The Los Angeles Lakers will unveil a statue honoring Hall of Fame guard Jerry West during this season's NBA All-Star weekend, multiple sources confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com.

Los Angeles is the host city for All-Star weekend, running from Feb. 18-20.

West retired as the Lakers all-time leading scorer before Kobe Bryant eclipsed his point total of 25,192 points during the 2009-10 season. Known as "Mr. Clutch" during his playing days, West won a championship with the Lakers in 1972 and holds the distinction of being the only player in league history to be named NBA Finals MVP while playing on the losing team (1969). West was a 14-time NBA All-Star and was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996.

The statue will be the fifth to be erected at Staples Center and the third that is Lakers-related, following Wayne Gretzky, Magic Johnson, Oscar De La Hoya and broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Johnson's statue was dedicated during the last NBA All-Star Game to be played in L.A. in 2004.

Lakers executive vice president of business operations, Jeanie Buss, alluded to the statue in her new book, "Laker Girl," writing that it was her "dream" to commission another statue in time for the 2011 All-Star Game.

"Who is the next Laker deserving of the honor?" Buss writes. "Some would say Jerry West. Others would favor Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]. It's a tough choice."

The choice was Mr. Clutch.

Jerry Curls wants to be like Steinbrenner, but the only thing that the two have in common is 1) theyve a ton of money and 2) they both have the rationale of the hobos you run into on the street. He's just a wanna be. In fact LA is just a wannabe NY as a whole. I only cheer for Lakes because they come from Minneapolis where some of my family lives. But I hate this guy so much! What a dingus! This whole organization is so self rightous. Their PA announcer Lawrence Taylor always sounds like hes half asleep like the rest of Staples, as if hes above the game. Instead of giving the NBA logo the statute, how bout giving him his job back you piece of dougie! In fact, HE should be running and owning this team. And replace that PA guy hopped up on muscle relaxers with Gus Johnson, and lower ticket prices to 20-30 bucks a game, and only let in the facetime celebs in if they can name at least 5 players in Lake history. Im sick of these theatrics! just play ball!\\

Well deserved. West only played for the Lakers, while Kareem also played for the Bucks, but he should be the next.

De La Hoya is an LA icon. Especially for hispanic culture he means more to the area for boxing than any other fighter or athlete since Kobe/Magic. His appeal in LA is ridiculous. Its not surprising he has his statue out there. Google his title victories bruh.

as for West. Much deserved and long awaited. Should have been before Magic but oh well. Congrats
