View Full Version : Re-Create 7 seconds or less...with all new players.

DreamShaker

The 7 Seconds or Less Phoenix Suns were one of the funnest, and most distinctive teams we have seen in recent history. Guys like Nash, Diaw, Amare, Marion, and Raja Bell meshed together to create a quick paced offense designed to score in bunches and force other teams to play their way. It didn't garner them any rings, but left us with memorable teams that competed at a very high level. We look at the Suns now, and they are left only with Nash, and are a pretty different team. Mike D'Antoni would obviously like to re-create this in New York, but has yet to find the right pieces to make it work.

So, just for fun, create a lineup up current NBA players ther were NOT a part of those Suns teams that could thrive in a similar offense. Some standards could be:

A quick-minded, play-making point guard who commands the offense with great decision making.

A super-athletic big man who finishes extremely well, executes the pick and roll effectively, and has a useful mid-range game.

A versatile wing player who runs the floor, defends multiple positions, is aggressive on the glass, and shoots the 3-ball.

Any and all set-shooters.

Play-making forwards.

Best PG in the league and a great Pick and Roll PG
Great spot up shooter and scorer at the 2 spot, solid defender, Dwills size makes up for OJs lack of it in the backcourt
Multi-facet wing player who can defend 3 positions, athlete who can run the break
Great PnR player with great mid range game
Top 3 finisher, good on the PnR, lack of midrange game is made up for by Lee

Combo guard who can fill it up quick
Energy big man defender who can run and play 4 and 5
Great shooter who can play 2 or 3

To say re-create a team like the SSOL Suns is incredibly difficult to do. Steve Nash, with his vision and other-wordly passing is what truly made that system work. Without a pass first PG who has traits similar to Nash it will be very difficult to replicate...

Agreed. Nash made it work, as we are seeing with the craptasticness of the Knicks this year even with two out of four of the main pieces of the SSOL Suns. I think CP3 is the guy who could fill that role the most effectively.

For me a team like:

PG: CP3
SG: Ray Allen
SF: Gerald Wallace
PF: Blake Griffin
C: Memhet Okur

Bench:
C-Brad Miller
PF-Tyrus Thomas
SF- Mike Miller
SG-Rudy Fernandez
PG- Shannon Brown

I dunno about that, they would run into problems with Love at the 5. They need a bigger center, that is why the Suns thought they had to trade for Shaq.

anyways, my team.

Steve Nash: Great shooter, facilitator and can definitely fit the tempo.
Manu: Always pushing it.
Rudy Gay: A lot of options at the 3, but for someone, I think he'd kill it in the 7OL.
Josh Smith: Can guard multiple positions, can run, can score from anywhere.
Nene: Don't expect to see him on many other lists, but hands down, he is the best fast break big man in the league. No center runs down the court like he does. He's pretty versatile on offense too.

CP3 ( do i need to explain)
Manu G ( hes a GREAT 3 point shooter AND slasher perfect for the system)
Iggy ( great slasher and freak Athlete)
Kevin Durant ( undersized 4 which is normal in system but will be dominate)
Al Horford ( true PF but will play center in the up tempo system)

the team has the players to run but the ability to shoot the 3 lights out, with manu , cp3 and durant on the perimiter it allows iggy to slash and horford to play the post.

SSOL wasn't really a system it was more of just getting players into the mindset of being aggressive offensively, if anything all it consisted of was just lots of pick and roll. The whole philosophy behind it was that the deeper you went into the shot clock the less likely you get a good shot.

That said my team would be:

Chris Paul
Ray Allen
Danny Grainger
Dirk Nowitzki
Dwight Howard

In order to have a 7 second or less team u must have players playing out of position like for a example a PF playing the Center position.

Nash -Has the experience, passes and shoots the ball pretty quick
Ellis -a quick scorer, can get to the basket in a flash
Kobe -can catch alley-oops, shoot the long range, and post up
Lebron -can grab a rebound, run down the court, and score within seconds
Pau -catch and shoot from any spot within the 3 point line and can grab offensive rebounds and score instantly

This team would score 120+ any given night and lead the league in assists and rebounds!

Can't really beat that.

Basically what you want is a point guard that can distribute and have the ability to shoot the three ball very well, Nash is still your best candidate. You want to surround that person and one other person to run the high pick and roll with, in this case Howard, with a lethal combination of three point shooters (Johnson, Durant, Nowitzki). This lineup running that system would be ridiculous to try and defend. And given the right defensive schemes wouldn't be too bad defensively.
