View Full Version : Reinsdorf: 'I think we'll be better' than Heat

Jerry Reinsdorf doesn't have LeBron James, but he does still have a sense of humor.

"I forgot to watch TV last night," the Bulls' chairman said Friday in a phone interview. "Anything happen?"

What happened, of course, is that James spurned the Bulls to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. But Reinsdorf said he has no regrets about the Bulls' free-agency pursuits and disputed a report the Bulls refused to meet James' personal demands during their July 3 sitdown in Cleveland.

"He didn't ask for special privileges except for us to hire his trainer," Reinsdorf said. "And we said yes to that. That was it. We certainly didn't say no to anything.

"Look, what these players did was follow a dream, which is their absolute right. They took less money to play together. And LeBron would've made so much more money off the court playing in Chicago than he will in Miami. But they're following a dream. I respect that.

"I also think we're a better team than Miami right now, assuming we get a shooting guard. Of course, with LeBron we would've been a great team. Without him, we're still going to be a very good team. If you look at the Miami roster with these three guys but not much else, I think we'll be better next year."

Reinsdorf said his favorite moment from the Bulls' free-agent pursuits was watching James and new coach Tom Thibodeau talk basketball. James praised Thibodeau during Thursday night's announcement special.

"The interplay between those two was particularly enjoyable," Reinsdorf said. "They had a great basketball discussion. I was really impressed with Thibodeau.

"I enjoyed the process, not only with LeBron but with everybody else. We made great presentations."

Wade met with the Bulls twice over 30 hours on July 1 and 2 and many have speculated Wade only did so disingeniously.

"I don't think he was," Reinsdorf said. "All along, his preference was to go back to Miami; I don't doubt that. But at some point, he was concerned LeBron wasn't going to go there and he would end up all alone. And he considered us seriously as a backup. I got the impression that we were under serious consideration, both from Dwyane and his representative."

Ultimately, the Bulls landed two-time All-Star power forward Carlos Boozer, who was to be introduced Friday afternoon at the Berto Center. Boozer left a Cavaliers franchise led by then-general manager Jim Paxson -- who is now a Bulls' consultant -- under controversial circumstances when the franchise accused him of reneging on a verbal commitment to join the Jazz.

"Thibodeau wanted Boozer over (Chris) Bosh," Reinsdorf said. "He was ecstatic when we got him.

"And we've talked about trading for Boozer over the last few years and Jim always encouraged us to get him if we could."

In other news, the Bulls acquired a 2011 second-round pick after completing a sign-and-trade of Hakim Warrick to the Suns.

The Bulls will be very good next year. They have a much better team than the Heat have but they need to get another solid defensive minded guard who can shoot. Rose is going to keep getting better and better and Noah and Boozer compliment each other perfectly.

I wish we had Hinrich still. He used to shut Wade down.

Now all we have is the Lebron stopper in Deng and the Bosh stopper in Noah.

The Bulls have made some pretty good moves themselves this summer. If they get Korver and Redick, thats pretty impressive.

Rose
Korver/Redick
Deng
Boozer
Noah

Taj
Johnson

This team is very talented, but most of all they'll play terrific defense...thanks to Thibideau.

Do they have the best chance of dethroning the proposed kings of South Beach? IMO, Miami still has to beat Boston, Orlando, and Chicago to prove their worth... and Chicago has a very good team coming in next year. More offense than last year, with likely better defense (which was already good last year)

sure, you can say "ball hogs" then you look at the USA olympic team and saw how no one was a ball hog and everyone shared the ball perfectly. olympic team had the biggest "ball hogs" on that team and yet it all worked out fine didn't it, if I recall correctly.

most of the PSD Bulls fans think they are the best team in the East ROFL

so it didn't start now, it started well before the big 3 got together.

Lets face it, they have trouble scoring.

Their defence is above par, but not the greatest. Noah is not going to improve on his scoring now that Boozer is here --> Noah's stats are going to decline cuz of Boozer, who demands the ball a ton of times more than Brad Miller ever will.

Rose better work on his three point shooting cuz there is another ball hog on the team as well now.

Uhmm...and what can Miami's center do? Noah averaged 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks last year and is only getting better. Are you expecting that out of a 2nd round draft pick? If you get that, everyone else in the league is done.

I'm not trying to say the Bulls are going to be the best in the East, and never have been (and I realize this post wasn't directed at me personally). The Bulls are 1 of 4 teams who will contend for the East. It's impossible to rank them right now. They haven't even completed free agency, let alone play a game. I have no clue what order those top 4 teams will finish in. You can make a case for any of them.

Well, the Bulls will be athletic, defensive-minded, unselfish, and young. They will be amazing on the glass and will be able to shoot with the best of them, along with going inside and outside. The Heat need to still sign more players. We don't know who will fill out the rest of that roster outside of the big 3, Miller, Chalmers, and their draft picks. Miami may have problems off the bench, but, their starting lineup will most definetely compete. We'll see, a lot of the hype is more toward Miami right now. If Miami can finish the offseason and go into next season with just an ok bench, they'll be the better team. If their bench is just a bunch of scrubs, the Bulls will be right there.

Chicago's size and rebounding ability will give the Heat problems. They have a perimeter scoring threat now to compliment Rose and Boozer and Rose is likely going to continue to improve... and he's already a top five point guard in the league... and only 21.

The Bulls are top five in scoring and top five in defense and top five in rebounding this season... mark my words. One of the best all around teams in the league. Unless the Heat can put quality players around the 3 All-Stars they have... they won't be better than Boston, Orlando, or Chicago... let alone LA. Derek Fisher is crazy if he goes to the Heat instead of trying for a 3 peat in LA.

if ur talking about 48 wins yea i agree but not #2 seed material like 55-60 wins. im hoping for around 30 wins for the nets

Where close to the type of team the the Pistons had in the 80's. Build around a driving dishing PG with outside shooters and tough rebounder defenderds inside. Still need a Defensive guard off bench, Brewer, and another down low guy, B.Miller. We also got alot of picks next year to work with to see what we can do next year to fill in more wholes with better youngers, we have enough picks to trade up next year.

The bulls were the best rebounding team in the league last season and they just added a top 10 rebounder.

They got 2 lights out shooters, Rose is only going to get better am expecting 24/7 Noah is a 11/11 guy who continues to improve.

If with the remaining amount of money they get a tony allen or ronnie brewer for defense resign brad miller that team could win 60 games and give both Orlando and Miami a run for there money

We are a better TEAM but the Heat have better players. Bulls will be the polar opposite of the Heat.

Bulls: Gritty, ball control, agressive D, Rebounding. hard working - The identity of their fan base

Heat: finesse, no down low, 3 EXTREMLY GREAT players playing 48 a night. pretentious - identity of thier fan base.

the bulls will run 9-10 deep of pure quality nba players to compliment the Studs like Rose, Noah, Boozer and even Deng to a degree. I want a piece of Miami BAD. I know we can beat them up in areas where they will be weak. Grit-City baby!!!!

most of the PSD Bulls fans think they are the best team in the East ROFL

so it didn't start now, it started well before the big 3 got together.

If anything, Noah and everyone else (other than Taj Gibson) should improve statistically by Boozer's being there. He's going to draw attention from Noah, Rose, and Deng because teams know he demands attention inside. Noah will still get his points because he didn't get them from designed plays anyway and Boozer being there won't affect that either way. He'll still get his boards becaue he's a damn good rebounder.

Lol, Noah is the perfect fit next to Boozer. It is generally a good idea to pair a PF who can score with a defensive center who can do the dirty work down low and make up for that lack of defense (assuming you don't have an elite big who is dominant on both ends).

Not really got 21 year old top 5 PG, got a great rebounding center, top 8 alaround PF, Deng not great but good alaround SF, Redick is a good def real good shooting SG. Gibson was the best PF drafted last year(Blake will probally make him the 2nd best now). Korvor can shot but I hate his def. We still got cap room. We have a few extra picks next year can be used in trade to move up in draft or for trade for players or just draft, point is more picks more options. We've played 2 top teams the last 2 years in tough playoff series. Every body but Boozer-28, korver-29 are 25 or under. Thats makes a nice long run possible. I think thats got to make our immedaite and long term future look better than at least 27 teams in the league.

Why should we have to beat Chicago to prove our worth? We were better than them last year and our roster improvent is far greater than theres and we're only getting started.

To tell you the truth. I was talking to a friend today. I believe the bulls would have surpassed the Lakers with the addition of Wade or Lebron. I still feel the addition of Boozer and Korver put the Bulls within the top three of the eastern conference (Magic,Heat,Bulls --- No specific order) But in my opinion the bulls should be the most exciting team to watch. Excellent PG, Energetic C, Superb PF, Defensive SF, and 3 point specialist Korver. I love it. Im a Nets Fan btw.

Rose better work on his three point shooting cuz there is another ball hog on the team as well now.

Thibs will help improve their defense, a lot better than what Vinny did with the team. And Noah can improve, he has the potential and adds a great energy to the team. Rebounds, also, allow the team more chances to score. Bulls led the NBA last year & now add Boozer. And I didn't know Boozer was a ball hog. Seems like a lot of his points come from pick & rolls and put backs. Thibs will spread the ball throughout the whole team just like it was in Boston.

Better than Miami? No one knows til we see how they play together. The Bulls have Improved a lot though with the new additions. You can't go wrong with Miami's squad but no one knows how they'll do with three great players set on the roster and not much else. I do have to say this about James and Wade and Bosh. I lost respect for these guys. None of this has been professional. To have a televised show on your decision for where to go, and have this celebration like they won a championship? Idk what the NBA is coming to.
