D'Antoni, Stoudemire becoming 'D' best of friends

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni appeared annoyed yesterday when asked about a quotation by Amar'e Stoudemire in which he praised his former Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry for his defensive improvement and added he wasn't taught defense his first few years in the NBA.

Stoudemire was coached during his first 4 seasons by D'Antoni. When asked why he hasn't been known for his defense, Stoudemire said in Charlotte: "I was just never taught it, through high school, and I also think in the NBA. I think last year I watched a lot of film and took it upon myself to be better. I got to give it to [Suns coach] Alvin Gentry. He implemented some strategies that were helpful for me. I just took it and learned from that and carried it over to this season." D'Antoni seemed to acknowledge the worst-kept secret he and Stoudemire weren't always BFFs in Phoenix.

"I'm not even going to go there," D'Antoni said. "I'll just let it go. Not even going to go there. I'm not running for political office, so there are skeletons in my closet. I know we're on same page today. We'll be on the same page tomorrow. And you guys can write all the negative stuff you want. I'm not falling into that trap. It's literally non-news."

You don't think its newsworthy that he basically said Mike didn't teach him any defense and pretty much said what he's doing now he learned from Gentry? Really? Especially when their relationship has been questioned and he's their multimillion investment? In the least its a very immature statement, especially if you look at the context of the situation.

He could've gave Gentry his props without downing Mike.....

did Mike teach him defense? nope. And Mike's response was, "who cares"

Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire says that he was never taught defense.

Stoudemire says defense is more a priority now for him than ever before in his career.

"When trying to win ball games, defense is what does it," Stoudemire said. "Getting stops, getting rebounds ... it's imperative for me to bring that defensive intensity."

Stoudemire doesn't argue that his reputation as a poor defensive player was well deserved in Phoenix and seemed to suggest that former Suns and current Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was indirectly responsible.

"It was fair," Stoudemire said. "I was never taught defense. I just never was taught it in high school and also in the NBA."

Yeah, at least he's honest. That really is a lame excuse though. I'm sure growing up people taught him how to play defense. Defense all comes down to effort and it seems to me that he's not willing to put in the effort that's necessary to be a good defender.

He's all talk. He's had more than a couple head coaches to help him with D and none succeeded. He always says he's willing to learn. He's maxed out on that end.

I believe Amare. I mean think about it, the guy has always been very gifted offensively, so most of his coaches probably focused mostly on that. He has the body to be a good defensive player, it's not like he couldnt learn, but it makes sense that his coaches didnt put much emphasis there. It just wasnt his game.

Well it's probably true, D'antoni is a horrible coach, he basically teaches them NOT to play defense, let them score go down take a quick three and if it misses rebound it and take another three

Defense is definitely not all effort. There are complex defensive schemes. D'Antoni doesn't focus on defense; never has. There is certainly A LOT to learn about defense; both individual and especially team defense.

Anyone saying knowing how to play defense is like learning to walk simply misunderstands. Sure, he could certainly try harder, but there are many intricacies to learn.

A lot of it is effort, for sure...and he could show more of it, but again, a good coach can do wonders in terms of teaching people and teams how to defend.

Stupid excuse for him...but viable. He shouldn't be off the hook at all, but he's definitely missed out on some things for sure.

******** excuse. I know some of the Suns coaches have tried. It's all on him -- it's his effort. Sure, you can pick up tips, but defense isn't something that you teach.

He wasn't lying about it being more important this season...;

been playing seriously improved man defense compared to what we're used to, don't think we've ever seen so many multi-block games out of him. He had 6 the other night.

I have watched multiple Knicks games this year, and he has not improved at all. Blocks dont equal good defence, or else in 08 when he averaged above 2 he would have been known as a good defender.

this is comical coming from one of the two weakest and worst defensive "superstar" power fowards in the league.

amare has never played defense, he has not heart to, or even the heart to average 10+ rebounds a game.

dude should shut up

So why doesn't amare take the initiative and learn how to defend by hiring a defender specialist? He did get paid and 20 mill a year he should be able to hire someone.

Didn't you read the last line, he took what he got fron Gentry and applied it for today and after.

His defense isn't great but it's not as non-existent as Lee's was, hell Amar'e won the game for us with his D against the Bobcats.

He is helping the team leading the league in blocks with an average of 2.1 so far better than his career which is 1.4

How preposterous is the notion that even his high school coach didn't teach him D? So when Coach was going through defensive drills with the team did he say "Amare, please step outside the gym, this part isn't for you. You can come back when we go over dunking and silly fouls."
