For the vet minimum, why not?

Curious however as to why people all of a sudden think Kwame is a defensive specialist.

I guess this means they have no plans to try and re-sign Dampier after they waive him.

Dampier to Miami for veteran minimum.

Im seriously starting to believe that as long as Kwame Brown and Darko are physically capable of walking on their own strength that someone will sign them to a contract. These guys have literally carved out an entire career strictly on "potential."

Why the hell would you think anyone would want to watch this trash? Possibly the worst contribution to a thread I have ever seen. People simply posting "Mike James" is more constructive than this.

With that being said, I think it is very fitting that Kwame is reuniting with MJ.

To the surprise of countless NBA observers, Kwame Brown and Michael Jordan are together again.

A reunion that no one in the league expected after their well-chronicled difficulties in Washington will be taking place in Charlotte this season after Brown struck a one-year deal at the veteran minimum with the Jordan-owned Bobcats.

Mark Bartlestein, Brown's Chicago-based agent, told ESPN.com that the sides agreed to terms Monday after Brown played the past two seasons for the Detroit Pistons.

As a nine-year veteran, Brown will earn $1.3 million next season. The 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown appeared in 48 games last season, averaging 3.3 points and 3.7 minutes in 13.8 minutes per game.

"He really wanted to take the challenge of playing again for Michael and playing for a top coach like Larry Brown," Bartelstein said. "I think it says a lot about Kwame that he wanted to go to Charlotte.

The last few years have been difficult for him, but I think he's really excited to go there and try to create a new chapter in his career.
-- Kwame Brown agent Mark Bartlestein

"The last few years have been difficult for him, but I think he's really excited to go there and try to create a new chapter in his career. He wants this opportunity to go back and prove something."

Brown became in 2001 the first high schooler in league history to be drafted No. 1 overall when Jordan, as president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards, used his first draft pick as an executive on the Georgia teenager.

But the gamble worked out disastrously for both, with Brown chafing under the pressure of not only being drafted by Jordan but playing alongside him as a teammate when Jordan unretired and began his final comeback as a player shortly before Brown's rookie season.

With the drafting of Brown cited often as the prime misstep of what is generally regarded as an unsuccessful front-office tenure for Jordan, then-Wizards owner Abe Pollin abruptly cut ties with the future Hall of Famer after the 2002-03 season when Jordan hoped to return to his personnel role.

"Michael was very much a part of this," Bartelstein said of Jordan. "He wanted this to happen and he wanted to give Kwame another opportunity.

"There's been so much written about the fact that this was Michael's first pick [as an executive] and so much criticism directed at both of them when it didn't work out. When that happens you can do one of two things. You can run from all that or you can use it as motivation. What better way to try to turn your career around than to go back to where it all started?

"There were a lot of easier places Kwame could have gone, a lot of safer places. I think this says a lot about his competitive instinct and fire that he wanted to take on this challenge."

The latter qualities are areas in which Brown has been frequently questioned in the past, especially by Jordan himself when both were in Washington. But Bartelstein also cited Larry Brown's reputation as a teacher as another attraction for Kwame Brown as he tries, like fellow recent Bobcats signee Shaun Livingston, to resurrect his career.

It was widely presumed around the league that Jordan, because of their history, would not want to work with Brown again, but the 28-year-old -- at a bargain-basement price -- fills a need for the size-deficient Bobcats after attracting interest this summer from several playoff teams including Utah, Phoenix and Atlanta.

The Boston Celtics also strongly considered signing Brown before another future Hall of Famer, Shaquille O'Neal, agreed to sign with the Celtics at the league minimum.

The Bobcats have yet to officially comment on Brown's signing, but it's believed that Jordan is willing to try again with the much-maligned power forward not only because of the inviting price but because the other centers on the roster are thirtysomethings Nazr Mohammed and Erick Dampier and veteran DeSagana Diop, who has at times fallen out of favor with Larry Brown.

It's actually a pretty good signing. Ironic, but good.

Brown's a great defensive big who can rebounds and block a few shots. Nothing special, but for the vets minimum it's pretty good.

Still wondering where this perception of him being great defensively came from. I watched him for the last 2 years. While he isn't bad, to call him great is not accurate. As someone said earlier......maybe it is just the aspect of his game that he is the least bad at.

For vets minimum however, the Cats could have done worse.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The draft decision helped define both men in harsh terms: Michael Jordan was a failed executive, Kwame Brown(notes) a bust as a player.

Now, nine years after Jordan took Brown with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, they’re reuniting in hopes of shedding both labels.

The Jordan-owned Charlotte Bobcats on Monday came to terms with Brown on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $1.3 million. Agent Mark Bartelstein said Brown will sign on Tuesday.

“A really interesting story,” Bartelstein said. “Instead of running away from the shadow of Michael Jordan, he kind of embraced it.”

While the Bobcats need help in the middle after trading Tyson Chandler(notes) to Dallas last month, Brown would seemingly be the last center Jordan would turn to as he begins his first full season as majority owner.

Jordan was running the Washington Wizards in 2001 when he took the 6-foot-11 Brown straight out of high school with the first pick. The Georgia teenager wasn’t ready for the NBA, and Jordan was labeled as another superstar player unfit to run a team.

Jordan was fired from the Wizards in 2003, shortly after a comeback as a player. The Hall of Famer returned to the NBA three years later as part-owner of the Bobcats with the final say on basketball decisions. Jordan bought the team outright in the spring.

The 28-year-old Brown has bounced around the league with little success. He averaged 3.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 48 games with Detroit last season. He’s averaged 6.7 points and 5.4 rebounds with four teams over nine seasons, including two stints with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jordan couldn’t be reached on Monday, and Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Bartelstein said his client was intrigued about playing for Charlotte coach Larry Brown because he has a “great history of teaching and developing players.”

Larry Brown, who led the Bobcats to their first playoff berth last season, has always been intrigued with long, athletic shot-blockers who can play multiple positions.

It may be Kwame Brown’s last chance to show just that.

“We felt this was a critical year for him to kind of rebuild his career,” Bartelstein said. “He had a couple tough years. There were a lot of expectations and things didn’t go exactly the way he had hoped. So now it was about making a really good choice.

“There has been so much criticism in the past about him and Michael and the way it didn’t work out the first time in Washington. I think that was a really a challenge for Kwame, to come back and turn that around.”

The move comes as the Bobcats still have to make a decision with center Erick Dampier(notes), acquired in the deal for Chandler. Dampier has a non-guaranteed contract worth $13 million next season. The Bobcats have been leaning toward waiving him to clear much-needed salary-cap space.

You know he was desperate if he had to resort to Jordan to get a job

Very true. I hope Kwame has matured and has built some thicker skin over the years because MJ will be in his ear. This is a pretty bold move by MJ and the Bobcats. I think MJ will once again be disappointed if he thinks Kwame will be anything better offensively though. I really hope Kwame plays well for them.
