As a Dodger fan, its awesome that we got someone the rest of the NL West wanted, and arguably needed

We got a cheaper Juan Pierre who can get on base. I like this trade. Plus he can cover for Manny when he has his cramps, pulled hammy/calf strain sissy injuries. Now hopefully, by some miracle....we get a few SP's.

As a Giants fan, i think its awesome that we drove up the price for Pods and probably made the dodgers overpay. We need a big bat. We don't need a guy like Pods when you have Andres Torres. If and when we make an acquisition for a bat, it will be for a guy with more pop that Pods. Pods wouldn't have done anything for us.

The trade wasn't really that bad for the Dodgers I mean Lucas May hasn't showed that much power or plate discipline so far, so overall I like this trade for the Dodgers.

I think the Padres were the only other team who was considering Podsednik.

Yes he is. He's gonna be a 4th OFer. Guess who our 4th OFer has been? Garrett Anderson. It's a significant upgrade, and he can play LF until Manny (little *****) returns.

So really no true top 20 prospects. May att best is a nice MLB backup and the other kid is not a high upside guy. Pretty much a "meh" deal all the way around

I guess he does bring some extra speed to the line-up.

He won't be a difference maker as far as the team's fate is concerned, but it does add some depth and speed. For instance, if the old hag Manny Ramirez gets on base late in the game, Podsednik can pinch run and remain in LF. Hopefully this promps the Dodgers to dump Anderson, who has been somewhat of a liability.

Exactly, both players won't make much of a difference considering Pat is a bench player.

I know a lot of people think getting him is nothing special...but the guy gets on base. Is hitting close to .300. He steals bases. You compare him to Reed Johnson, Garret Anderson or Xavier Paul........it is an upgrade. Not one which is going to shift the power in the west...but he is an upgrade regardless. He's a cheap Juan Pierre. Look at what Pierre did when Manny was out? He's going to do a lot more then what people think.

THINKBLUE15
07-28-2010, 10:22 PM
Yeah this is nothing special.

Nor is it supposed to be. It's just to add depth and grab a good role player. And in that respect, the Dodgers made a good deal.

oooo cutting!

Asinine collateral comments aside, I don't think anyone expected anything from Burrell; the opportunity simply arose to sign him for cheap.

Scotty Pods is so classic, looking back on it the Sox would have been wise to keep him instead of trading for Pierre.

I love what he brings to a team, but if Scott Podsednik is starting in the Dodgers' outfield for an extended period of time, the only team they will be on top of is Arizona.

There is no team in baseball with an outfield that remotely compares to their Opening Day Outfield of Ramirez, Kemp, and Ethier. Ethier is an unbelievable hitter, but unless Manny Ramirez finds a way to stay healthy and starts hitting home runs the way he hasn't since 2008, and Matt Kemp stops listening to people drool about his spectacular talent and actually starts to use it, it won't matter.

Why won't he make a difference? Because he's not Jason Werth?

We've got Jamey Carroll in LF right now! You're going to try to tell me that Jamey Carroll is better than someone hitting .309 with 30 SB? Come on, this is a great deal for us.

The Jamey Carroll that has a higher OBP than Podsednik?

In 60 games left of the season the difference between those two players will be minimal; only random variation will cause any major differences.

Excepptttt we didnt give up anything for pat and paying him the pro rated minimum. He doesnt even play everyday and he has done perfectly fine at the plate thank you very much.

I'm not saying it's not. But regardless, it's not like Podsednik is really an upgrade over the production from Manny and Carroll up to this point.

Not to mention if Pods takes even a slight hit in his BABIP, he becomes pretty ******. Despite his speed, he's an average to below average baserunner, with average defense (worse considering that's in LF), and despite 30 steals, his SB% isn't very good.

It's not a bad move, but basically insignificant.

Lucas May is nothing close to Carlos Santana. 25 year old catcher whose only good year has been this year, also doesn't have the high potential that Santana has. They're not even close in comparison. This trade was a win for the Dodgers, especially considering the fact that they've been playing utility infielder Jamey Carroll in LF. Scotty Pods is a beast, hopefully he gets playing time when Manny comes back.

any Giant fan on here who doesn't think Posednick is an upgrade to carroll or Paul is an idiot plain and simple..We aren't scoring runs right now so how does a .310 hitter with 30 stolen bases hurt us?? please explain smart guys

is he an upgrade to anderson and paul? yes. is he an upgrade to carroll? slightly.

he brings a defensive improvement to the OF over carroll, but offensively it is not a very big improvement.

carrol has an OBP of .379 (which is very good btw) with a walk rate of 13.4%. while he has a bit of a high BABIP (.339), his high walk rate will insure he still gets on base if/when his BABIP rate regresses towards his career average of .321. podsednick on the other hand has an OBP of .353, but is fueled more by is .347 BABIP (which is a big reason for his .310 average). He only walks 6.7% of the time, so if his BABIP regresses toward his career average (.322) he won't be able to rely on walks to get on base. Podsednicks speed is a bit overrated as he only has about a 70% stolen base rate.

In addition:
Pods-.336 wOBA, 106 wRC+, 1.2 WAR
Carrol- .327 wOBA, 104 wRC+, .9 WAR

all in all, i would say this is a good trade for the dodgers (depending on the minor leagures who i dont know much about), IF posednick can continue to keep a high BABIP. either way, if manny does not come back healthy for any extended amount of time, neither pods/carrol/paul/or anderson will be sufficient enough to make it to the playoffs.
