BOSTON - In an email exchange with the Dallas Morning News this afternoon, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban clarified his interest in the Rangers' ownership situation. In short, he's more interested than at any point in the process; he's exploring possibilities and he's willing to pursue an alliance with either the Chuck Greenberg-Nolan Ryan partnership or another bidding group.

"What i tried to say is that now that the bankruptcy judge has clarified some of the [Tom] Hicks related issues, I have been taking a closer look. I think there is an opportunity to organize a bid for the team. Or if its feasible, or possible - and I don't know for sure if it is or isn't - to work with Chuck and Nolan and their group. I'm not trying to push anyone off or out. I'm exploring.

The economics have changed, which has gotten me interested. My lawyers are still going through everything , but the bigger point is that I now have an interest. As I learn more I will have a better understanding about how aggressively I will pursue the interest and whether or not I will actually make a bid come the first week of August or whenever the court sets the date for bids."

Greenberg could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon, but has met with Cuban before. They held some preliminary talks about Cuban joining a group headed by Mario Lemieux that sought to purchase the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins in 1999. Cuban ultimately did not join the group. Lemieux's group, advised by Greenberg, ultimately bought the club out of bankruptcy
and has since turned it into one of the NHL's model franchises.

Some of the recent rulings by bankruptcy judge D. Michael Lynn have seemed to minimize the debt that would have to be serviced post-sale. Among the recent events has been the decision to break the lease on the Rangers' charter jet, which Hicks owns. That reduces obligations by about $2.8 million, which Greenberg and Ryan have used to increase the value on their bid.

Has Cuban given up that the Mavs will ever become Champions?

If he buys them before free agency and everything works out I bet he out bids the Yankees for Lee. The rangers would start spending money and really be scary.

^^ Yeah, but if you had to choose between Texas and New York...

Plus, the Yanks no. 2 pitcher is AJ Burnett. This needs to be rectified with Lee.
