View Full Version : NBA gets rid of fouls and starts power plays like hockey?

What would happen if the NBA gets rid of fouls and starts power plays like hockey?

Rules once a team reaches 4 team fouls the player that committed the 4th foul needs to go into a penalty box for :60.
The team fouls are reset every period and reset after a power play.

This would also stop intentional fouls towards the end of the game or rather make teams play more carefully in the fourth quarter in order to save the team fouls.

No players could now foul out of games.

I think it would create an interesting landscape and also a more wide opened game. There would be less dumb fouls, however this could 'cause a lack of physical behavior that we've all grown to love.

Though I wouldn't be opposed to the NBA trying this for a season.

thoughts?

Nah....power plays are only good in the NHL because it is hard to score regardless. Imagine if a team was playing the Heat or Lakers. Just pass the ball out to Derek Fisher or Mike Miller and just drain open three for the next 2 minutes....

no goalie... it would be a 60 second annihilation for whichever team is in foul trouble... constant doubles with no open man to pass to, and it would be so easy to score 4 v 5... run a quick p n r and game over...

Great idea!!!!!

Not. How would that ever work?

maddBat

that would probably ruin the game. 5 vs 4 in ball is 1 hell of an advantage. we r talking about professionals here.

Instead of that, let's make nba players fight like they do in hockey.

Seriously, I like the game just how it is. No need to change anything.

I could see you put much thought into this but its not something league would do. It just doesn't make sense for basketball. Scoring is obviously easier in basketball than in hockey, so imagine if a team is down a man. It'll ruin the game. Think about the final minute of a close game and a team is down a man.

This is ****ing idiotic. Players would try to hurt each other, just as they do in hockey.

I've been thinking about this for years! It would be a terrific idea, and it provides an interesting twist and strategy towards it. Who's with me on approving this fantastic idea?!NOT. Pretty bad idea considering the game of basketball is easy to score, rather than hockey which it's hard to score. Also, there's no goal in basketball, what's the point? Once that happens, I would expect a 20-point blowout.

your new-edition of the nba may be welcomed widely by the US but will definitely not be accepted by overseas fans, compromising a huge trunk of their global revenue. Not feasible from the business standpoint, you are basically changing this to another version of football and a completely different business model.

How about we just let NBA players duke it out NHL style ?

Man, I would buy season tickets every year if that happened.

Just to make sure it's not too dangerous, the players can wear basketball adapted hockey masks and like elbow pads and stuff.

So if your down 4 points with oo:26 left on the clock and the opponent has the ball, you should pretty much give up. Great Idea.

No no no..... Would be interesting but no... And idk if I would want to see more carful play in the NBA. Hard fouls and " playoff fouls" are important to the game, the inly thing I would take from hocky would be fighting :). No offense to any hocky fans here but there's a reason NBA is sooooo much bigger than the NHL

I Like my NBA just the way it is... Dont want to see the game any different and it would be a slap in the face to the greats who played and stats could and would change

i would just play 4-4 on defense and leave 1 cherry picker. after every rebound just throw it the length of the court for a dunk. too easy.

what the hell are you talking about...this would be accepted by americans, the number one basketball country in the world, but not by the rest of the world who hardly cares about basketball?

im curious to hear your logic on this one...

the team on the powerplay could double team the other team and we all know 60 seconds in a basketball game down the stretch of a game is the most important part of the game so intentionally fouling wouldn't be used with that

If they're going to borrow an idea from hockey, I'd rather see them allow fist fights occasionally.

fist fighting would be interesting but would turn too nasty. back in hockey, you can't really use much out of the punch with no momentum coming from the feet, which is why they grab each other.

That's a good point. Maybe they'd have to make it kind of like free throws, where each guy has to stand behind a line with his feet planted. The distance between the 3-point line and the rounded top of the key would probably be about right for this.

Mr. Guy, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
