Sources: Keith Smart to coach Warriors

The Golden State Warriors, with just a few days to go before the start of training camp, are on the verge of making a coaching change.

Sources with knowledge of the Warriors' thinking told ESPN.com that the club's new owners, Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, have decided to part company with Don Nelson -- who late last season became the winningest coach in league history -- and replace him with assistant Keith Smart.

The move is scheduled to be finalized by the end of the week, sources said, with Smart taking charge of the team in time for media day Monday and the team's first practice of the season Tuesday.

Nelson had one year remaining on his contract at $6 million. Sources said Nelson, as per the terms of his contract, will receive his full salary.

Although the sale of the Warriors from the much-maligned Chris Cohan to Lacob and Guber has not been formally ratified by the league, sources said that Cohan's successors have had their say on the bulk of the team's moves for much of the summer.

Sources said it was the new owners' preference to make the change before camp started and replace Nelson with Smart, who has previously served as a head coach in Cleveland before joining the Warriors as an assistant.

The Warriors and Nelson did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Nelson has said for months that he intended this season to be his last in coaching if the Warriors' new regime did want him back. One source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Thursday that Nelson, after celebrating his 70th birthday in May, is unlikely to coach again now that the Warriors have informed him that they want Smart to take over in conjuction with the ownership change, which could be made official through league ratification as soon as next month.

Revamped calibration of the Dubs off-season? A.

Now, there's just one more thing we need to handle... but I'm too satisfied right now to bother with that.

Nelson pulled off the infamous, "You Can't Fire Me, I Quit"

Don Nelson will resign as coach of the Warriors, CSNBayArea.com has learned from two sources close to the situation.

The announcement is scheduled to take place on Monday.

Anyways, Nelson is a HOF coach but I've never been a fan of his strategies.

Keith Smart as the replacement is great, also. He's got the knowledge/respect of the players already, and actually already coached them the past two weeks of the season (Nelson would literally just sit down and stare at the court during most timeouts at the end there).

Promising young coach.

Good decision, it was more than time for Nellie Ball to get out of the Bay Area.

A good offseason (although I hate that it cost us Randolph) and Nellie is out? This doesn't even seem real. Logical lineups and some semblance of defense this season should help me out of this dream.

Dude get over the 6 million. The owners knew that they weren't bringing Nellie back when they bought the team. So they paid 456 million instead of 450. I don't think these guys will lose sleep over it.

What a fantastic day.

Best news I have heard out of Warriors camp in a very, very long time. I will not miss Nelson's no defense, no rebounding philosophy. Goodbye and good riddance. This is a great moment in Bay Area sports! Let's play some real basketball that includes playing both sides of the court, which in turn might actually get us into the playoffs again one day. Maybe, dare I say, a deep run toward a championship in the distant future is possible with a half sane coach. Not this 123-125 loss bull**** P.S. - Nelson's attitude toward some of his players will not be missed. He had one good year (2007), and that's all he was good for. So happy right now! :D

I wonder what made them wait till now to do it:confused: Warriors have far better talent than what their results have shown and that's been because of the most odd thing in modern basketball (Don Old Nelson).

Nelson was a great coach in his time but his time has passed. Hopefully the Warriors will finally see some success now that Nelson's been let go.

LMAO- good point. People act as if Keeping nelson with the team would have been a better way to spend the 6 million bucks.

That way they throw away 6 million and throw away any chance of progressing this season.

LOl its not like they had the option of trading nelson onto another coaching staff.
