This is an old post. But they have an interesting discussion here. I'm not sure where this ended up going.

Dan Rosenbaum comes up with an estimate for potential assists:

potential assists = assists * (0.5 * points / field goals made) / teammates' true shooting percentage

I had personally never seen this.

And for those wondering, HoopStudes is Dean Oliver himself.

so it is attempting to include plays where people are fouled and plays where people miss shots... so trying to measure how often a player sets up a teammate with a pass that could lead to a score.

interesting... it gives a better idea of how often someone has the ball in their hand...

this has to be adjusted for when a player is actually on the court though... no?

and we are dealing with averages...and not actual numbers right? (for instance we are not looking at the TS% on plays that originatted with a pass from the player of interest...but rather the TS% for all plays)

seems like there might be some flaws in the logic... unless i am interpreting this wrong...
