It's not a big deal. It's one pitch. There are hundreds of pitches in a game. Umpires are human. You can complain about other calls, but balls and strikes is not anything to get your panties in a bunch over. Plus, I know how hard it is to call a game. You have to give the ump's a break. This really has nothing to do with stats, at all. This has to do with it being one pitch.

Except that it was an extremely bad call. Three inches low is still quite bad. And the other one was 3 inches outside. Those are bad calls.

Yeah, it wasn't literally a foot off the plate, but bad calls are bad calls.

The Strike Zone is expanded on the lower end, moving from the top of the knees to the bottom of the knees.

The strike zone is plainly the bottom of the knees. Not three inches below.

"The Strike Zone is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the top of the knees. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball."

The strike zone is not 3 inches below the top of the knees. It is just plainly the top.

It's actually not the top of the knee, it's the knee. Which means that call is not as bad as you think it is. But seriously, these aren't bad calls. You just think they are. But you clearly are too hard headed to get it, so whatever. I'm gone.

Doog, have you ever umpired? I've umpired every level minus professional. 3 inches is nearly impossible to tell.

Those pitches were easily close enough, and with the break on the ball, were bad, but not horrendous calls. There's a big difference between bad and horrendous. And bad calls, especially if consistent, which, in this case, it was, is okay.

Not to mention, why the **** argue it? We suck. This team is awful. They're an 85 loss team no matter how you slice it. The more we lose, the better pick we get.

I've had similar discussions here before, and have been greeted similarly.

Fact is, they are paid to make calls, preferably the right ones. Strike zones shouldn't deviate from umpire to umpire, but they do. I think an effort should be made to hold the umpires more accountable based on pitch f/x data.

I'm not saying it's an easy job, but neither is hitting a 90+ MPH slider...especially one 3-4 inches outside.

Efforts are made, there have been umpire rating systems in place for years before pitch f/x was around.

The reality is that the best umpires do not seem to be able to go beyond 85% correct on strikes\balls. Regardless of what you want, that seems to be about tops. Holding umpires accountable for what they cannot actually do better is worthless.

Either get rid of umpires or stop *****ing about umpires. The constant whining when a call doesn't go the way a fan wants it to go is perhaps the most obnoxious thing that happens in these threads. You don't ***** when a clear strike is called a ball(indeed it's more a celebration) and it benefits the Cubs, but you do when it doesn't benefit the cub without any regard for the past. That is less moral outrage and more unadulterated homerism. Your guy didn't get the call you wanted, so the umpire is defacto unskilled at his job.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but since you quoted me, I'm going to assume it was.

I hardly need to grow up. I understand that umpires are human and will make mistakes. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be under some sort of assessment system that holds them accountable and reports to them the pitches they missed after every game.

They want to get the calls right. Making them more aware of the areas of the strike zone that they are getting wrong can only help them. And those that can't adjust should be sent packing until they can.

There needs to be a higher level of reliability for the consistency of ball/strike calls, IMO. I realize it's not easy to do, but striving for that shouldn't be a pipe dream or something that I get lambasted by you for desiring. The technology exists to help make the calls better....I don't understand the animosity for wanting it implemented.

There needs to be a lot of things done by the umpires, but I don't see balls/strikes as a big deal in the long run it all evens out IMO. We didnt get the Broxton calls, but Russell also had two outside the zone called for strikes and one was much further off the plate than either of the Broxton pitches.

If umps need to do anything its enforce the amount of time between pitches.
