I was thinking about this while playing the Jordan Challenge, the proverbial breakout game. The moment a player provides a glimpse of the dominance soon to come. Depending on the person that game could have been a regular season outing as a teen or a Finals game. For MJ it was the Boston Massacre, what would it be for Shaq, Duncan, Kidd, AI, Vince, etc....

For Kobe, I have 3 suggestions;

Vs MJ (Very young Kobe holds his own against the Legend)
vs Pacers in the Finals (Kind of weak but he did carry the team when Shaq fouled out)
Vs Trailblazers (Oop to Shaq and everything)

uh.... I dont know..... I mean it depends what year you mean. 96, not really, he had a descent game in 97 against the bulls but jordan didnt have to play to much that game cause they were winning pretty big. 98 he did do better, I believed he scored like 20 points or something. Kobe though was that guy when he was coming out of high school everyone was comparing to jordan, just like they did jerry stackhouse and grant hill before that. Kobe didnt start to really break out till 99-00 season when shaq was entering his prime and the lakers won the first championship that year.

kobe in the 98 all star game led the west in points. that all star game was pretty hyped up because of the match up with jordan and kobe. kobe held his own for the most part but of course jordan came out on top

for some reason Kevin Durants ascension into stardom came in the playoffs against the lakers. ironically he posted some of his worst shoooting performances of the year that series while Artest was guarding him.

For Hakeem it was probably Game 5 of the WCF in 1986.
For Shaq, it would have to be a series in 1995.
For Duncan it was probably the 1998 WCSF against the Jazz

How about his performance vs Penny when he bailed Shaq out in his first game back in Orlando? What game that championship year?

Johnny Flynn, 6OT game against uconn. without this game it's possible flynn would still be at CUSE, or a late second round pick at best.

For wade it was the shot in the playofs against Baron Davis to win the game/series in his rookie year. After that shot you knew he was going to be special. The HEAT immediately went out and got Shaq and they had a good two yer run together

kobe- when he air balled the shot against Utah in the playoffs.

after that all he did was work like hes never worked before. hes developed a work ethic athletes in every sport model. and i think that was one of the turning points in his career.

Still remember to this day his crossover and tear drop against the Hornets. I was harsh on the Miami bandwagon that year......Have times changed or what

I really don't think some people understand what wade has done in his career. I'll always respect/love that guy despite some of his ignorant fans.

I think that might of been the 97 season cause 96 I remember watching the game and nick anderson game timed the lakers and they held shaq out of that game cause they thought there was going to be a riot in orlando. 97 I dont remember watching that game, if I did it just slipped my mind, but I know penny was injured a lot that year.

For Lebron I thought game 1 against the Wizards in his first playoff game (06 or 07 I think) when he busted out with a triple double.

For Darko it was when he led the Pistons to the Finals in his rookie season.

this thread is about players ascending into stardom, so Darko should not be mentioned

For Adam Morrison, it was when he stood up and high-fived Kobe after their first championship together. It was epic.

Kobe's defining moment was definitely when he air balled those jumpers versus Utah. That was the day the Kobe Bryant who was just a kid trying to steal minutes from Van Exel and Jones disappeared and showed he was becoming a man that didn't fear failing.

Now the game that Kobe the player clearly ascended was when he locked Iverson up in Phili (2/20/00). That was the game he showed on both ends that he had the will and mentality to get after a guy like a true Doberman and facilitate the triangle without really calling his own number. Even Phil spoke of that day way back then as the day he saw that Kobe really got it for the first time.

Video of said day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyLg15UIRLY
