What if tomorrow the Padres win, the Giants lose and the Braves also win. Therefore all of their records would be 91-71 and they'd all be tied for the wildcard as well as the padres and the giants being tied for the NL West. How would they solve that?

I realize that there are what if, but i'm just curious as to how they would decide.

sd and sf would play a 1 game playoff on monday. Whoever wins that would win the division. The loser of that would play against Atlanta on tuesday for the wild card.

the sf padres game would be in sd, then the loser still has a shot and has to travel to atl to play them for another playoff spot. needless to say everyone fan in the world wants this scneario to make the 2 off days incredible with some amazing baseball.

Lets go padres! Shock the world!

Basically, these three teams are just setting themselves up to be completely demolished by the Phillies. If the odds weren't against them before, they're really screwed now.

This ought to be fun. If I'm looking at the standings right, we have no idea who's playing who yet.

I like scenario 4 the best :)

Pepe did a good job describing the general scenarios, but I am going to take it a step further...

So there are actually 8 scenarios that can play out right now...

Scenario 1
Padres Win-Braves Lose

Result: Padres NL East Winners, Giants WC.

Odds: 25%
__________________________________________________ _______________________
Scenario 2
Padres Lose-Braves Win

Result: Giants win NL West, Braves win WC.

Odds: 25%
__________________________________________________ ________________________
Scenario 3
Padres Win-Braves Win

Result: 3 way tie.

Odds: 25%

______ Sub-Scenario 3.1
______ Padres lose 1 game playoff vs. Giants and then lose to Braves
______ Result: Giants win NL West, Braves WC
______ Odds: 6.25%

______ Sub-Scenario 3.2
______ Padres lose 1 game playoff vs. Giants and then beat the Braves
______ Result: Giants win NL West, Padres WC
______ Odds: 6.25%

______ Sub-Scenario 3.3
______ Padres win 1 game playoff vs. Giants and then Giants lose to Braves
______ Result: Padres win NL West, Braves WC
______ Odds: 6.25%

______ Sub-Scenario 3.4
______ Padres win 1 game playoff vs. Giants and then Giants beat the Braves
______ Result: Padres win NL West, Giants WC
______ Odds: 6.25%

__________________________________________________ _____________________
Scenario 4
Padres Lose-Braves Lose

Result: Giants win, Braves-Pads tie for WC

Odds: 25%

______ Sub-Scenario 4.1
______ Padres lose 1 game playoff vs. Braves
______ Result: Giants win NL West, Braves WC
______ Odds: 12.5%

______ Sub-Scenario 4.2
______ Padres beat Braves
______ Result: Giants win NL West, Padres WC
______ Odds: 12.5%

Now lets add up all the total probabilities...

Scenario 1
Padres: +25%
Giants: +25%

Scenario 2
Giants: +25%
Braves: +25%

Scenario 3
Giants: +6.25%
Braves: +6.25%
Giants: +6.25%
Padres: +6.25%
Padres: +6.25%
Braves: +6.25%
Padres: +6.25%
Giants: +6.25%

Combined: Giants: +18.75%, Padres +18.75%, Braves +12.5%

Scenario 4
Giants: +12.5%
Braves: +12.5%
Giants: +12.5%
Padres: +12.5%

Combined: Giants +25%, Braves +12.5%, Padres +12.5%

THUS, IF WE ADD ALL THESE PROBABILITIES TOGETHER!!!!!

ODDS OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS
Giants: 93.75%
Padres: 56.25%
Braves: 50%

The result equals 200% (not 100%) because there are two playoff spots to be had.

NOW: With all that being said. That is only if each team has a 50-50 chance of winning any given game. Coolstandings feels that there is a little fluctuation here as they have the Giants at 94.1%, Padres at 52.2%, and the Braves at 53.7%

I don't understand the 3-way tie. Why if Padres win they don't win the division by owning the tiebreaker in the division then the Giants go play the Braves for wild-card?

MooseWithFleas
10-03-2010, 11:32 AM
Because that's not how the tiebreaker works. MLB tradition has a 1 game playoff to decide the winner of a playoff spot. Now if the Pads win and the Braves lose. Pads and Giants will be tied, and Braves are out of it. There will NOT be a playoff in that scenario because both teams have already been awarded a playoff spot. The head to head tiebreaker will decide who wins the division and who wins the WC

AllStar44
10-03-2010, 12:03 PM
Ahh so it becomes a 3-way tie because all of them could be in the wild card spot, correct?

MooseWithFleas

Correct :)

Maybe the umpires are the ones hoping it happens. Hell, they're baseball fans too.
