Just announce it during the Bulls vs Spurs game.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5819493

Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season, the team announced Wednesday.

A news conference is scheduled for midnight ET in Portland.

Oden, 22, has been out since fracturing his left patella in a December 2009. An MRI showed damaged cartilage on the surface of his femur. The injury is unrelated to the fractured patella.

Oden underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee Sept. 13, 2007.

He holds career NBA averages of 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.43 blocked shots in 82 games over parts of two seasons from 2008-09.

Really though, let's be realistic. You don't come back from that many micro-fracture surgeries to be anywhere NEAR the potential he could've had.

If his career isn't 100% over (which I think it may be at this point; it has to be as emotionally draining as it is physically), then it is all but crushed as far as potential goes.

Would've liked to see what he was capable of as a prime player in this league. Really too bad.

Oden is still young. He should learn from Ming and guys like McGrady. Oden could easily step away from the game of basketball for a couple years to allow his body to heal and still come back to be a force in the league.

Zach Randolph is a good example too.
But I agree. He should take off the year after too and make sure he can play before returning.

this. Suns staff are amazing as opposed to the Blazers' staff. I cant even call it bad luck anymore because its too obvious and becoming a joke from Portland's side. Look what the Suns did to Shaq and Grant Hill's old ***. I'm sure Oden would fit nicely there.

FSN had a sad stat. Oden has only played in 82 regular season games in his career.

In all honesty I think that Detroit, Denver, and Phoenix are the only viable options for Oden this summer because of their staffs success rate with injured players.

As for Portland, they will forever have the label of the guys that took Bowie and Oden over Jordan and Durant sadly.

Slimsim
11-18-2010, 12:08 AM
isn't roy suffering from a knee injury as well ?

_KB24_
11-18-2010, 12:09 AM
Atleast guys like Kwame, Bowie, and Olawakandi were able to play.....

Oden is no doubt of the biggest busts of all time, I couldn't believe it then and I couldn't believe it now, Portland must be cursed for passing on MJ and Durant, both who are going to be Top 5 All-time in their positions.

Man this sucks for a guy who is only 22 years old, hope he can return some time in the future. I don't think you can call this guy a bust because he never really showed what he can do on the court. He seems like a funny guy maybe he can become a broadcaster for ESPN or TNT if he decides to call it quits.

kblo247
11-18-2010, 12:20 AM
If I'm Lakers management, I try to sign his *** for cheap this summer as well. He may never be a starter in the league again, but someone could get a decent backup (Livingston) in a low risk situation.

The Blazers need to invest some more money in there medical staff. All there big men get injured and ROy is out for the next couple games too.

People forget that Greg Oden is still 22. I think he should just take two years off, after his contract ends and do nothing but rehab and rest. When he comes back he will be new again and still young.

The guy has the worst luck...

11-18-2010, 12:49 AM
His knee has to just be all bone now with no protection... He needs to either let it fully heal and work his way back gradually or just retire because its not looking good... Anyhow this is good for my sixers... Maybe when he does come back healthy we will have a chance to buy low on him.

I don't feel sorry for this guy nor do I feel sorry for the blazers. Anyone notice the blazers are always injured. Seems like all 15 of them have something wrong with them. Do they work out? Are they doing the neccessary things to prevent injuries? Are they lifting weights? I don't think so. Seriously what other NBA team has these same problems. How many 22 and 26 year olds have chronic knee problems? (oden, roy) Portlands done, might as well try trading what they got now and start anew.....

Feel bad for the guy, his potential was unlimited if he played.

But as people said already, he needs to stay out of pro-ball for awhile, get 100% healthy and make his comeback. There isn't a team who wouldn't take a flier on him; if healthy u get a big defensive body off the bench that can play 15 mins a game at the very least.

BradyIsTheMan12

Utah

Its early and this means nothing, but really the West top 6 teams can beat anyone in the East. Boston is the only team that has looked good in the East. The Mavs beat them. It's not a matter of the possibility of beating them, per se. Any team in the NBA is capable of beating any other team any given night. But constructively speaking EAST > WEST at the moment and unfortunately there is no denying that.

This is terrible for him. Hard for me to say Portland should have taken Durant with the pick because Oden had great expectations. You just never know. A healthy Oden could have been great for this team.

Just announce it during the Bulls vs Spurs game.

isn't this his second round of microfracture? I thought microfracture was suppost to be possibly career ending?

Awful to hear. I wanted to see what this guy could do.

He isn't a bust. He has to play to be able to get that label. He only played 82 games and fought injuries the entire time. His future is not looking good at all. Portland should have chosen Durant either way. He was a guarantee and in the draft you have to take guarantees even if they aren't the NEED.

Portland's main building blocks officially have ****ed up knees, their future is now done with that...like someone else mentioned, I would sell as high as possible right now and start another re-build

no one could have predicted oden being this injury-prone. before the draft it was very much a toss up between durant and oden as the #1.

The West has always been better than the East for quite a while now and it tells by one true fact: from 99-10 the West has won 9 championships and the East has won 3 championships...case close :)

hahahaha...that never made sense for a little bit

Would you be happy with your team taking the risk of dealing Melo to Portland for an Oden and Roy package?

It is a gamble I know, but you are also gambling with the fact Melo will re-sign and your team has showed that their trainers can handle injured players (Nene, Camby, Martin).

I remember when I first joined this site there was a poster named Greg_Oden and he kept trying to convince me that Oden was going to be unstoppable. I told him what if this "can't miss" prospect misses? He said it wasn't possible.

Portland made the two worst decisions in NBA Draft history. They passed on Jordan for Bowie and they passed on Durant for Oden:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

They also passed on Dr J. in 1972

from greg oden a few months ago lol

-----
"Is there any proof that I'm a bust?" Oden said. "All there is proof of is that I have bad luck with injuries. When I was out there on the floor, I think I did pretty good for myself. I've never really had enough time to play and actually improve. I think last year at the beginning of the year I did OK, started to head down that path. Unfortunately I had an injury. But I've prepared myself all summer to be an All Star and be as healthy as I can be and I'm going to keep doing that until I'm able to do that ..."

That would be a crack deal pawn shop type moves. I'm gonna trade you a top 5 player who's proven, vs. 2 guys that COULD be all stars but are NEVER healthy. That would be a dumb trade....

Who was the 2nd overall pick again? Oh yeah... the top 5 player Kevin Durant

nbafan63
11-20-2010, 08:27 AM
He wobbles when he walks. He said its not a limp, its because his legs are different lengths. When he was young, he used to always trip and fall when he runs because one of his leg is a few inches longer than the other one. He is abnormally built.

IndiansFan337
11-20-2010, 05:09 PM
This is terrible news. I hope he keeps working hard to come back though. In the brief time that he has been on the court it has been obvious that he is a difference maker. He is still very young too.

People make jokes now about Oden and Yao never being able to play a full season. Zydrunas Ilgauskas missed 4 out of 5 years about a decade ago. Now he is a model of consistent health. It is crazy, because people were saying he should retire & just walk away from the game so that he can still walk when he's 50. But he has gone on to have an extremely successful career. Oden could still play for a decade if he works hard to come back once again.

I believe he can be a NBA starting C, even after his second microfracture surgery.

are you serious...he's 22 or 23 years old! He was on the court playing at almost 100% when he said it felt funny and they decided to do micro fracture (a common procedure).

Portland will make an offer to him and he will be a blazer next year...
