Don Mattingly will replace Joe Torre as manager of the Dodgers at the end of the season, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

An official announcement will be made Friday before the Dodgers' game against the Colorado Rockies.

Mattingly has been the Dodgers hitting coach since the middle of the 2008 season, which was Torre's first with the team. Before that, they were together with the New York Yankees.

The Dodgers announced earlier this season that Mattingly, who has never been a manager, would guide a team in the Arizona fall league, fueling speculation he was being prepared to take over the major league club.

Torre has been a manager for 28 seasons, the last three with the Dodgers. It is still possible he will remain with the organization, according to one of the sources, who required anonymity because the team had not yet announced the move.

i guess i should wait and give Donnie a chance, but as of now I hate this move

I hate Torre as a manager and am glad he's gone, but hiring Donnie might just be an extension of Torre

I wonder if Torre will retire. I doubt it. Some team will overpay for him.

I don't disklike Mattingly and I am so what eager to see how he does. However, I would have chosen Wallach from AAA. Let Mattingly go down and coach on the farm and see how he does.

If the Dodgers hitters were doing better I'd be more in favor of it but hitting is the reason we ended up not making the playoffs. Well that and Broxton + Torre pitching decisions.

Not really sure how you can reward a guy when the hitting just hasn't been there.

But I wish him the best and am glad Torre is going.

Super.

I could not disagree with u any more. Joe brought the dodgers back to the playoffs. Dont blame joe blame ownership for not getting any pitching or Kemp for taking the year off and Broxton melting down in the 9th all second half. Maybe you forgot how terrible Grady little was as manager of the dodgers. Joe is a GREAT manager and will be missed.

Wow, you're not a Dodgers fan are you? Maybe if you were you would realize Torre + Broxton cost the Dodgers a good 6 games at least this season. Several times Torre brought in Broxton in the 8th to try for a 4-5 out save and failed each time. Only to do the same thing again.

Torre agrees to keep Garret Anderson on the ball club after he batted a ridiculous sub .200 batting average. No reason he should have been on the team past May. They bring up Gibbons to replace him and he's probably hit the ball better than everybody. Too late for change now though.

Just goes to show that without a 120 million dollar payroll team filled with stars that his team bought like he had in NY, joe torre can't do **** as a manager and is total trash.

I actually would rather have Bruce Bochy over Torre. That shows how garbage torre is. Hope you enjoyed your media attention whore, because reality kicked in.

^ Only Torre will be well remembered but i hate how this messes up things with Tim Wallach... Not a big fan of this move at all

It seemed at though Joe was walking out the door already. I Like Mattingly as a replacement, but we'll see how he does as a manager next year.

Mattingly's been groomed as a manager for a few years now, should see if he lives up to the hype.

I can see him as a great batting coach not quite there IMO to manage. Catchers make the best managers.

have you seen the Dodgers since the break?
worst offense in baseball, overall most times being shutout in baseball as well

what a great hitting coach

Congratulations to "Donny Baseball" he has been a coach for so long, and deserves to finally get the nod as a manager. Even though it's the Dodgers one of the premier franchises I think he's in a lose-lose situation there with the whole McCourt divorce and the high expectations the club has every year.

There was a rumor that Mattingly got the job over Wallach because Wallach looks like a guy who could lead them far but based on the financial problems the organization has it's unlikely even a great coach would take a team far next season. So give it to Mattingly and then in 3 years when things maybe better find a better coach.
