Girardi agrees to terms on new contract

Steady defenseman will begin his fifth season with Rangers this fall
Friday, 07.09.2010 / 11:29 AM / News

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Dan Girardi on a new contract.

Girardi, 26, skated in 82 games with the Rangers this season, registering six goals and 18 assists for 24 points, along with 53 penalty minutes. He was one of four Rangers to skate in all 82 games, and has played in 280 consecutive games, ranking ninth in the NHL among active streaks. He led the team and ranked sixth in the NHL with 180 blocked shots, tied for second on the Rangers with 178 hits, ranked second in average icetime (21:29) and third with a plus-nine rating at home.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent, defenseman Dan Girardi has had a big impact on the Rangers over the 280 consecutive games that he has played since his NHL debut in January 2007.
Girardi ranked second among team defensemen and ninth on the Rangers overall in even strength scoring, registering 19 of his 24 points at even strength, and he ranked third among club blueliners in goals and points, and fourth in assists.

The Rangers posted a record of 4-1-0 when Girardi tallied a goal. Girardi tied his career-high with a three-game assist/point streak from December 16 vs. the NY Islanders to December 19 at Philadelphia (three assists), and he recorded his first career multi-goal game with two goals on October 12 vs. Toronto. On October 3, Girardi skated in his 200th career NHL game, registering one assist and a plus-three rating vs. Ottawa at Madison Square Garden.

A veteran of four NHL seasons, Girardi posted his finest offensive output during the 2007-08 season, establishing career-highs in goals (10), assists (18), points (28), power play goals (five) and shots (147). His 10 goals tied for 20th in the NHL among defensemen, and he ranked second among team blueliners in goals, assists, points and power play goals.

Girardi also tallied a career-high, three playoff assists in 10 contests in 2008, recording his first NHL post-season point with a shorthanded assist on the game-winning goal in Game One of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup vs. New Jersey on April 9 at Prudential Center. Earlier that season, Girardi notched his first career NHL goal with a power play tally on October 18 at Atlanta.

The 6-2, 215-pounder has skated in 280 career NHL games with the Rangers, registering 20 goals and 60 assists for 80 points, along with 128 penalty minutes. As a rookie in 2006-07, he tied for ninth in the NHL among first-year players with a plus-seven rating, having posted a plus or even rating in 28 of 34 games following his recall from Hartford (AHL) on January 25, 2007.

The Rangers completed their 2006-07 campaign registering a 19-9-6 record with Girardi in the lineup. Girardi tallied his first career point with a two-assist performance on February 17, 2007 vs. Philadelphia, and made his NHL debut on January 27, 2007 at Philadelphia. In addition, Girardi has recorded three assists and 16 penalty minutes in 27 career playoff contests.

The Welland, Ontario native signed as a free agent with the Rangers on July 1, 2006.

I think Dan is a solid but not spectacular Dman. I'd like him as a 2nd pair or 3rd pair dman. He did step up physically in the later parts of the season. I hope he continues that style of play. Does anyone know the contract details?

2.5 would sound fair to me. If we can keep both Girardi and Staal for around 6-6.5 mill total I think we will have come out of this in a decent place.

I think we have almost 10 mill in cap space before Dan's contract. 16 mill if Wade is demoted.

He seemed to learn from that. Its not like he was afraid to step in. He just over thought things and didnt want to be ejected from the game as a 3rd man in with the situation they were in.

Dan did play more physical and was also willing to fight in the latter part of the season.

4 years 13.3 million..... Seems a bit much but if you look what other defenseman got this year its not a crazy high price...i guess.

first off sometimes you g2 let pple fight for himself. Whether or not he's our big star. Gabs actually put up a fight until carcillo put huis weight into it. Gabs I highly doubt cared, plus your right it was a learning process. I'm glad though we resigned him, I rather have him as a defender than any of the other FA defenders. He is a hard hitter, he's well rounded and when partnered with staal they shut down high powered offenses. Plus I'm glad we can keep the chemistry, if anything he's probavly tradeable. And yea anything higher than 3 mil per year I'd be upset at Sather.

Sharks offer-sheeted Hjarlmarrson and he signed for 4 yrs, $14 mil. Not sure Blackhawks can afford to match. Sharks would give up a 1st and 3rd.

I read that even if the 'hawks match, SJ might offer sheet Niemi. Nothing like kicking a conference rival when they're down in cap hell.

Girardi is a solid player but I wouldnt have minded seeing him traded to fill a bigger need like center. We have a logjam on D with a bunch of young guys knockin on the door ready to go and I think Girardi could have brought back a decent return.

No doubt Sly,He was big time on my "poop" list and it is usually very hard to get off that list(not that I would ever hold a grudge)LOL.
Towards the end of the season I remember him really stepping up his physical play and sticking up for his teammates. In my opinion there is almost nothing worse in sports than not sticking up for your teammates.

Is it me or would people rather have signed Volchenkov for less then a mill more?

Isca92

commonsense, it would be nice but that's 1 million less for Staal or scoring.

We still have enough cap room for Staal to sign and if we demote Redden we dont have cap issues at all. Plus its not hard to tweak less then a mill in cap.

girardi has more than 175 hits and 175 blocks. hes a physical player.

Commonsense, I agree about Redden but I just don't think Sather's gonna do it. Redden is not worth his money but 23 million is alot to send to the minors. Plus your ending his career. If he was bought out that would allow him to sign a cheap deal some place else. For instance we all liked Prospal but would we have liked him at 3 years at 3.5 a year like he was getting?

So if he was bought out it would be like 1.9 for the next 8 years. Thats alot, if that was the plan we probably would have heard about it. Thats why I say Redden is here for 2 more years, when he can be bought out in 2 years have a cap hit of 1.67 for 4 years. This is a cheaper buyout, it gets the cap hit out less then the first buyout, its just what I think is gonna happen. I hope Sather proves me wrong on this.

Girardi and staal are both overrated players, all girardi is doing now is blocking he youngr players. I just don't see the upside with him. He's decent at best

I really dont understand how you can say both girardi and staal are both overated players. They both play against the top lines of some of the most explosive teams in the nhl and do pritty well. Both are young and have played hard everynight. They are also some of the most durable players I have ever seen. Niether player missed a game last year If I am correct. They block shots, both play descent physical games as well. I dont know where you are coming from in saying they are blocking prospects from coming up. If I stand correct there are other D positions that all ranger fans want to clear up in redden and rosival. With Sangs gone and McDonagh or however u spell it signed. I believe redden is blocking him from getting a spot. MDZ, Staal, Girardi are a must have for a young building team.

I believe with girardi by now is what you see is what you get. He had a lot of hits last year, blocks a ton of shots, just a little shy of Volchenkov. In no way does he block our young players from coming up. He has a descent shot and plays a well all around game.

I really miss tyutin beast. In fact on every nhl game I play I always trade rosival and a few high picks and grab tyutin. One of my fav defensmen. Thats why I always hated zherdev.

they are both physical, calm with the puck, and dont make many mistakes at all... seeing them make a mistake is like the sighting of a rare white elk lol... they arent flashy by any means but they are both very very solid, just like tyutin wus and thats y we love them
