In Jerry Buss's Hall of Fame enshrinement speech, he refers to Pau Gasol as a "Spanish future Hall of Famer"

Thoughts?

Oops, thought I was in the NBA forum.

You are, however Gasol is a current player that is still playing, so I would assume this belongs here.

Only retired players or guys not playing anymore would a thread like this belong in the "Classic" section.

he will be a hof'er

Yessir. A 20 and 10 allstar, probably end up with about 5 rings when its all over that he had a big role in, international superstar.... sounds like HOF material to me!!!

I dont see why the first option and the second option of a multiple championships team would not enter the HOF. If Gasol wants to make it a stronger case for himself, just three-peat and everybody will hush against it.

So I hear many people on here having different opinions about criteria to get into the HOF.

Do you guys think if Gasol (the same player) would have been in Memphis his entire career and most likely not win any titles that he would still be HOF material based on his stats, skill set, and international resume?

Most people just take his NBA resume into account..

But going into the Hall, there's also international play that goes into deciding who gets in or not. There's a couple international players in the HOF and the Olympic Dream Team (international) just got in collectively as a team.

If you take Gasol's NBA resume only, then it can be argued that he doesn't belong yet. But when you take his NBA and International resume, and bring it together, HOF bound in my opinion.

Pau's a legend oversees, and is a hugely underrated piece in these Laker Championships (I've said it a million times - every bit as important as Kobe imo). He'll be a HOF'er, I have no doubt about that.

edit:
ROY, multiple All Star (with more coming), multiple Championship winner as a co #1 or high #2, and an international icon in Europe. He's probably there already, and with his style of play has half a decade of elite play to come.

first ballot. i would go so far as to say that without even considering his international accolades. the guy is a super-stud.

kobe doesn't win "his" rings without pau gasol. he managed to carry horrid grizzlies teams to first-round sweeps every year, and made the lakers an instant contender. an international kevin garnett. gotta love that his second passion is ,oh you know, spinal surgery.

His NBA resume may not be "HOF" caliber, but he's done more than enough internationally to get in.

The guy has put up crazy numbers and is winning rings now, wouldn't be the Main Event Speech but he'd be a solid opening guy.

I agree with Buss. The Lakers are at their best when the triangle is ran through him, and he's got two titles to his name.

Well he isn't a 20/10 guy, he is only a 19/9 guy over his entire career- he has actually never had a 20/10 season <---- Check it out, I didn't believe it either. Not a huge difference but he should have more boards though for such a dominant big guy. With a few more good/great seasons (which he could have and most likely will have, considering he isn't even 30 yet, WOW, I mean he looks like he is a 48 year old Arabie) and a couple championships he can get in. I don't know much about his FIBA and international career to know if he deserves HOF consideration based solely off that, can someone fill me in on it?

For as young as he is and the way he has been playing recently, 2 more big seasons might be enough to seal the deal, but he might have a lot more than 2 great seasons left in the tank.

gasol 18.8 / 8.7 / 3.3 2 asg 2 rings

dumars 16.6 / 2.2 / 4.5 6 asg 2 rings

worthy 17.6 / 5.1 / 3.0 7 asg 3 rings

mchale 17.9 / 7.3 / 1.7 6 asg 3 rings

pippen 16.1 / 6.4 / 5.2 7 asg 6 rings

now let's just agree that pippen is aberration in regards to championships thanks to mj. gasol stacks up quite favorably with these guys individually and in terms of achievements. the only difference is in the all star appearances (and a few first team all nba appearances). keep in mind he was buried away in memphis, in every conceivable way. ill admit i didnt think much of him, certainly not in this light, back in the middle of his memphis career. one more ring would make it a 100% no brainer i think.

RaiderLakersA's
08-17-2010, 04:30 PM
NBA career (with 2 championships) + International career (more accolades that you can shake a stick at) = Yes, HOF bound, if he were to retire today.

Fortunately Pau's not retiring today, and his body of work will increase as Kobe inevitably declines with age. I could easily see Pau being our #1 option, de facto, in a year or two and the Lakers bringing in talent to build around him.

I won't bother getting into whether he's first or second ballot. No one cares about that once you're in.

some blackholes may suck out all his potential of getting there, he has to keep his reputation and so on...

solid statistics, 2 rings and especially international achievements should bring him into HOF

it's just hard to tell if someone is worth getting there after his career while still playing

How many wins did Gasol have in the playoffs as the so-called "best player"? While Dumars was the Finals MVP on one of the greatest, if not greatest defensive teams ever. Dumars defensively was MILES ahead of Gasol, while I give the advantage to Pau on offense.

Pau's international resume is really what brings him into the Hall at THIS point in his career.
