David Stern calls the shots, they just do what they're told.

Well they stink and ruin our sport every night!...

no they don't. they are neccesary. and they, for the most part, do a fine job. this thread just ruined my visit to this site.

absolutely not. The refs in the NBA are the best refs available to do the job.

Refs are not to blame...games are hard to officiate and i think for the most part the refs do a good job..

So who do you replace them with? Stern isn't hiding more skillful refs. There's a reason they are there and there's nothing that can be done for mistakes that are made that any ref might make.

I think Stern is to blame, he's the one trying to take physicality out of the game and the refs are just echoing his wishes

They need to replace the older guys. How often do you see old *** refs in soccer or hockey or other sports that involve calling calls on the run? I know I don't see any when I watch those sports, and that's probably for a reason.

I hate NBA refs, they're incredibly inconsistent.

I remember reading something a while back (I'll post it here if I find it, I have a feeling it was in a Bill Simmons column) that the NBA is different from other leagues in that it doesn't seek out officials to invite to the big leagues. Instead it has one training center (in Phoenix I believe), and you have to pay $500 to train there. That's the only way into NBA officiating. I have a huge issue with this system, why can't the NBA scout college and high school basketball for good officials?

EDIT: That's not quite true, my memory didn't serve me well there. But this is what I was attempting to remember:

The following is absolutely true: Last week, the NBA sent out a memo for its Development League Referee Tryout Camp, which is scheduled for June 19-21 in Los Angeles. Participants officiate two games with prospective D-League players and need a minimum of two years experience at the high school level or higher. Not only do the participants have to pay their own way to get there, but the NBA charges them a $550 fee that covers "lodging for two nights at the camp headquarters, transportation to and from the games, and a camp officiating jersey." YOU HAVE TO PAY TO TRY OUT! The NBA, where amazingly dumb happens.

This is from a great Bill Simmons column that was originally published on May 28th, 2009. Link here (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/090528&sportCat=nba).

It does highlight some issues with how the NBA handles it's officials though. Imagine basketball teams dealt with prospective players this way?

b-ball officiating is probably the most difficult officiating job in all of sports. They do a good job considering the task at hand. I think the NBA should allow more contact so refs don't have to make difficult (controversial) calls.

They should replace some of them because some are just terrible game in and game out but most of them are better then anyone else in the world.

They do miss alot of calls compared to other professional sports.

Human refs will have bias by nature.

The real problem lies in the the fact that the nba upper management knows these individual biases and assigns refs in order to control outcomes to their advantage.

The nba needs new management and new refs.

yes this is the correct poll option. I voted for the first one just in case the new guys will follow basketball rules instead of Stern rules

Super.

NBA officials are horrendous as a whole. It also doesn't help that many people believe that the league is "rigged", and honestly I can't blame fans for thinking that.

Way too subjective to call. Not enough sufficient evidence outside of suspicion to even think the idea of firing an entire officiating crew.
