Oakland Athletics

Monday, August 16, 7:05 PM PT, Oakland Coliseum

Shaun Marcum, RHP 10-6, 3.87 ERA http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/tor-marcum.jpg vs http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/oak-anderson-1.jpg Brett Anderson, LHP 3-3, 2.88 ERA

Marcum had his worst outing of the season Wednesday vs. Boston. Uncharacteristically, he walked three batters in the game's first frame, and had trouble settling down afterwards. Marcum lasted just four innings, allowing eight runs and four homers.

Anderson has thrown back-to-back sharp performances since struggling in his first outing back from the 15-day disabled list. He allowed one run over seven innings on Tuesday but was outdueled by Seattle's Felix Hernandez in a 2-0 loss.

Tuesday, August 17, 7:05 PM PT, Oakland Coliseum

Brandon Morrow, RHP 9-6, 4.45 ERA http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/tor-morrow.jpg vs http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/oak-braden.jpg Dallas Braden, LHP 7-8, 3.56 ERA

After throwing 137 pitches in a one-hit, 17-strikeout performance against the Rays on Aug. 8, Morrow was skipped a turn in the rotation to preserve his arm. Morrow has won his last four decisions, averaging 10 strikeouts per game over that span.

Braden tossed another complete game on Wednesday, his second in three starts and third this year, to lead the A's to a 5-1 win over Seattle. He is 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA in five starts since returning from the 15-day disabled list with elbow stiffness.

Wednesday, August 18, 12:35 PM PT, Oakland Coliseum

Marc Rzepczynski 1-1, 4.42 ERA http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/tor-Rzepczynski.jpg vs http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/snarlyb/oak-gonzalez.jpg Gio Gonzalez, LHP 10-8, 3.49 ERA

Rzepczynski showed the form that excited the Blue Jays in 2009, blanking the Angles for seven innings on Friday in the longest outing of his career. Rzepczynski makes his third start of 2010 on Wednesday at Oakland.

Coming off seven shutout innings, Gonzalez was effective in his last start, throwing six innings and allowing only three hits. He was hurt by two unearned runs, among the four he allowed, and took the loss against the Twins.

I could see either team sweeping. This will be a hard series. Ultimately I think we will win 2 of 3 and hopefully even sweep. Gonzalez will be tough to beat unless Rzep does what he did to the Angels.

Game day preview from MLB.com:

The A's are in desperate need of some home cooking. The Jays are fine right where they are.
Coming off a disastrous 1-5 road trip, the A's will look to turn things around at the Oakland Coliseum on Monday. So far this season the A's have boasted an impressive 34-24 home record, while showcasing a minuscule 2.86 ERA -- the lowest home ERA in the American League.

The Blue Jays on the other hand, are riding a series victory over the Angels in Anaheim, and are 10-6 as visitors since the All-Star break.

If the Jays are to keep within sniffing distance of a playoff spot, they will need a bounceback effort from starter Shaun Marcum. The club's de facto ace had his worst outing of the year on Wednesday against the Red Sox, getting shelled for eight runs over just four innings. The crafty righty was unable to fool anybody as he was taken deep a career-high four times, walking an uncharacteristic three batters in the game's first frame.

The Jays offense continues to do its part, leading the league with 181 long balls this season -- 78 coming on the road. While third baseman Jose Bautista may lead the Majors with 36 blasts, designated hitter Adam Lind, who homered in Sunday's contest off Dan Haren, has been tearing the cover off the ball since the All-Star break. The 27-year old has hit .314 with five home runs, seven doubles and two triples since the Midsummer Classic.

In contrast, the A's offense relies on speed not power. The A's failed to hit a home run during Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Twins, to extend their homerless drought to a season-high seven games. The last time the club underwent such a slump was May 18-25, when it also went seven games without a blast. Nevertheless, the A's rank fourth in the AL with 100 stolen bases. When the A's record at least one steal they are 41-19.

Looking to build off a string of two solid performances, 22-year-old Brett Anderson will get the nod for the A's on Monday. Anderson eclipsed the seven-inning plateau in each of his two previous outings, allowing only three runs over that span and limiting opponents to a .170 batting average.

Blue Jays: What Pressure?
In his first start since signing a five-year, $30.1 million contract extension, starter Ricky Romero held the Angels to just one run over seven innings in Sunday's 4-1 victory. To put more pressure on the 25-year-old lefty, he pitched in front of friends and family -- he's a Southern California native. ... Rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia continues to struggle after his 4-for-5 debut with two home runs on Aug. 7. Since then Arencibia has failed to record a hit, going 0-for-11 over his following three starts.

A's: What Gives?
Over the A's past 21 games they have on 15 occasions played a team that was in first at the time of the contest. The A's have a 30-40 record vs. opponents that were above .500 and 27-19 vs. teams that were below the .500 threshold. ... The A's offense has averaged just two runs per game over their past seven showings.

Worth noting
The Blue Jays placed left-hander David Purcey on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, with a right foot injury sustained while covering first base. ... Toronto is second in the American League with a .692 (18-8) winning percentage since the All-Star break. ... Andrew Bailey underwent a successful bullpen session Sunday morning and could possibly be activated from the disabled list on the A's homestand this week.

Game day preview courtesy of MLB.com:

Struggling A's face tall task against Morrow

It's no secret that the Oakland offense has struggled mightily in the past week, and Tuesday's opponent on the mound probably won't provide any relief for that lineup.
Blue Jays' righty Brandon Morrow will take the hill for the first time since he struck out 17 Rays and was one out away from a no-hitter when Toronto faces the A's in the second of a three-game set on Tuesday at Oakland Coliseum.

Morrow skipped a turn in the rotation after tossing 137 pitches in the one-hit effort on Aug. 8 and will be aiming to win his fifth start in a row. During that span, he is averaging 10 strikeouts per contest.

That's bad news for the A's offense, which has flirted with being a victim of a no-hitter for two consecutive days. After Twins starter Kevin Slowly did not allow a hit in seven innings before departing Sunday's game, the A's only mustered one hit against Toronto starter Shaun Marcum on Monday -- a leadoff home run by Conor Jackson in the seventh.

All told, the A's have scored just 12 runs in their past seven games, during which they have posted a 1-6 mark.

"It's important for us to get our offense going back to where we know we can swing the bat," A's manager Bob Geren said. "Our pitching was so impressive that the 1-5 road trip is not indicative of how we pitched. ... We just need to match some of those numbers with some offensive output, and it will equal a lot of wins."

The A's will counter with Dallas Braden, who, of course, is no stranger to no-hitters. He has also been successful since coming off the disabled list on July 20, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.83 ERA. That includes a complete-game win against Seattle on Aug. 11, when he gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out six batters.

Braden will be the second of three lefties in a row that the Blue Jays will face, which presents a unique challenge for Toronto's power offense. The Blue Jays tagged A's southpaw Brett Anderson for three runs in six innings on Monday.

"It's a little different," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "I think that's probably the first time I've ever been through something like that. I can't remember facing three left-handers in a row. Most teams don't have three left-handed starters."

Blue Jays: Toronto continues to fly high
Even A's starter Brett Anderson, who hadn't allowed a home run all season, isn't immune to the Blue Jays' big boppers. Toronto hit two long balls off Anderson on Monday, including the 37th dinger off the bat of Jose Bautista. The Blue Jays have now hit a Major League-leading 183 home runs this season, which are 22 ahead of second-place Boston.

"That's the kind of team I thought we had, and it turned out to be that's what we have here -- a team with power," Gaston said. "I'd certainly like to mix in a few doubles here and there and then a home run. ... We lost games this year hitting six home runs. We kind of really depend on our power."

Athletics: Jackson returns with a bang
Though the Oakland offense was quiet again on Monday against the Blue Jays, Jackson made an impact with his bat in his first game since returning from a six-week stint on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

Oakland also activated outfielder Travis Buck from the DL on Monday. He started in right field and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. To make room for Jackson and Buck on the 25-man roster, the A's optioned outfielder Chris Carter and infielder Jeff Larish to Triple-A Sacramento.

"Frustrating is probably not the word I'm looking for, it's probably something a little more," Jackson said of his feelings about the injury before Monday's game. "This hamstring's been bothering me all year, and it feels good now, finally. I feel healthy and it's good to feel healthy."

Worth noting
The Blue Jays have won eight of the last nine games against the A's, dating back to 2009. ... Bautista leads the Majors in home runs (13), RBIs (33) and extra-base hits (22) since the All-Star break. He's also batting .318 over that stretch. ... Adam Lind has posted a .409 average in his last 12 games with three home runs, four doubles, one triple and seven RBIs. ... The A's 71 home runs are the second fewest in the Majors. ... Oakland has stolen 35 bases since the All-Star break, which led the Majors entering Monday. The A's have stolen 100 bases overall this season. ... A's reliever Michael Wuertz has not allowed a run in seven career appearances against the Blue Jays (8 1/3 innings).

Wow, disappointing for a couple of reasons.

1. We lost.
2. The forums were down from the 3rd inning on.

Morrow certainly did not have his best stuff tonight.
And this loss just exemplifies how bad the Jays bullpen truly is. A worthy pen would have kept this game close. This was just plain fugly.

StealingSigns
08-18-2010, 01:26 AM
And another thing... Could this be the worst game played defensively by the Jays this entire season?

I blame the loss on Bautista's moustache! It has bad karma.

heusy_79
08-18-2010, 10:41 AM
Agreed. His beard was known to hit 500 foot home runs while Jose was asleep. What moustache do you know that has ever pulled that off?

08-18-2010, 10:50 AM
At least Overbay rocked the handle bar moustache...but it didn't do much for his performance at the beginning of the season either.

The only acceptable moustaches: Tom Selleck, Borat, Eddie Shack and Lanny McDonald.

Can't forget Wendel Clark, I'm not Leafs fan but that man could rock a stache with the best of them.

Some of the blame had to go to Cito... How long did you expect Tallet to go before giving up runs. He should have been thankful he got 2 innings and should have went with the extremely fresh pen

blame goes on the whole team. the starter didn't do his job, the hitters didn't do theirs, the bullpen etc etc
