Before the season, general manager Rich Cho and his staff were so concerned about Roy’s knee that they conducted internal discussions to weigh the possibility of including him in trade proposals, sources said. Only, they never did.

“There’s no real hope of it improving,” one league source with direct knowledge of the medical prognosis told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. “It’s just about trying to manage it now. He’s not going to be the franchise superstar that [Portland] thought he would be. This isn’t something they consider ‘fixable.’ ”

He's on for 5 more years which is backloaded, so they can afford to keep him around another year to see how his health holds up. I think it's a bit premature to throw around trade discussions at this point, this will definitely affect the team.

He has long term health issues. It will forever linger with him. So its not premature, unload him while his value is still up and see if a team is willing to take a risk.

Aww I don't know Shakenbake.. We're always quick to throw Ray to trade option talks, I have even been guilty of that. But the guy is conditioning personified. He doesn't age. Even if for some reason he lost his hops, we'd still let him run around those 5 picks and his shot will remain perfect. That's bank money. It's tempting, but I think we need to start understanding Ray's continued value.

Would be nice to see Roy in green though.

trade him for Mathew Barnes. He can timeshare with Kobe. This will help extend Kobes career as well as Roys. Win Win situation for both, and they can win more titles together. GO LAKERS!

Lakers can throw in Sasha and Lukey Walton to make the salaries match.

jiggin
11-20-2010, 08:39 AM
that is funny because he is going to be back for the Nov. 26 game and he has been saying locally (brandon) that its something he can play with, he has been playing with...he just has to be careful about tweaking it. He also has said that portland had a very busy start to the season game wise (they had 2 extra games on the books compared to the rest of the NBA at the start of the season) and that the additional rest going back to a more normal schedule would help.

I'll take a 90% brandon roy or even a 75% brandon roy over most of the non-top-10 players in the league. The blazers don't rely on Brandon like the lakers do Koby or other teams that have 1 super star. If you look at their scoring, aldridge, batum, camby, sometimes miller and even Wesley Matthews now are scoring double digits consistently and posting double doubles. This exact situation is why the blazers stack their bench as well.

latest dr info I read on it was that it would be almost impossible, at his young age, to not have cartilage between the bones where the meniscus normally is (but has been removed on roy).

PS - B Roy wants to play now, saying its not bothering him anymore. But they are being cautious with him and I expect them to continue that going forward, as expected with a 82 million dollar man.

no one would right now. He is most likely going to need microfracture on both knees at the age of 25. Very high risk for your 85 millions dollar player.

no one is going to trade for him given the situation, but its obvious the blazers, even if discussed did not want to trade him and committed to the situation, so its a moot point.

PS - Microfracture surgery is not high risk. Its actually extremely common for athletes:

Knee microfracture surgery is a common procedure used to repair damaged knee cartilage. Cartilage is the material that helps cushion the area where bones meet in the joints. Often, athletes have this procedure.

The biggest issue is that this surgery tends to cause some "stiffness" which can cause some athletes to return, but not to their complete form pre-surgery. This is why I made the comment that I would take a 90% brandon roy over any player in the league that isn't a top 10 star. The blazers obviously thought this same thing through and came to the same conclusion, thus offering him top 15 in the league player money at 82 million max contact.

if it wasnt for the looking micor surgery that appears to be needed, as a bulls fan i would do it. his value cant be that high with this getting out, im sure other gm's had this article come across their desk.

yet again with IMO his value being low, because of this, the bulls could likely throw in a throw in and 2 picks, ours and the bobcats that is protected for years, and likely get him. this is unless a team overly pays for him in a trade. i think the bulls could afford to get him, and even if roy elects micro surgery the bulls could be just fine with out him for a year.

A Suns poster suggested a deal surrounding Richardson for Roy.

Portland only does this if they really know that Roy will never be the same player.

From the Suns side, I don't know that I'd be thrilled taking on a player with that many years left in his deal, knowing he may be the next Grant Hill / Penny Hardaway (in their "prime").

Unless we could swindle them to take Hedo as well, I don't see it making sense.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=26swd75 (this trade fails, but you add Portland's trade exception to make it work).

^^^ Just my thinking !! Yes, I am a SUNS fan, but I like Roy and always love watching the Blazers play ..

Although his knees may be incurrable, why not send him to a place with a history of helping injury ridden players and see how that goes .. who knows, may do wonders !! Hell, send Oden too and see what happens .

Suns would hopefully give up Hedo, and maybe J-Rich, but I'm assuming there would have to be at least a 3rd team involved to make the cap work, and get Portland its picks and young talent .

Now that I think of it, why not the Wiz ??
Give the Blazers an All-Star in Arenas, along with Hedo, J-Rich or Rudy to help handle the ball/score with Wall .

Anyways, really too lazy right now to work it out on the Trade Machine, but I'm sure there's some way to get it done ..

Long story short, Roy+Oden to PHX to help overcome nagging injuries and reboot (or finally start) their careers .

If I was Portland's GM, I would attempt to trade Roy for Melo.

Blazers get a better overall franchise player. Nugz get the best value they can get for Melo.

Blazers Get:
Carmelo Anthony
Chris "Birdman" Anderson

Nuggets Get:

It won't happen, but honestly, I feel bad for Portland, full of potential and promise but get nothing but disappointment in return because of health.
