View Full Version : Rockies Preparing To Be Sellers

A week ago, the Rockies looked like certain buyers, ready to possibly add a right-handed bat, a bullpen piece and possibly a starter.

No more.

While the Rockies have not decided to sell, they are preparing for the possibility, according to a source with knowledge of the club’s thinking.

For now, the Rockies remain very interested in trading for Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu. But they could move players such as outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, infielder Melvin Mora and first baseman/outfielder Brad Hawpe no matter which course they pursue.

The Rockies, losers of six straight games, are in fourth place in the NL West, eight games back, and in fifth place in the wild-card standings, five games back.

After getting swept four straight in Philadelphia, they have four games left, all at home, before Saturday’s non-waiver deadline - three against the Pirates, one against the Cubs.

If the Rockies continue to sputter, it’s possible they could also trade right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt, left-handed reliever Joe Beimel and possibly a starting pitcher – either right-hander Aaron Cook, who is under contract for $9.25 million next season, or left- hander Jorge De La Rosa, who is a potential free agent.

Hawpe has lost playing time, and the White Sox are looking into him as a possible alternative if they fail to land the Brewers’ Prince Fielder or Nationals’ Adam Dunn, a source said.http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/MLB-latest-news-from-July-070110

They're still contenders in my eyes, but they could certainly trade a few of those guys without compromising this year.

i wouldn;'t go full out seller, but some of these guys don't fit long term. if you can get something good, they should consider any deal

i never understand why some teams become sellers when they have guys locked up for next year. the rockies have had a lot of injuries and should just hold onto their team and buy in the offseason.

Guess this takes them out of the Cantu running... come to papa! LOL seriously though, I think they should try for the division, add a solid starter and go for it.

Well we all know Todd Helton isn't going anywhere ;)

Odd to see this from the Rockies after their recent 2nd half performances. 5 games in August isn't insurmountable. Trade some guys that may not fit long term but don't start off a fire sale and still look to improve.

Yes, please, sell sell sell.

I want to avoid their 25 game winning streak.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Rockies made an August run along w/ the Dodgers. I have a feeling the Giants and Pads have .500 ball written all over them.

I'd take Tulo off their hands :)

Makes sense. The two teams with the best two run differentials in the NL seem like .500 teams to me.

Projections also have them finishing at 94 and 92 wins, but yeah, .500 teams.

I think Hawpe is the only guy that they'll try to get rid of. He's not adding anything and the Rox are deep in the outfield. I could definitely see him get moved.

Well if they went about .500, FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, like my post originally implied... They would win about 88 and 90 games respectively. Smart guy.

Which Ironically, would be the same amount of wins the Giants had last year.

Wow, I didn't think of that. If the Yankees lost all their games they wouldn't make the playoffs.

Captain Obvious FTW?

I just came to make a point about the Rockies and how they always play well in the late portion of the season. Not to trade snide remarks. Besides with your post count I'm sure you have dozens and dozens of "cool" internet acronyms you can throw at me.

lol I didn't mean to come off like a douche like that, sorry.

I just don't see any substance in "Giants and Pads have .500 ball written all over them."

Obviously the Giants have a fantastic club, I just don't count out the Dodgers and the Rockies. All year I have questioned the Pads...I guess I will just keep eating my words all the way into September.

I wouldn't count them out either, but I'm definitely less worried about them than I was last year.

And I think the same thing about the Padres, but I still don't see .500 being more likely than above .500.

That's all I was saying.
