Derek Fisher: I'm Staying with the Lakers
16 minutes ago by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned Derek Fisher has officially decided to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers -- and the person who had the biggest impact on his decision was his friend and teammate Kobe Bryant.

Fisher tells TMZ, "I have decided to continue with Kobe, continue with our teammates and the fans of Los Angeles."

He adds, "While this may not be the most lucrative contract I've been offered this off season, it is the most valuable."

As we first reported, Fisher was being courted by LeBron James' new squad -- the Miami Heat -- but ultimately decided to stay in L.A.

"At the end of the day, there's one person I could not turn away from," Fisher tells us. "Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made. He and I have played together for 11 seasons, came into the league together as kids, and has been loyal to me even when others had doubts."

Those who thought he was actually leaving, were completely foolish btw. It would be idiotic for Fisher not to talk to other teams, he was trying to drive his price up.

Fisher may very well be the key to the 2011 championship. If he went to Miami, I would have picked the Heat to win it all not just for what he brings to the table, but what he would've taken off the table for the Lakers. As it turns out, the Lakers keep a key component and Miami is still searching for the right role players.

Glad to see him staying. he was a big part of the team last season so it'd be only right to try and get him re-signed. Wouldnt of wanted to see him anywhere else

Fisher is so full of himself. Im sure he thinks that he is more important to this team then he really is. He had three good games against the celtics. Im glad we resigned him, and I understand his leadership's importance. But puhleeaze, he's going to statistically hold this team back

What people are missing with this whole free agency craze are the players who are sacrificing cash to stay with their teams like Fish.

Its not something you see everyday in this age of greed in sports and its refreshing, good for him.

Derek Fisher has decided to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Credit Kobe Bryant with the assist.

"I have decided to continue with Kobe, continue with our teammates and the fans of Los Angeles," Fisher said in a statement. "While this may not be the most lucrative contract I've been offered this offseason, it is the most valuable. I am confident I will continue to lead this team on and off the court. Let the hunt for six begin."

The Lakers have won two straight titles and five in Fisher's tenure with the team. He gets a three-year deal to return, with a player option on the final year. Monetary terms were not immediately available.

Fisher, 35, had been courted by the Miami Heat. He met with Miami president Pat Riley and owner Micky Arison at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami on Saturday morning where the Heat told him it wanted him to be its starting point guard and to join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

"I took time to consider all my options, many not reported in the media," Fisher said. "I listened to every coach, every general manager, even potential teammates in order to make the right decision and I thank every one of them. At the end of the day, there's one person I could not turn away from.

"Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made. He and I have played together for 11 seasons, came into the league together as kids, and has been loyal to me even when others had doubts. We have won five championships together."

The Lakers had been in constant contact with Fisher and his representative Rob Pelinka since the free-agent negotiating period opened on July 1, although negotiations had proceeded slowly but amicably.

Fisher averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 assists per game last season, but he stepped up with some big shots in the playoffs, especially against the Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Wanted to point out a few things that jumped off of the page to me. Glad that Fisher returned and he will retire a Laker.

Kobe and Fish BFF.:D

Welcome back Dfish, the hunt for 6 has officially begun. His leadership to the Lakers has been very valuable, and I'm glad the Lakers didn't under estimate what he brought to the table.

No surprise here... Phase 2 complete now on to a back-up big and a key vet presence on the bench and we will be all set to go.
