He was merely switching UZR with DRS to illustrate differences. They are not changing the WAR calculation.

The discrepancies fror some of the players are just ridiculous.

I'm fairly sure they use DRS for the years before UZR. Shows how reliable some of that stuff is.

They use TotalZone for the seasons UZR is unavailable (pre-2002).

the switch made Jose Bautista like a 8.1 WAR player, hahaha

How do they determine DRS? I wish there would be less discrepancies between the two metrics.

DRS uses smaller sub-zones and makes no adjustment for batter handedness or the batted ball tendencies of the pitching staff. It's also more aggressive in awarding/debiting credit on plays made or not made.

It's a mess, in my opinion. It's supposed to be runs saved above/below average, but it never sums to zero. In addition, its "HR saving catches" addition, while brilliant, isn't expressed in relative terms, so it adds to the baseline problem.

You can't really use it in metrics like WAR unless there's a baseline. We don't know what DRS' is.
