View Full Version : What if the Celtics signed Iverson and McGrady now, would they be the favorites?

Now that the Celts signed Shaq, it made me wonder what would happen to the NBA if they signed Iverson and McGrady.

They already have 5 over the hill superstars of the past (Garnett, Allen, Pierce, Shaq, Jermaine). I think Iverson and McGrady would buy into bench roles if everyone else on this team bought into less minutes as well. All these players were once perennial superstars. I think their egos would go down if they did a 7 for 1 championship type thing. Where everyone just embraces that no one guy is going to be the leader.

Rondo/Nate/Avery Bradley
Allen/Iverson/Von Wafer
Pierce/McGrady
Garnett/Jermaine/Glen Davis
Perkins/Shaq

I honestly can't see how this team could be stopped. The Celtics should do it in an instant. With that second unit only playing 15-20 minutes a game, Iverson, T-Mac and Shaq could all be very, very effective. And the first unit would be very well rested for the playoffs. Everyone would. If no one but Rondo played more than 27-30 minutes, this team could be scary.

Evidence: When Iverson, Shaq and McGrady played limit minutes last year, they were able to play like superstars once again. Lakers vs 76ers last year, Iverson went off for like 22 points. On the Knicks, McGrady showed flashes of greatness. And when Shaq was limited, he had a lot left in the tank. The Celtics would have to worry about Allen having a 0 for 12 performance in the finals, insert one of these former superstars and it will make up for it.

It's 8 over the hill superstars vs. Miami's superteam. How would it work?

McGrady would help but Iverson would just hurt their chances.

I really think this is true. Iverson would hurt a team that is based largely around great chemistry and does not have the superior skills to make him worth the risk at this point.

the reason they are not favorites is their are too many old players, adding two more won't help....

t mac dont want to come off the bench, and even if they did sign there it would all depend on kg's health. i think they could win the east without those guys if kg stays healthy, but if he gets hurt they will be in a lot of trouble

There's a reason why no teams are showing interest in Shaq/Iverson/McGrady - they are effectively done. And would you really want that much ego shelved on a BENCH? God that would be ugly for a teams chemistry. Looking at Shaq is already pushing it imo.

If the Knicks were to sign Iverson and McGrady (lol), they might as well complete the set of over the hill guys going for the first title on the coat tails of a team...

Sign Stephon Marbury (again), Steve Francis & Penny Hardaway.

Maybe if this was NBA 2K, but there are too many egos there, Doc Rivers wouldn't be able to manage that.

No. They'd just be a team full of old, injury prone, stars.
Still great, but not favorites.

It would be fun to play as them in a video game, but I don't think it would work. AI and Tmac still think they're starters.

thats a smart thing to say, especially when you're the one who started running his mouth.
how about you wait for the knicks to become semi respectable before you open your mouth? i sure as hell wouldn't of been posting the kind of stuff you were posting during the celts 24 win season.

well its true in this case that iverson prob wouldnt help, but that last statement is complete ********, considering he put his team on his back and made it to the finals ... he had much less talent on that roster than lebron did on cleveland btw

with the exception of that one season in an AWFUL eastern conference, every team he has been on is better before he comes, and once he leaves. He hasnt gone to a team and improved them ever.

Lol so Det was a better team when he left??? haha yea ok...they were one of the worst teams in the league this year

Are you forgetting about the 76ers??..They were the laughing stock of the league next to the clippers before AI got there..and yea they never won a title but he consistently got them to the playoffs almost every season he was healthy for...

When he went to the nuggets they had their first 50 win season in team history...and I know your going to say they lost in the 1st round but if you want to downplay AI making it to the finals cuz the conference was "awful" then you have to give him credit for winning 50 games in a year when the west was the toughest its ever been...

Once he went to Detroit I'll admit his career has been trash since then, even though this past season showed that team is just garbage to begin with but you can't deny he turned the 76ers franchise around even if you dont want to give him credit for having a 50 win season in Denver...
