The Detroit Tigers are nearing a multi-year agreement with right-hander Joaquin Benoit, major-league sources told FOXSports.com.

The deal could be for as long as three years, sources say.

Benoit, 33, is one of the more intriguing arms in a deep class of relief pitchers. Signed to a minor-league deal just as spring training began, Benoit had one of the best seasons of any setup man this year, compiling a 1.34 ERA and 25 holds in 63 appearances. Benoit showed improved stuff, coming off surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

This would be a good deal for anyone that signed him.

Not bad. If he continues last years performance he will be great for the Tigers.

Can't knock that. Only problem is they may give him a year or 2 many.

Joaquin Benoit agreed with Detroit. 3 years and $16.5 millions. Benoit will earn $5.5 each year. $1 million each year in incentives.

3 yrs for a set up guy and 5.5 each year? slightly overpaying but not that much...Anyway the tigers have the money...

Tiger fans know what to expect in terms of bloated contracts. We are used to it.
Sometimes you have to overpay to get guys to come to the D. Plus there were multiple big market suitors for Benoit. We needed to get him locked own quick. Good job DD!
I love the signing. Shows other FA's Detroit is serious about winning this year.

It's a lot of money for a guy who had his career year in 2010. Is he going to set up or close?

Seems a little much, but he's always been a pretty solid reliever.

Kudos for locking up the best-non closer reliever on the market. If he plays this next season like he did this past, it'll be a good deal.

Tigers should sign Dunn next for DH. Cabrera and Dunn would be quite the 1-2 punch.

The cash seems excessive, but if he pitches like he has in his last few healthy seasons, it's more or less fair value.

Slight overpay, but it solidifies the bullpen. It's not like an extra million or two is going to cripple a franchise. Not much risk.

way too much money/years

I wonder if anyone commenting on this actually knows that Benoit was quite good as a reliever in Texas for a few years before he ran into arm trouble.

He could have held out for a potential closer's job....I think the deal is fair for both.

lil overpaid, but good for Tigers.

Overall, I think it was a solid signing. Benoit was the top non-closer available. I would have preferred a 2 yr deal, but it isn't as if it is a horrible deal money wise.

Lets face it, if the Yanks or Sox made the signing, most would sing the virtues of the deal. Tigers have a lot of green coming off the books so they can spend.

The Tigers don't have the warm climate or beuatiful downtown to offer FA. As a result, they HAVE to throw an extra million or extra year on any deal. It's reality. Good signing.

WAY too much? What did you think he would sign for? 1 yr/$750,000?

kinda surprising...but good first step since they lost Bonine. Thought they would go for someone in the field first, big surprise at Bullpen being the Tigers first priority.

Not really shocking. Zumaya is never going to pitch a full season. Perry has shown he isn't quite ready. Coke is going to the rotation. Bonine gone. Valverde struggled a bit in the 2nd half. Benoit is a solid signing and should Valverde faler, he could step in and close.

Actually quite a bit for a 33 year old who has never put up back to back good seasons.

I think it's an reach on money and years. Relievers are a dime a dozen.

Looks like it's time for a new avatar ;)

D-train derailed and Miggy has such a thicker face and body structure now

He's a good pitcher, but he's not worth 3 years/16.5

Other teams were rumored to have offered 3 year contracts for him. While the $$ are a little high, I'm sure it was what was necessary to beat the other suitors. I think RP's are high on a lot of teams list of needs this year and the market for quality arms could get thin quickly. I think the Tigers made a smart move being at the front of pack in getting a top arm.
