Carlos Quentin's career BABIP: .248
Quentin's BABIP in '09: .221
Quentin's BABIP in '10: .219

Does anyone have a good explanation for this? Is he pressing for homeruns, causing a FB% of 51, leading to bad contact and a LD% of just 14?

I don't know what to make of it. Is he unlucky and we should expect his .219 BABIP to go up, or is his BABIP derived from his approach at the plate?

This should probably go in the sabermetrics forum, and if the mods want to move it, so be it. Posted it in here because people check here more frequently and it would open more debate.

From watching him basically all year, his outs are popouts and his hits are either home runs or shanks. He probably is a little unlucky, but I don't think he will ever be a line drive hitter.

Add to this that he is an extreme streaky hitter. If he is on a hot streak he can carry a whole team and hit every pitch out of the ballpark.
But if not, the outcome of his at bats is limited to: walk, popup, strikeout

So his BABIP shouldn't increase by much.

He is a feast or famine hitter.

alot of "power hitters" suffer from this when they are slumping, don't they?
