Yes I said both lol but I don't think LA will do that...

I say 24, bc it was HIS team That's just me

What do y'all think?

24

He's won two titles as the main guy wearing 24 and I think that's what he'll be more remembered for.

Oh, and this should be in the Lakers forum.

24 no doubt...would be silly to retire both

24 especially if he wins more titles

He's accomplished a lot with the #24 and is on the verge to add to his already impressive resume. No way both get retired, but I can see no player picking #8 simply out of respect in the future.

i would like to see him get retired as #8 but kobe will prob be retired as #24

Retiring numbers is kind of a wasted idea unless it is league-wide.

Then MJ's number 45 would have to be retired as well? Don't think so.

#24 is when he did his solo winning.

24. Number 8 will remind too many people of the Shaq and rape incidents.

i picked both like a weirdo, but he did represent and carry himself well as 24 if they had to choose it should probably be 24...

he won his first MVP with #24 and if he retires with the #24 than that's the one the Lakers should retire

I think both because he has done so much with both number. Number 8. 3 Chips, 81 point game , 62 in three quarters outscoreing the total Dallas out put, most threes in one game, also most threes without missing, just to name an few. Then ther is 24. Mvp, 2 Chips and counting, Most points in Lakers history, 50 point games in an row, 60 point games in an row, Most points in Madison square gardens history, and more to come. Ther should be one jersey split with both numbers on it.

my guess is that it will be the number that he wants

Nobody should have 2 to numbers retired but to decide which one is the question? Im going with 24 which he lead and earned both finals MVP's.

#8 had some unbelievable achievements like the 81pt game, 62 in 3 Q's, most 3's in a game, and to be a part of the 3-peat. But #24 is when he won with him being the main guy. Also, the 50pts streak the first year he changed his #, so I gotta go with the #24.

Since 24 is the era after Shaq I'd say retire 24.

It should be #24 since he most likely will retire still using that number. However, he has more achievements under #8.

The real question is do the Lakers retire Shaq's #34? He won three titles and was a dominant force in the NBA...including MVPs. However, is seven years on a team long enough for ur jersey to be retired????

Retire #824.

Hindy27
08-11-2010, 04:28 AM
I can't believe so many people have voted 'both'. To retire 2 numbers for him would be stupid.

I'd say when they get to that point they'll ask him him which one he wants retired, seeing how he is in 24 now and most likely will be until he retires, I'd say it will be 24 that he'd pick.

Although I'd doubt any new Lakers players would be rushing to use number 8, so it'll be a bit like having 2 numbers retired anyway.

8 is unofficially retired. Javaris Crittenton wanted to wear the #8, but Laker officials told him he couldn't wear the number. 24 will definitely be officially retired, but I am not sure if they will ever officially retire #8.

Kobe is a Legend, whatever number he wore should be retired. I'm one of the few Bulls fans that think 45 should be retired, but for Jack Haley not MJ. jk

I want to say both, simply because when I see #8, I immediately think of Kobe. I'm beginning to get that same feel for #24, and by the time Kobe retires, I'm sure that perception will be etched in stone.

I liked #8 version better, yea he was cocky with a I can take on the world mentality, but I truly believe thats when he played his best basketball. The playoff run of 01, the entire regular season in 03 before running out of gas in the playoffs.

But people dont care about level of play, they care about the level of play of your teammates, so they will probably remember his days as "the man" instead of his days as a superior basketball player

Completely agree. Would be cool to be the first athlete to have two numbers retired by the same team (as far as I know). He deserves it. Has been a great Laker.

kinda like Jordan and 45?

Why should number 45 be retired for Jordan? He didn't even where it for a full season. He abandened it after the first game of the series against Orlando and was subsequently fined I think $50,000 by the NBA for it. And he came back that season after the all-star break so how can it be justified that number be retired? Jordan also wore a different number for one game because they lost his jerseys or something like that. I think it was number 12 but can't remember it for sure. So, should that be retired as well?

Kobe wore each number for several seasons and has accomplished great things wearing both including multiple championships. That is why I think that both numbers be retired for Kobe.

just an fyi if this goes to the Laker forum I am sending it back.. If you guys want to get rid of it, close it or delete it..

On the thread at hand, I would say both, because Kobe as number 8 broke a lot of records

jordan's #23 jersey was stolen before the game against the magic. yup he used 12 in the game vs magic but his name wasn't put because it was like in a hurry.

Both. He's done more with the # 8 than half the league has done in a lifetime and they have their number's retired. I remember Wilbon a couple years back when he changed his number and what number they will retire and he said something along the lines of that he would add 10 to his number and don the 34 so they retire that as well and not Shaq's! :laugh2:

both

#8 3 championships in a row. 56 points in 3 quarters against mj. 62 points in 3 quarters against the mavs. what was it.. 6??? 50 point games in a row? 10 40 point games in a row?
81 points in a single game. won the dunk contest. was the nba's most loved player and hated player at one point in the #8 era. averaged 35.4 points per game in one season

#24. won an mvp, 2 finals mvp's, back to back championships. the man of his team. known as the nba's best player. older more mature kobe. holds record for most points scored in one game at msg all time. could possibly win more mvps and more championships. also will be the nba's most loved player this season and hero

24. Two numbers by the same player is ridiculous for a team to retire.
