How far these two teams have fallen. It was just a few years ago the Cubs and D Backs were playing in the NLDS. Now they are playing in a meaningless series in early July.

Ian Kennedy: Kennedy will be pitching on a ton of extra rest. The young right-hander last started on June 26 against Tampa Bay. Kennedy, who hasn't had many speed bumps this season, walked a career-high nine and used his extra time in between starts to iron out his

Carlos Silva vs. Barry Enright

Carlos Silva:Silva notched his 12th quality start in his last outing vs. the Reds with a season-high 7 2/3 innings. He hasn't won since May 29 because of a lack of runs. Silva has a 2.90 ERA in nine starts at Wrigley.

Barry Enright: Enright will make his second career start and, if it's a good one, will be the D-backs's No. 5 starter for the foreseeable future. On June 30 in St. Louis, the right-hander allowed one run in five innings.

Ryan Dempster vs. Edwin Jackson

Ryan Dempster: Technically, Dempster had a quality start in his last outing, but it was ugly. He was charged with five runs, but only two were earned vs. the Reds. He struck out nine, matching a season high.

Edwin Jackson: Friday against the Dodgers, Jackson didn't have the best follow-up to his June 25 no-hitter, but he still ended up with the win. In five innings against Los Angeles, he allowed four earned runs. He said afterward that he was battling his mechanics on the mound.

Howry

Bob Howry is one relieved reliever.
The veteran right-hander began the 2010 season with the Cubs' current opponent, the D-backs, but struggled so much (10.67 ERA in 14 outings) that Arizona swallowed his $2 million contract 42 days in. In 17 appearances since rejoining the Cubs on May 21, Howry has compiled a 1.31 ERA.

"It's nice to know you're not that bad," Howry said of his comeback. "I made some mechanical changes that helped me be more consistent with my delivery and make better pitches -- doing some drills to make sure I was staying on top [of the ball]."

How much did his familiarity with Chicago -- he pitched there from 2006-08 before a stop in San Francisco in 2009 -- help his escape from his career nadir?

"It definitely doesn't hurt," Howry hedged. What the tall pitcher was willing to say: Partnering again with pitching coach Larry Rothschild has certainly played a part.

"He was able to tell [what I was doing wrong] when we [the D-backs] came into town [Chicago] at the end of April. ... I pitched while we were there, and he picked up on it right away. I came back [to the Cubs] and he said, 'Yeah, I saw you that day; this is what you were doing,'" Howry remembered. "It was the same thing talking to [Arizona pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr.], the same issues; we just weren't able to correct it."

Howry's manager with the D-backs, A.J. Hinch -- who was dismissed last week -- often said, "Success breeds confidence." Now, all of Howry's is back.

"I realize I'm not the same power pitcher that I was for my first eight years or whatever," the 13-year veteran said. "I have had to make some adjustments and learn how to throw my offspeed [pitches] for strikes. It's just nice to know that even if you're not the pitcher you used to be, you're still better than the numbers I put up here, that I can still get big league hitters out."

Berg

The same day he was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, right-handed reliever Justin Berg struck out D-backs sluggers Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds over the seventh and eighth innings to protect the Cubs' then three-run lead.

So on Tuesday, the newest Cub was sporting an ear-to-ear smile.

"It's good to get the first one out of the way," he said, pausing, "again."

Again for Berg, who was acquired in exchange for outfielder Matt Lawton in 2005, because this is his third stint in the Major Leagues. He was with Chicago on Opening Day but allowed 10 earned runs in his 16 innings before he was optioned on May 21.

Berg said Iowa pitching coach Mike Mason has worked with him on getting ahead in the count and keeping his pitches in the strike zone's lower half. Success in those two areas should mean a long-term stay in Chicago.

"Every time you come up, you want to stick," said Berg, who went 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 14 appearances at Triple-A. "Unfortunately, it doesn't happen. I've just got to keep working hard and everything will work out."

I feel confident that he's leaving Cleveland. He wants to go down as one of the best of all time and he can't do that until he wins. I think he knows a team with Mo Willams and Antawn Jamison can't compete with the Lakers and the Heat. If he wants to win I think his best bet is Chicago honestly.
