View Full Version : Shaquille O'Neal: C’s are ‘best team i’ve been on’

http://greenstreet.weei.com/sports/boston/basketball/celtics/2010/11/25/shaquille-oneal-cs-are-best-team-ive-been-on/

"This is a great team. The best team I’ve been on. They’ve got a lot of weapons on this team, so on any given night anybody can be the leading scorer. The team’s very unselfish, so the shots are going to drop off and they easily could have shot them and did that but…great game. Great team effort. And now we’ve just got to keep it going.”

Best team O’Neal has ever played on? Even better than those three NBA title teams in the early 2000s and the 2006 Miami Heat?

“Yes. Best team,” O’Neal repeated. “As far as players….as far as guys being really close…I know we’ve only been at this for two months, but hopefully the outcome to be a good one.”

There's a lot of truth to this statement.

Best right now... through 2 months. And the ironic part is that Shaq might have forgotten just how dominant he was, because those Laker squads absolutely crushed with him at the helm. But that said, as an actual team?. He might be telling the truth. They really do have threats up and down that lineup; there's virtually no holes there besides old age and the potential for injury.

Shaq on Kobe:
Shaq 2008: Kobe can't do without me
Shaq 2009: Kobe's the best player in the league, I've been saying it for years

Shaq on Cleveland:
Shaq 2009-10: We're a good team and we can go as far as Lebron can take us
Shaq 2010-11: How did they expect us to win when guys who can't even play (Mo Will) were taking 20 shots a game and I'm playing 15mins

Bla bla bla... This is nothing new.

What's sad is people are going to take this seriously and be offended he can say that after playing with the Laker squads and with Wade.

Regular Season 1999-2000 Lakers (67-15) and Post Season Repeat 2001 Lakers (15-1) have something to say about that.

You're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying that this team is more capable of winning than Shaq on the Lakers in his prime, but as a fully constructed, well rounded and dynamic TEAM (also, from a locker room standpoint, which is what he's alluding to also), this could very well be the best he's been on.

But again, Shaq's words literally have no gravity at this point. He's been too hypocritical and crossed too many teammates for them to mean anything.

From top to bottom. Those 3peat teams were very deep. But from a locker room standpoint then it might be a little different.

I dont know why people never understand what Shaq means when he says these things. When you talk about the best teams you yourself have been a part of, arent you speaking about the unit aside from yourself? Shaq joined a contender without him, the Lakers without Shaq were lottery bound.

I'll agree with him on one thing, on any given night a number of guys on this roster can have the big night and lead them to victory. I beleive Shaq led the team the other night against the Nets. However, he praises any current situation he is in at the moment. Nothing new. Every superstar he plays with was the greatest player in the game acording to him.

JasonJohnHorn
11-26-2010, 06:40 PM
Shaq said the same thing when he came to Cleveland. But... this may be accurate. This Boston squad has a current or former all-star at EVERY position! The have arguably the best defensive PF and PG in the league, one of the best defensive SF, and a trio of big bodies who can bang with anybody, and above average defends @ C in Perkins and O'Neal, plus they got guys like Robinson coming off the benhc, whose enregy can really provide a spark for his team (even though he sometimes lacks on D due to his size- but not his work ethic- at least since he got to Boston).

When Shaq was in LA, it was Shaq/Kobe (and a Kobe who in my opinion is not as good as the Kobe of today), and then other guys, roll players essentially, like Rice (who was an all-star) Horry, Fisher, Fox, George, Grant, Shaw, Harper. Outside of Rice, who was insane from DT, none of those other role players could even hope to match up with Boston's current Roster.

Shaq and Kobe 00-02 vs Boston 2010. The old Shaq and Kobe would be the best players on the court, but this Boston team would just have too many weapons. Just look at what happened to that LA team with Malone and Payton vs. Detroit, who had players that were individually as good, but as a team dominated not just an All-Star team, but a HOF team!

Yeah I was only talking about the +2000-02 era Lakers though it probably spans longer than that. The 2000 Lakers were deep, but without context its a meaningless statement. A team that has a star and bums behind him will get more from that position than a team thats deep at the same position. Without Shaq, that depth is meaningless.

INDEPENDENCE — There's no question the Cavaliers have talent and depth.

But center Shaquille O'Neal might be taking the propaganda to a whole new level.

"On paper, I think this is the best team I've been on," he said on Thursday after practice at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Remember, this is coming from a player with four NBA championship rings.

"On paper, we have 1 through 15 covered," he said. "That never matters. You have 82 games and the postseason to play.

"Whichever team is playing at the highest level, has all their guys healthy and have a little luck on their side, will be the team that makes it all the way. Hopefully, that's us."

Cavs coach Mike Brown said O'Neal's words pack a lot of punch.

"When the Big Fella talks, you've got to listen," he said. "He's been around a long time. His resume speaks for itself. When he says that, it's something that has to be heard."

You can argue that it is the best team he has ever been on. Even the 3peat Lakers werent as stacked as the Celtics are now. Miami wasnt and the Suns/Magic/Cavs are def out of the question.
