SACRAMENTO — Troy Murphy, the Sparta-bred Delbarton grad who was acquired by the Nets over the summer, will “probably’’ be traded this season, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking.

The person requested anonymity because that person is not authorized to speak for the team.

Murphy started four games at the power forward spot this month after missing the preseason and the first three games of the regular season because of a back injury.

But in the last week, he has lost his starting job to Kris Humphries, who first started Nov. 10, when Murphy sat out a game in Cleveland because of a sore foot. Humphries played well that night, and coach Avery Johnson has kept him in the starting lineup for four straight games.

Murphy came off the bench the next game, Nov. 13, against Orlando, but did not play in Monday’s victory over the Clippers and did not dress in Wednesday’s loss to Utah.

Murphy was asked after practice Thursday at Arco Arena — where the Nets will face the Sacramento Kings Friday night — if he would welcome a trade. He evaded the question completely.

“I’m just trying to get better every day,’’ he said. “Just trying to improve every single day. Trying to improve, get better and better, (and) be a better player. Every day.’’

Humphries has averaged 9.5 points and 13 rebounds in the games he has started, and proven himself a nice complement to center Brook Lopez. And with the way rookie Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, has played (7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game), Murphy — whose name is on the NBA All-Star ballot — has been rendered expendable.

The person who said Murphy “probably will’’ be traded suggested that with Favors developing as quickly as he is, either Murphy or Humphries would likely have been traded this season.

If the Nets don’t end up trading Favors to Denver as part of a deal to get Carmelo Anthony, then the 19-year-old will likely take over as the starting power forward at some point in the second half of the season. If that happens, the team would not need Humphries and Murphy, both of whom are in the final year of their contract.

Since Murphy makes $11.9 million this season, his contract is an attractive one to teams looking to clear salary cap room next summer in an attempt to sign Anthony or any other free agents. Or, Murphy could be part of any offer to the Nuggets for Anthony. http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/11/troy_murphy_finds_himself_on_t.html

Does not surprise me, he was injured and never got into form. Avery does not seem to like him, and Murphy has not even played hte past 4 or so games, not because of injury just a coach's decision

that was unexpected. I think a lot of teams would like Troy and his expiring contract. Question is, what do the Nets want for him?

Trade him to the Blazers.
Rudy Fernandez and Joel Pryzbilla (to even out contracts) for Troy Murphy

Andre Miller/Armon Johnson/Patty Mills
Wes Matthews/
Nicolas Batum/Luke Babbit
Troy Murphy/Dante Cunnigham
LaMarcus Aldridge/Marcus Camby/Sean Marks:laugh2:

With Elliot Williams and Greg Oden out for the season, and Roy missing some time and potentially more, they need help offensively, Murphy's a beast on the boards and has a good offensive game. Him with Aldridge, Batum, Miller and Matthews is pretty good actually. They rotation could probably hold it down without Roy for awhile.

I dont understand Avery's dislike for him. He has clearly been hurt, and needs some time to get his game back. He had 11 rebounds one game and was starting to look better, but then missed a game with a foot injury. That was it. Not really sure what the deal is. The guy is a solid player.

He was still seen as a pretty good player last year...now hes been benched for Humphries? Avery must just not like this guy lol
