Preseason finale tonight (Updated)

The Rangers jetted off to Ottawa at 10 a.m. this morning. I did not. The good news is, though, that when things start for real a week for today, I will again be on the road following the team (all trips booked through the end of December, save for the Thanksgiving week jaunt to Tampa Bay/Florida/Nashville). So here are my plans for today: babysit the niece and nephews for an overnight, DVR the Rangers game and watch John and Joe’s calls after the little ones pass out, presuming they haven’t worn me out to the point of passing out as well. Like the coaches, I want to reserve judgment on posting my roster predictions until I’ve seen all six games.

UPDATE: Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello have been brought up from Hartford for the game, with Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan not dressing. The Rangers say no injury concerns other than Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal, though Marc Staal, who said he tweaked his hip scoring in the third period last night, is also not dressing, though that’s not a surprise.

In the meantime, here’s some reading material: The article on Vinny Prospal’s injury and some advice for the NHL.

As for Prospal, before news of his knee inflammation (how the Rangers are officially terming the injury) broke, I chatted with him after Thursday’s practice. That’s when he mentioned that there was not a day last season (and, it turns out, this summer) that he didn’t feel some discomfort in his knee (which leads to some questions why the Rangers jumped to sign him on July 1 to a one-year deal worth $1 million in base salary with bonuses that could take it to $2.5 million). Prospal also spoke of the aging process and how he aggravated his knee during training camp.

“After the first five hard days, it became a little problem for me,” Prospal said. “In talking to (trainer) Jim Ramsey and everyone, we thought it would be better in the long run to stay off the ice.

“(Injuries) happen, it happens to other players,” Prospal said. “It’s just a matter of who can get through it. Obviously, I’m not the youngest guy anymore. I feel young in heart. But sometimes it gets tougher, you start play with players after you’ve played with their dads (Roman Horak). It’s just the way it goes. Nobody will be young forever. I believe in the way I’m conditioned. I can play with these guys.”

Prospal was excited and heartened on Thursday that, despite sitting out the first four preseason games, the coaches wanted to see him centering the top line with Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov. Then came Friday’s bad news.

The staff is really playing this down to the wire with cut decisions.

Big games for White, Kennedy, Fedetenko, Boyle and Christensen on offense.
- I think Stepan already has his spot written in and Wiese and Zucs are being sent back down regardless.

Big games for Valentenko, Eminger and McDonagh on Defense.
- I think Gilroy has secured his spot in this lineup and Sauer simply has written himself out with his average to sub par play this preseason.

But we'll see.

I cant stand these guys that fight with visors on. It is so unfair. How can a player punch back without breaking his hands?

2 not so smart plays there on that goal. First AA needs to take that shot. Then Gilroy can't throw it back to the point unless he is sure it will get there when nobody is covering for him.

Throw the puck towards the net on the ice and good things happen. Sort shot from outside left a big rebound for AA to knock home. 1-1

Emminger has some skills. You can see why he was a pretty high draft pick

Sauer has been better than Gilroy this preseason imo.
