View Full Version : Open letter from Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers

My biggest problem with Bron is how he made this into an entire fiasco dragging everyone along for his own amusement. It was all completely pointless, and imo Extremely disrespectful to NBA fans who have followed the game for the love of the sport.

According to ESPN, LeBron didn't bother to speak with Gilbert in person before bolting. I'm not saying that he has to, but generally speaking, it would have been the right thing to do to simply sit down with the owner face to face and give your thanks and goodbyes. But that's just me.

narcissism.. it's in Dan's letter.

Personally, I went back and forth on predicting his decision the last two days because of this. I thought, like Doug Thonus, that there was no way he wasn't going back to Cleveland after announcing a 1 hour special.. But then, we found out he was only giving owners notice 5 minutes before the announcement. If your idea of a courtesy call is 5 minutes prior to a decision then who are we dealing with? Who the hell, does either of those things?

I never would have thought that.. honestly, but you're right.

It's grimy on so many levels. What Lebron did to Cavs fans and also his part (along with Wade and Bosh) in this free agency circus. At worst, it's collusion.. at best, he seriously wasted the time and resources of the teams trying to recruit him.

Leaving was bad enough, but an hour long, attention whore way to do it was a slap in the face.

I am not complaining that the Heat got LeBron, I personally wanted him to stay in Cleveland, because I personally feel Wade and LBJ will play to like 75% of their full ability now, but he was more than a player to that city.

The fan base grew BECAUSE of Lebron and Ill be laughing my *** off when those bandwagon fans jump off.

I dont agree with the way Lebron handled the situation at all. Regardless, Gilberts letter is classless, tasteless, and one of the most unprofessional thing i have ever seen. He is the owner of a franchise, and although i would expect nothing but enthusiamsm for his team, making a letter wishing failure towards a person only reflects the quality of that organization itself.

If Dwayne Wade were to leave i as a fan would be extremely upset but i would never expect nor condone that type of reaction/behavior from a professional organization. Saying karma will get him? this is a buisness first and foremost players and owners BOTH should understand this. The organization didnt care about Zeke's feelings when they traded him away, a staple of that franchise through ups and downs. Yes they luckly got him back, but that was in no way a certainty.

Good for Gilbert. I think he just says what just about every sane person was thinking. This self absorbed SOB just played his home town like a bunch of fools. He dragged this out for his own benefit and ego and showed absolutely no class. If he wanted to leave Cleveland, fine. Just quietly sign a contract with Miami and write a one page add in the Cleveland paper thanking all the fans for their support and acknowledge that he knows he broke their heart but its just something he had to do.

Instead, he makes a joke of the NBA by parading these teams into an office building in Cleveland and then has the nerve to make an ESPN special out of this. I hope he gets hurt in Miami and never does anything. He's certainly no Magic, Bird, and absolutely no Jordan.

And I'm actually not that upset my Bulls didn't get him after all this nonsense.

Classless owner IMO. Aquisitions aside, i love my teams owners and FO class acts through and through.

You guys got one of the best people in the 2003 draft kept him, won a championship with him and never traded for any bad contracts past 2010. Lucky, or well run? You decide.

I agree 100%. He's acting like a childish fan, not the owner of an NBA franchise.
We have no idea what went on behind closed doors, so to say Gilbert is acting like a "childish fan" is just wrong. Maybe LeBron screwed them even more than it appears?

tough for Cleveland LBJ played everyone.......the three had this in mind for a while which I think should be tampering of some sorts:confused:

I agree. This is definitely tampering in my book. These guys made it a bit obvious that they wanted to play on the same team. Watching LBJ with his little candyass smile on his face saying "oh I'm going to play with Miami" just pretty much served as a spit in all of our faces. We all thought this would be one blockbuster free agency offseason, but all it was, was a charade. It was all a setup. It was all ********. Lebron got that precious little time to only confirm what ESPN had been saying all day, that he was going to Miami. I mean yeah come on.

This will all backfire, trust me on this.

You're so pathetic. Can't you juts rejoice in the fact that your team is going to be a monster. But like a child, you have to come here crying for attention.

I for one, HATE Cleavland and it's fans. I absolutely detest them, and their ring-less king. However, even I think this whole spectacle was a d*** move by LeElbow.

I personally am in SHOCK at the actions of the Cavs owner. This letter is a disgusting and immature spite at a player that had given that city alot of hope and wins. It was not Lebrons fault his idiot team couldn't get any other players to support him. It's not Lebrons fault he went out and traded/signed crappy veterans that are not counting as millions towards the salary cap that makes it impossible for them to put together a winning tandem. The Cavaliers should have sat down 3 YEARS AGO and talked with Lebron about what he wanted. BUILT the team around him. This ****** should have realized that Lebron wanted to have these other few core players around him. Hell, he should have brought Bosh and Wade to CLEVELAND, not the other way around. Don't post some *****y pissy letter on your website because your bitter your a crappy owner for a crappy *** team. You just doomed your entire franchise because you made stupid decisions before and couldn't get good core players to build around Lebron. Its HIS fault Lebron left, and more power to Lebron. That isnt the point. My argument is based on Gilberts letter, he made statements in which i would personally frown upon if they came from my teams ownership or FO. Instead of reassuring fans and showing the upmost confidence in his team, it was a letter written out of rage, fear, and hate, taking personal shots at a player for making a buisness decision. and IMO it is completely unexeptable from any professional much less an owner of an NBA franchise.

Lebron is a douche and I couldn't agree with the letter more. Lakers didnt win a ring with Malone, Payton, Bryamt and Shaq so I see the same thing happening here. **** aint gonna work. I think if Lebron would have went to the Knicks they would have had a better team then what Miami has. They are going to have to fill out there roster with D Leaguers. Orlando is going to do something to improve, Celtics got Oneal and have retained Pierce so they are going to be tough, I like the direction the Hawks have been going. If Lebron would have just left then I would still dislike him him but I would have lost all respect I had for him. He is a great player but he is too self centered. Win something then run your mouth. He probably feels like he has been pissed on, and just said **** it let me tell you about the real Lebron than none of you get to see when he isn't in front of the cameras. Agreed. But did Lebron ever bash Cleveland? No. Gilbert needs to shut his mouth and learn how to run a team. You have a once in a lifetime player, you get him pieces to make it work. Jordan got Pippen and Rodman. Kobe got Gasol. Heck, even Pierce got Allen and Garnett. Gilbert needed to get Lebron what he wanted to win a championship but he didn't and now he has to deal with the aftermath.
Also, Cleveland went from the damn lottery to an Eastern Conference powerhouse nearly every year from 06-this year. Lebron saved that franchise and brought Cleveland some national spotlight time. in all honesty, they'd be lucky to win one. they would be abused by dwight if they don't get a defensive minded center. the big 3 in boston was anchored by possibly the second best defensive center in the league. i dont know if a team like miami has won like that before. they lack a true pg and c, but are extremely athletic. team chemistry will be a huge problem. if they dont win in 2 years, i bet one of them demands a trade.

He wanted Jamison, they got him. They put the pieces around "the best in the nba" and "the King" couldn't get the job done.

That is considered choking in the playoffs to you? What the F do you want him to do? Score 50 points per game, 15 boards and 12 assists per game? He played his heart out and his stats speak for themselves. It's not his fault that he was forced to do everything by himself because Mo Williams went cold in the playoffs.
Also, to everyone who is b****ing about talking to other free agents. They are FREE agents meaning they can sign wherever they want. They can talk to each other and make decisions that are mutually beneficial. Also, these guys are actually friends off the court so IMO that could make the chemistry build up a lot faster

I swear if Cleveland wins a championship before LeBron, I'll gives Gilbert all the props, but, to me this letter shows no class at all. The Cleveland fan base should be ashamed of what Gilbert did, not promoting it. Now, I've always been a Celtics fan, but, I grew up in Florida and I can tell you now that LeBron (as well as Bosh) is going to get every bit the support a player could ever expect. Floridians crave championship caliber basketball. They're going to be one of the best teams for many years to come. Who would ever have thought that three starting Gold Medalists would be starting for the same NBA team?

And those of you that are hating on LeBron for dragging it out and making a big deal out of his free agency. Guess what? It is a big deal. I guarantee if Michael Jordan had been willing to leave Chicago in his prime, we would have seen just about the same thing.

Even if you STILL think LeBron was just being a prima donna, just look at the people that benefited the most out of it. Fans of 6 teams had something to hope and cheer for in the offseason, and gave all us PSDers something to talk about. More importantly, all the proceeds from ESPN's show went to the Boys and Girls Club. Whine and complain if you must, but the Boys and Girls Club is a great organization and I can't put a number on it, but, I guarantee there were millions of viewers, each of us a percentage that went to them.

I will be very interested to see if Cleveland now boos LeBron like Toronto does Carter, and am very interested to see how long the boos last, and what the reaction of all other fans in the league will be as time goes on.

I think Gilbert is the man and addresses a feeling he has and shares with every Cleveland Cavs fan. But this is a great post. I mean in the end, it is helping the kids. Maybe that outweighs how LeBron DIDNT help the Cavs.

But I disagree with the fanbase argument.

I think LeBron's publicity stunt was deplorable, but Gilbert's lapse in judgment today is equally sad, if not worse.

As far as Cleveland winning a ring before LeBron? OK. :)

I am not mad as a lebron fan about going to south beach, but what really ticked off is the way he handled the whole thing. He basically slapped the Cavs in the face, what happened to the common courtesy of telling them face to face with out the whole circus. I lost respect for James and as a true fan of the game of prof basketball I really hope these 3 never win a title so that their brilliant plan fails big time in their faces. I hope all the up and coming teams in the next 2-3 year and the current strong NBA teams beats the living crap out of the Heat ..

current strong NBA teams
Lakers
Celtics
Magic
Mavs
Spurs
Hawks
Blazers
Bulls
Up and coming soon to be strong NBA teams
Bucks
Thunder
Kings
76rs
Clippers
Rockets
Nets

All of you unite and.. ATTACK!...............................> HEAT :burn:

I appluad Dan Gilbert for calling out Lebron for being a ***** and leaving Cleveland. lebron quit on that team big time and really **** all over that organization.

The fact that he had to call a conference and say he was leaving in front of all of Cleveland was just a slap in the face. He really screwed over that team.

Props for Gilbert calling Lebron out on what he truly is. A *****

I'm kinda surprised and impressed by such a tongue lashing.

With LeBron gone and Shaq off the books the Cavs have as much money to spend as anybody. What Gilbert is saying is that he's is going to spend more money now than he ever did while LeBron was in town? Interesting.

I dont blame Lebron for leaving, because I thought he should, but the way he did it was wrong. He wanted the spotlight to on him. Wade, Bosh, Amare or Johnson didnt have a Press Confrence for their decision, but he had to be the guy to do it. It shows that he's selfish, but at least people can lay off Kobe for a while.

If LeBoo even plays in those games, by the sound of Gilberts letter he's going to sign Rick Mahorn, Bill Laimbeer, John Salley and Dennis Rodman, First one to take Leboo's knees out gets a raise.

I can't wait for this game. I doubt Lebron even acknowledges the letter by Gilbert, rather just go off against the Cavs. I'm predicting 39 pts, 7 assists, and 8 rebounds in the 4 games against Cleveland. I hope after each of those games he flips off Dan Gilbert.

he may not be that far off about wining a title before Lebron. People make is seem the heat will win the title for the next 10 years. The Lakers have 3-4 championship years. Orlando still has that monster in Dwight. Boston has 1-2 good years. The Bulls are on the rise. The Thunder. There are some very good teams. The Heat will eventually win a title with that trio but it may not be as soon as everyone thinks. But, the Cavs need to pull some magic tricks in the next 3-5 years because during those years the Heat may have just one their title.

As a Knicks fan i agree with u that gilberts rant was out of line for a person of his position, but lebron doesn't deserve to be cut any slack. miami is wade's team, and bosh was going nowhere in toronto, but lebron was on a team he revived and led to the best record the past 2 yrs. he proved that he is a coward and a primadonna the way this whole free angency was handled, and as the game's best player, he chose to ride wade and boshes coattails rather than reestablish his legacy as the man in cleveland, chicago, or new york. your man kobe will always be better than lebron. i feel sorry for cleveland since they kissed his *** for seven years only to be stabbed in the back.

I didn't like LeBron's choice because I think if LBJ would've gone to NY there would have been some good battles in the NBA. But this hating on LBJ is out of control.

Did anyone notice some the question and how he got caught in a lie? I don't remember the exact word for word questions, but I will give you a outline of them and his answers.

Q. When did you make up your mind
A. When I woke up this morning

Q. Was the plan all along to go play in Miami
A. ( quick grin on his face ) I am just glad to get a chance to play in Miami

Tie that all in with getting you own special and announcing to the world that your are leaving an organization and fan base that gave you he world. Regardless of what anyone thought the Cavs tried to improve their team and he was a hero and legend in their eyes. He lied and was caught in his speech and it was over looked. Those 3 had this plan from the beginning and and every organization that was involved was just strung along through all the Documentary filming and hour long special only for the most classes guy in sports to spit in the face of the Cleveland fans and organization. Many people may say he didn't owe them anything, but they didn't deserve that.

lebron holding an hour long slap in the face to cleveland is?

Look at all he was able to get tonight for doing this hour-long special.....he got how many dollars and how many full-tuition scholarships for kids who wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise....? Yes, it may have hurt Cleveland but it has the potential to help a whole lot more. Hard to blame the guy for taking advantage of the benefits he knew he could get for him, and more importantly others with this.
