If you had to choose between 1 Championship ... JUST 1 over the next 20 years....... or Playing in the Playoffs every single year yet NEVER winning 1.. Which would you choose ? Id choose that 1 Title. (Tougher call than i thought)

I would take the title. No one remembers the runners up.

As fan of a young franchise, as much as I may want that title, I would have to choose playoffs.
Just a matter of creating consistency and a culture of winning. (the gate helps too.)
Though, if you were to tell me my team would get ousted in the 1st round each year... that would be a different story!

I would take a title then suck the next 9 years.

That's a tough one. Become a champion, but then be a lottery team for the next decade? Ouch.

I'll take the 1 championship since it's a rare occurrence, not every team has the privilege to win one.

Does 1 championship mean that the other years the team would be a lottery team?

As a Cubs fan, you dream about a championship. So in my opinnion I would do anything for a championship, even if it means never making the playoffs after that.

RING, because it goes down in your franchise history! playoffs dont mean that you were ever the greatest at one time it just means you were competing for it but never made it.

I don't mean a thing if you don't get a ring, so I'll take the title.

Say the Knicks won in 99 vs the Spurs but are the same franchise since then. I think I would rather be a fan of the Mavs or Suns. They are relevant every year and pose a threat to win while the Knicks have been the doormat of the league. Fans can enjoy about 90 games per year vs 90 in ten years. Championships are rare and you are elated for one off season, thats it. After that all you can say is remember when I enjoyed watching my team that year, 10 years ago. More than half the league makes the playoffs so to not make it means you are really bad and to endure that for 10+ years sucks and means that you are purely unwatchable. I'll take the perennial playoff team.

You play for a championship.

Trust Minnesota fans - we were pretty close to that 20 years of playoffs but got bumped 1st round after 1st round. If you don't win the championship you just lost like everybody else.

Not even a question, the ring. No one remembers/cares about those that didn't make it.

Man, this is like asking a country in the WC if they would rather have 1 WC win or 10 straight runners-up... it's just dumb. Obviously 1 WC trophy > any amount of deep runs that didn't end up with a title.

Title for sure. I could rest in peace if we win at least one title.

So your asking if I want to be the Tampa Bay Bucs of the 2000's or the Philadelphia Eagles of the 2000's?

If you are the Utah Jazz or a small market team than you would take the consistent winning years with no championship. I know the Utah Jazz fans would say different but if you look at teams like the Jazz.......There is no way the Jazz would stay in Utah. They could not afford it and they would have to move to another state.

If your favorite team is a small market team that couldn't handle multiple years of losing than you would be smart to say consistent years in playoffs.

If your the Knicks or LA etc etc you would take the championships. If your dedicated to your city and the team there than its a easy decision.

Its more of a financial decision than actually a winning decision in some teams cases.

The question is flawed and simply doesn't explain enough.

You can win 1 championship over the next 20 years, but still be in the playoffs for all 20 years. Or you could never win a championship and still be in the playoffs ever year.

Now, is this playoff team an actual contender, or are they sneaking in with the 8th seed for half of those years, or are they legitimately a contender for 17 of those 20 years? And when in in the course of those 20 years do they win their title? Is it year 1 and then they blow chunks for the next 19 years? Or is it a work in progress for 10 years, then they win their title, and then a few key guys leave and the team never recoves for 10 years?

There are simply too many variables to such a question for a simple answer.

A title is great, but if it's followed by 19 years of being the worst team in the league (like say if the Pirates had won the Series in 1992, and then did what they've done since) is that really worth it? Or would you rather be actually excited about your team for a decade (see Dallas Mavericks) strong and continue to have faith that your team will do what it can to win that title, even if it remains elusive.

I'd choose the ring but only if it is before Jerry retires...he deserves it more than anyone in the league.

If Jerry doesn't get the ring I'd take the playoffs.

As an owner or player on a team, I would choose the one championship. As a fan, I would rather see my team relevant and contending in the playoffs every year.

I think what needs to be answered is how will my team finish the rest of the decade? If it is one championship and a decade straight of being completely worthless, I'd like the consistency of playing in the playoffs every year and showing people we can do things right.

i go for championship. champions write the history of the game. consistent playoff appearance in years is just close enough to become a champion and close enough aint enough. there's no success in it. it frustrates people not making to the top unless if they dont care to win the ring and just making the playoffs.
