NEW YORK -- The NBA has fined Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn $50,000 for his comments about forward Michael Beasley's marijuana use.

The league also fined the Timberwolves organization $50,000 Friday for what it called inappropriate comments.

In an interview with 1500 ESPN Twin Cities, Kahn said the recently acquired Beasley used "too much marijuana" in the past but Minnesota's new power forward is maturing and was worth acquiring from Miami despite his off-court issues.

"He's a very young and immature kid who smoked too much marijuana and has told me that he's not smoking anymore," Kahn said in he interview, "and I told him that I would trust him as long as that was the case."

We all like to poke fun at Kahn, but this is ridiculous. Why the **** do you get fined for this?

Commissioner Stern is stern. Stern, but fair.

(on the real I don't agree with it.)

Stern needs to stop fining GM's and start fining referee's for the dumb **** they do.

Stupid fine, but I kind of see where it's coming from.

Maybe it's a fine for idiotic GM decisions but it's being disguised with the Beasley comments...

Stern is an idiot. He fines people for stupid ****. How does Ainge throwing a towel earn a fine? I know that's off-topic, but I had to vent.

 VERY dumb reason for a fine. He wasn't talking down on Beasley but speaking on his struggles and believing in him improving on it im confused on this one. Could he really be getting fined for comparing Dark to Webber and Stern just seen the tapes?

I guess that makes all the fines OK. I always thought they went to the player's association.

Lame fine, I mean this one is just ridiculous. Only reason I would think of is privacy, but not that Beasley has been private about his weed use.

Some one mentioned fair?!?? This is FAR from fair.

Personally I think it's the NBA's attempt at censoring anything to do with Marijuana. But this is just ridiculous. If anything, it will just bring more attention to it.

OK, Kahn clearly shows that smoking pot is a negative, which is a good image for the league... and that gets him fined? It's not like he was breaking news, not a single person in the entire world heard him say this and thought, "Holy ****, Michael Beasley and probably other NBA players smoke pot, I didn't see that coming."

Exactly... But has Beasley ever even been fined himself for this? And I mean in his career.. Not that I know of.

I say this as a potsmoker, if anyone should be fined it's the player for using it...

Wow, what is this? You can't say anything, that would in any way, make the NBA look bad or Stern will fine you 50 grand?

I just don't get why Kahn would say this. He called Beasley immature and said he USED to smoke weed. Why not keep quiet?

Well, to me it seemed like he was trying to commend and shed light on a pretty positive topic overall... Yes it brings up the topic of marijuana, which is obviously a negative thing for the league, but it's not like we as NBA fans didn't already know about Beasley's use... This was a good thing that Kahn did, bringing up the topic of the kid's maturity. He's 21 and has supposedly made the decision to stop the BS.. I hate the fine!!!

The fine has less to do with the content of the message rather than it's intent, which could be spun as libelous. The commish has his hands tied and had to issue a fine lest the union file a grievance...

How the hell could it be spun as libelous? Libel is by definition untrue or unjust, this is neither.

I'm not talking about a civil motion at all. How expensive do you think a grievance is in the NBA? You've got an arbitration hearing, lost time on part of multiple parties, and then you have whatever award is decided upon...

We live in a litigious society and professional sports are much more so. If Beasley turns to his union rep and says so much as "man, that hurt my feelings," you could be looking at at least $50,000 in expenses...

Can't talk about players doing unwholesome things.

It's right above dressing in street clothes at a press conference and right below criticizing the refs. Stern's NBA.
