for a bit the knicks could conceivably be a 5 seed this year and be matched up against Chicago in the first round, a matchup they could very well win (they'd still be under dogs, but it wouldn't be a huge upset by any means). We have about a 1 percent chance of making it past the 2nd round, but dam that's a hell of an improvement over the past decade of being one of the laughingstocks of the league.

As for their schedule, it's a mixed bag there. Easy teams yes, but a ton of road games and back to backs. Still a bit on the easy side. But, with them having so many new players trying to develop chemistry on the court having a good start is huge for this team. The Felton and Amar'e 2 man game is becoming very effective on a regular basis, add in that they still don't have Azubuike back yet (which would mean the end of Bill Walker sightings) as well as a possible trade for Melo and this team looks legit this season.

Division leaders have to be in the top four, not the top three. For example, right now the Bulls are only 10-8 but are leading their division, yet are #4 in the conference because Boston, Orlando, and Atlanta have better records (Miami and New York do, too, but Chicago has to be in the top four because they are leading their divison.

Even with the tough schedule coming up you guys do realize the 9th seed in the NBA is currently 7-13 right? Assuming the 9th seed improves and plays .500 ball (probably wont) for the next 20 games, the Knicks can win only 5 of their next 20 and still remain in the playoffs. Considering the fact that they have been abusing the teams directly below the playoff cut-off I would have to say they have a pretty good chance of remaining in the playoffs even if they do go through a rough stretch.

Yea its really too early to tell. But even before the preseason started I said in the Knicks forum that the Knicks are a playoff team especially in the East no doubt about it IMO. They have the talent its only a matter of building their chemistry together since there's 12 new players on the team from last year and being more consistent, not making so many mental errors. And they're really playing great basketball right now. Im finally proud 2 be a knicks fan again after the past 10 dismal years and the future is as bright as any team in this league going forward and I dont care what all the haters say the Knicks will win a title in the next 5 years

Yeah it took some insane 3's to win against us. Wins a win though. All I'm saying is you guys have the easiest schedule in the NBA and it WILL get tougher to even things out. Lets talk then about the Knicks making the playoffs

When we played u guys we didn't even play as a team yet we are a much better team and the next time u play the knicks u will see that. Last time we played all u saw was Felton trying to make plays now that ball moves, we spread the floor attack and get to the line like good teams do so get ready for a battle. On top of that Felton is playing like a beast and outplayed CP3 when he matched up with him! So if he can dispose of CP3, Rose better be ready to battle next time around. What makes it worse is that even if Rose is giving it to Felton all we have to do is bring TD in. So the Bulls aren't gonna have fun playing the Knicks anymore and get ready for that! This year the series will be split 2-2 or 3-1 our way this is not the Knicks from last year and you will notice that u just better hope u don't face us in the firstround! Yes we are a playoff team by the way we have the talent and on top of that we might just improve by the trade line and then the league really better watch out

I think the Knicks end up somewhere between the 6th or 8th seed. But to answer the original question, I think most everyone would have to say yes at this point. They are winning the games that they should win, which is all you can ask of a team. They have enough talent to beat some of the really good teams, but I don't think they will keep this type of high level play up once they start going up against the likes of Miami, Orlando, Boston and some of the western power houses.

Good for them though. They are fun to watch and are finally starting to look like a team. Felton and Amar'e have been playing great basketball and their supporting cast is doing exactly what they are supposed to do. Even Gallinari hit a clutch 3 last night... granted, it was against the T'Wolves. But, as they say, a win is a win. They all count the same.

They could challenge ATL for the 5th seed, ATL had a really easy early schedule as well that allowed them to start 6-0, but they have come back down to earth. Overall I think 6th seed is most likely, but 5th is attainable and at worst probably 7th.

NY is 10-1 after the slow start, easy schedule or not thats pretty impressive. Not to mention they blew some tough games early in the season when they were adjusting to new players

10 point lead with 5 min left against POR, lost
21 point 3rd quarter lead against MIN - lost
11 point 3rd quarter lead against PHI - lost

They also had a 2 point lead at home against GSW with about 2 mins and lost, and were tied in DEN with 1 minute and the ball and lost.

Point being this team has played ALL teams well, not just the bad teams, they won in CHI & NO and played well against POR & BOS.

NY could easily be 16-6 right now.

The bolded part is crazy to think about. They should have absolutely won at least 2 out of those 3 games. I agree with you and I seemed to have forgot about some of those close ones that they just couldn't pull out at the end.

What??? Who would have thunk that??? The Knicks don't play no defense??? I hope they are a playoff team, will be disappointed if they don't make it. The season is to long and the Knicks are trying to find an identity so I just don't know if they are or not?

I think it will ultimately look like this:

Magic
Celtics
Heat
Bulls/Hawks
Bulls/Hawks
Knicks
Pacers/Bucks/Bobcats

The Bulls will be 4, not saying that theyre better than the hawks by any mean, its just they will be a division winner
