The Dallas Mavericks are determined to make it difficult for free agent Udonis Haslem to easily return to the Miami Heat.

The Mavs have offered a contract believed to be a minimum of three years and $20 million, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Mavericks have offered Haslem their full midlevel exception starting at $5.85 million this season, a league source said.

The Heat are trying to re-sign Haslem to play with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, but salary-cap restraints could leave them with as little as $4.3 million a year to pay him. And thatís assuming the Heat signs free agent Mike Miller starting at $4.9 million.

Haslem, who made $7 million last season, has been a consistent defender and rebounder for the Heat, and president Pat Riley has been determined to keep him. He averaged 10 points and eight rebounds in seven seasons with Miami.

New Jersey has shown interest in Haslem but hasnít made a formal offer. Haslem shares the same agent as Wade and Bosh, and has expressed a strong desire to return to the Heat.

He's from Miami right, I don't know if he leaves, but he'd have to take a paycut too.

Good move for Dallas.

And I don't know why people think he's not leaving, He has been involved in every trade rumor Miami has been in since he's been there.

If any team has underrated him it's Miami.

If Haslem were to depart, it would be somewhat of a setback for us in terms of assimilating a respectable bench. There aren't any other FA PF's on the board with Haslem's talent. I do think he would fit in nicely in Dallas. I really hope he'll take a little less and stay in Miami. It's tough though when you aren't making the max. The paycut hits him much harder than the big 3. Haslem is a soldier though and I hope he stays.

I think they had to renounce his rights (along with QRich, Dorrell Wright, Jermaine O'Neal, etc) in order to free up cap space to sign LeBron and Bosh.

But they did S&T for both Bosh and LeBron, so they wouldnt need to renounce any of their players:confused:

Good deal for the Mavs, I doubt Haslem takes it though he seems set on staying in Miami.

Needs to happen for 2 reasons:

1. Dallas overpays for a guy who is not their missing piece
2. Miami doesn't get to keep a guy very valuable to their title hopes.

He's pissed. A man with too much money, guided by his emotions. I'm not surprised. Haslem wouldn't be bad value at that dollar figure though.

Those players have to be traded into cap space. Haslem, JO etc have cap holds associated with them, because they're bird free agents. Unless those rights are renounced, there is no cap space to trade into.

Miami renounced the bird rights of Joel Anthony.

Miami can offer him about 30% of that amount. He's out. MIA's gonna have no bigs...looks like you need 4 max contracts if you want to get out of the East Pat :D

no. they actually retained his rights and the rights to match any outside offer...

we may have had to renounce haslems rights though since his hold was pretty large...

nonetheless i'm convinced there is a loophole of some kind that will allow haslem to get paid here. and i do know if we were to re-sign him to a one year deal we would be able to give him a lucrative deal using his bird rights next year.

We can offer about 2/3. starting around 4 million with 10% raises vs their 8

Miami renounced the bird rights of Joel Anthony.

Actually they extended him a QO so they can match any offer presented to him. They have kept his bird rights.

My bad. 2 minutes too late

Wrong. All they can offer him is the veterans min this year (next offseason they could use his Bird rights though--if the new CBA will allow that)

Heats owner is waaay richer than Mark Cuban. Haslems from Miami, Arison can just send a messenger to his house with a suitcase holding 5 Million under the table if he chooses to come back and play for the only team he has ever rooted for his whole life.

If it's only a couple mil, I can't see Haslem passing up a chance at multiple rings.

Or Haslem can sign for the minimum, team up with the mafia, and earn millions while throwing big games. Either way works :D

He can make just over $1M this year with MIA. He can make about $20M over three years with DAL.

WHERE DO THE MAVS GET ALL THE MONEY?

I hope that that the Mavs pick him up. i dont see the Heat offering him anything close to that.

Haslem would be a nice 25-30 minute player behind Dirk and Haywood, and brings a defensive toughness we need.

LMAO at people saying that would be overpaying him. You seriously have no grasp of NBA contracts, what do you expect him to play for? Less than the MLE?
